Only just discovered this site recently, the seem to specialise in different flavours of post-rock amongst other things.
A couple of questions:
Does anyone know how harsh/kind their scores are when reviewing albums? (I like the use of the "point 5" scores at least).
It's hard to know which albums to look into further, I was looking back at the albums of 2007 list and couldn't really decide where to start, so any ideas how I can make this easier? Or recommend me some albums.
So far I've decided to purchase:
*World's End Girlfriend - Hurt Break Wonderland
*upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start - Embers (when it comes out)
Any information about The Silent Ballet would be appreciated.
Thanks

c'mon, I know there are people here who use this site.
oh
i see it as a fansite really. its more enthusiastic than critical. really like the site. if they rave about something (and yr into the music they cover) its invariably awesome.
(ps-you've made a good choice with WEG..get Yosushi Yoshida's album too)
Get the....

ok, thanks
the silent ballet are pretty good in general
anything they give over 8 is really worth checking out.
they're normally pretty spot on with the stuff they review.
if youd like some recommendations,
then from 2008 i suggest, the new Balmorhea, the Bersarin Quartett s/t and the gifts from enola split album with you may die in the desert.
theyre all amazing.
cheers for the recommendations
I've only read their ASIWYFA review and downloaded a couple of compilations
but it seems pretty good, I think I'll check it out later
I'm on the staff
of The Silent Ballet, so I hope it proves useful to you!
It's definitely a fan/specialist site covering, as you've undoubtedly guessed, post-rock, electronica, neo-classical etc. If you're into that sort of thing then it's an absolutely worthwhile resource as there doesn't seem to be anywhere else that gives that sort of music the same kind of in-depth coverage.
I find out about a lot of stuff from other people's reviews on there, and generally for the higher scores most of the staff tends to agree, though we try to keep it open in a DiS style so that those who disagree can share their views too.
In terms of review harshness, everyone has their own standards but it's fairly rare for something to get an 8 or above, and if it does then it's worth checking out.
