If any of the other performers at glasto, let's say...oh..The Cribs, did that; they'd be nailed to the mast and left out to dry.
And let's say Dickie Ashcroft released an album of tales about he was a big tough gangster, selling drugs and running teams of prostitutes in Wigan.
And let's say....
well
actually...
The Cribs wouldn't say that, would they, cos they have principles and they are good people.
And Ashcroft just would not get away with such glamorous and exciting stories
partly because it is bullshit and even he might draw the line at such TOSS.
He is just a rich, cossetted old pop star after all. And partly because such tales would make him look fucking stupid.
(Insert joke here).
Now I wont deny tha Jigga puts together a great beat and can work the crowd and rock the house with the best of them.
And is not entirely without wit.
But, it seems to me that his lyrics and pretty much his whole persona is ridiculous, insulting, nasty, juvenile and bullshit.
That man is 40 not 14.
And because he is black and a rapper, he is allowed to run off at the mouth unchecked and unchallenged.
A double standard that I don't understand.
I really don't care.
.
Zzzzzzzzz
try and incorporate getting laid into your life.
yeah tom, nice comeback
word to your mother

What a cunt.
Hahahaha
pretty much my favourite ever post on here!
^
actuaLOL
he get's away with it
cos as that uber-feminist,ahem, Lennon said "women are the jiggas of the world". Or something. Basically, dress it up and reinterpret and offer the usual suspects as exceptions to the rule, women as bitches, hos, freeks whatever is acceptable in music (even when it's women themselves presenting themselves as little more than doll parts). Riot grrrl mentality? Not no more.
I don't understand
women ARE bitches and ho's
fo' real
what was he like at glasto?
did he get sir paul on for a 23minute hey jude singalong?
He started with 'Wonderwall'
serious.
It was shit.
I don' t quitte get it either.
I think it's a little sad that he can get ten thousand people to shout "99 problems and a bitch aint one".
and yes there are two 't's in quitte.
HOV not ho
Fucking gimp.
Erm, the whole point of Hip-Hop seems to have...
completely passed you by.
Gangsters, selling drugs and acting tough is, whether you like it or not, part of (though admittedly, not always) hip-hop music.
If you don't like his double-standards, then don't listen to him... I'm pretty sure Jay-Z wouldn't care either way.
Why are you using Cribs as an example by the way?
Plus, music is full of personas and always has been. People either buy into it or don't. Without, in anyway, meaning to compare the two (which would just be ridiculous) I'm sure a lot of people didn't get the whole Ziggy Stardust persona. Most rock stars, musicians and artists have personas because they are performers.
I'm done.
Done what? Done looking stupid?
'Erm, the whole point of Hip-Hop seems to have...completely passed you by.'
Just because the point of hip-hop is to aggresive and sexist, doesn't mean that it's right or should be tolerated, especially in the mainstream way that it is.
.
'Just because the point of hip-hop is to aggresive and sexist, doesn't mean that it's right or should be tolerated, especially in the mainstream way that it is.'
It's not though. Someones been on the G-Unit a bit much.
I like how you've quoted selectively...
If you read on, you'd see I also wrote "whether you like it or not, (its) part of (though admittedly, not always) hip-hop music".
I remember first listening to Eminem's "Marshall Mathers" album as a eleven year old and hearing all that stuff he was saying about what he'd do to his wife etc.
But the point is, is that you don't take it literally.
It's a show, it's a performance, it's an act. People, like yourself, can't seem to grasp the idea that the majority don't take the lyric substance seriously. The real problem is a certain minority do and they're the ones that seem to scare away people like yourself, but as I said, they're a minority who can't distinguish the facade from the reality. They shouldn't ruin it for everyone.
Yeah
stop spoiling my homophobic, mysogonistic fun. Bloody minority!
Again,
didn't read the "take it literally" bit properly.
I couldn't give a shit about
whether an artist is sexist/racist/homophobic as I don't think they are responsible for their audience and I'm cool with people writing about what they want too. But if you do care about such things the whole 'it's an act!' defence holds fuck all water.
I still disagree
with your point thhat guns, drugs, generally being a gangster etc is a part of hip hop, but TOTALLY agree with your 'don't take it literally, its a show' coomments (see below)... like I say, I doubt these hip hop complainers go about ranting and raving when they see sexism/violence/insert anitsocial behaivour here in a movie.
A wonderful point is made below.
Movies, by their very nature are meant to be fantasy.
Rappers on the other hand are supposed to be keeping it 'real', this being the operative word. For them, their whole persona is that they walk it like they talk it; that they're speaking from experience.
If a rapper wrote songs about dealing drugs and being in gangs and spending time in jail and it all turned out to be a lie he'd be ridiculed. This certainly isn't the case with films.
hmmmmm
I'm not so sure... maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't. I doubt Jay-Z gets up to half the stuff in his songs. Or even any of it. Jeff Mangum wasn't even alive when Anne Frank was, but he still sings about her... noone mocks him. i could probably think of a million examples of artists portraying events that they've never experienced in music, hip hop is no exception. I know for a fact Chuck D neevr went to jail and broke out, killing a large number of prison gaurds as he portrays on 'black steel...' and he is one of the most revered MCs in history.
And films are NOT fantasy by nature, that is just ridiculous... many films portray or represent ACTUAL events and ideaologies.
these threads piss me off so much
the whole point of hip hop is not anything to do drugs, being tough etcetc, it just HAPPENS to be the most common subject matter... and even that is debatable, when you look into the world of less well known hip hop. Loads of singers sing about controversial stuff, hip hop just seems to be the most complained about. ARGH, this kind of stuff pisses me off. I doubt you complain when you see a violent movie... but yet its still okay to complain when you hear Jay-Z singing about this kind of stuff?
the difference is
between PORTRAYING something and ADVOCATING it. This type of hip-hop advocates and glamorises misogynistic attitudes, it doesn't just portray them. And it's not acceptable just because it's got a good beat or because Jay-Z is a good rapper or whatever. It's still hateful garbage.
meh
I don't listen to Jay-Z anyway... I'm just a hip hop fan who gets angry when one of his fave genres is mindlessly slagged off by people who obviously hardly ever listen to it. I'm going to try avoid these threads in the future... just stress.
well, that
and
the point of hip hop really is NOT aggressive and sexist
not sure either of those were one of the 4 elements, actually
I see young fizzy b is confusing hip hop with gangsta rap
easily done
tis a bit like assuming all films star jet li
no crime to be young and ignorant I suppose
shame to stay that way tho
I used the Cribs as an example cos they are one of the few bands out there that
a. walk it like they talk it
b. have principles in this area and do view misogyny not with an unsexy studenty politicky glare but with contempt and a lickle pity
but
in truth it is not just the misogyny that makes Jay Z a big fat joke
it is everything about him; he really is a colossal cock
and now it is everything about him + however many white niggas from the projects who were feeling a little bit of his blackness last night in Somerset
wow
what a fucking idiot
...
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/457/burnfw2.jpg
BURN
Walk it like they talk it?
They talk about their love for Sonic Youth, Huggy Bear and K Records and then make lame, piss-weak indie whilst dressing like tramps.
I don't even know where to begin with your "colossal cock" comment.
Hip-Hop or Gangster Rap...
who cares. I'm talking specifically about the CONTENT of the lyrics, not genre. You even spoke of themes and content yourself in the opening text of your thread, as in: "... a big tough gangster, selling drugs and running teams of prostitutes in Wigan."
Now you've decided to change tact and focus on genre... make up your mind.
As for your Cribs point... are you fuckin' serious? As somehow they should be applauded 'cuz they "walk it like they talk it", 'cuz they actively hate homophobia, hate racism and hate misogyny... Just like every other sane minded person on the planet!!! What a stupid point to make, seriously, I don't need to go on.
By calling me "young Fizzy B", I see your aiming to be patronising, but it's obvious you're the one who's naive.
So is it not
more admirable to actively put accross an image that is opposed to homophobia, racism, sexism... than to put one accross that isn't and actually furthers it? what are you saying here? If i hit you with a sign that said "i'm only joking/this is art" is that worse or better than not hitting you at all?
It's not the fact that it's "more admirable"...
it just IS. To be actively against homophobia, racism and sexism is just the normal, right-thinking attitude to be expected of every decent human being that walks the planet.
You're point about the sign, besides being obsurd, didn't take into consideration my previous points that A) the majority of the lyrical content of hip-hop / gangster rap or whatever the hell you wanna call it is simply a show and B) the majority of decent human beings / fans of it understand this and only a small narrow-minded minority actually define themselves by it.
You have a choice to either listen or not listen. Then you have a choice to define yourself by what rappers say or you don't. I chose to listen and not to define myself by what rappers say. What's so difficult for you to understand about this?
If something is
morally wrong it doesn't matter if it's a show or not, some people will be offended, other people will take it seriously. I do understand what you're saying even if it is coated in a thick veneer of condescension, I just happen to think that you're wrong. Obviously the sign analogy was daft but thats because this whole thread is silly. If you are prepared to accept that sexism etc. is morally wrong (which i'm sure you do) then I dont see how anyone can stick up for it on the basis of it being an act.
No it isn't.
Four key elements of hip hop: MC'ing, B-boying, Graffiting and DJ'ing.
Nowhere does it mention anything you have used above.
Jay - Z calls women bitches and hos
And he told me your mam's a slag and that your dad touches boys.
That's 2 out of yer 99 problems right there.
and finally
on thewhole, yr violent movie is quite blatantly overtly sensationalised and fictional
ie clearly distanced from reality
whereas yr gangsta rap, is seen as rather lame if it is not at least 99% real, with genuine bulletholes and a good few years in the slammer for the popular summer sport of dealing and busting caps in one anothers' asses
ie based on real events
violent movies
mostly based on real life happenings, or at least finding some root in reality. fact.
Assuming your post isn't a joke,
I did say was "part of". I never mentioned "four key elements".
You know as well as everyone else does that the things I listed are part of, but by no means define, hip-hop music.
What what why why???
be more specific with your feedback...
Its nowt new Rappers talkin about this stuff they have been for years and years...
He doesnt do it very offensivly does he, its more like an act when he is doin it.
Its fair enough to be offended by that kinda laguage though...
ha
you lovely bitches-and-hos know i'm tryin to correct this
Hi,
isn't it weird how this keeps coming up?
yes
and annoying. I might stop posting in these threads... they are the spot on the arse of DiS foruming.
this thread is full of LOL.
"the four elements" etc etc HAHAHAHA
The fact that bad rap music is popular is symptomatic of the way music is consumed by the general public, in britain at least.
People that say "oh but rap music is supposed to be about sexism and killing people! That's what's REAL to him! You just don't get it!": that's pretty racist and partly the reason why such acts get away with it. Such music and culture has been fetishised by the media to an extent where it's justifyable to say calling women "bitches" is ok because "it's not our culture, it's how black guy's in da ghetto live so don't worry yr trilby and just enjoy it whilst we bring you sexism in HD, because remember, that's just how black people are!". There's a level of abstraction that is pretty irresponsible.
To people who are outraged at all the sexism: there is a fine line between performance and mysogny. I feel Jay-z balances it well and is a pretty good MC. He's still playing to the crowds who want all that stuff, as explained above. 50 cent misses the mark and is coincidentally also a terrible MC. His music is pretty hateful and really not good.
I don't really see the problem
He's not calling ALL WOMEN 'bitches' is he, talking about specific women who cause you problems - this is not a specificly 'rap' or 'black' thing, and if it was Nick Cave or, as you say, The Cribs or whoever singing "God I hate it when women are bitches and cause me problems" there wouldn't be such uproar.
And the whole thing about people having a problem with people singing about drug dealing and being in jail, well, if that's their personal experience what's it got to do with you? Rappers like Jay Z especially rap about how music is the way they escaped drug dealing, they're not glamorising it are they?
And if you're reffering to Glasto last night when you say he keeps talking about 'hos', he's actually saying HOV, so it's not even an issue.
Here's the problem badman
They are glamorizing it. Inner-city black kids have 3 role models: basketball players, rappers, and drug dealers. Consequently there're more blacks in prison than in school. 25% of black men will be involved in a violent crime. So yeah that's a problem.
Right now it's politically correct to give rappers a pass on misogyny etc and really I could give a fuck...but it's not done in a clever or appealing way to my ears. Well, except for the english dude who was in blur *ahem* ...and I'm sure there might be other great hip hop artists, but I'm unwilling to sift to 99.9% crap to find those one or two interting artists.
Personally, I think they've done black culture a big disservice when they've done such amazing things (blues, jazz, r'nb/motown etc) for music in the past.
I thought it was a passing fad...meh. OK, it's here to stay, fine. It's time hip hop stepped it up and moved beyond bitches and ho's. There's no more shock value there...we get it. I think they're starting to do this... but I dunno, we'll see.
So basically...
you just don't like hip-hop?
I like this thread
for no other reason than the title's inherent suggestion that Jay-Z uses such language at all times. "Bitch, did I leave the hob ring on?"
Exactly
It's like MPs trying to talk about videogames.
If you want somewhere to start a debate try this from the Blueprint 2:

Sisters love Jay cuz they know how 'Hov is
I love my sisters, I don't love no bitch
Oi vey
this is your defence?
"If you want somewhere to start a debate"
Doesn't sound like I was defending anyone. I was just pointing out that a lot of the posters on here didn't seem aware of any Jay-Z songs except for the chorus from 99 Problems.
mps talking about video games
great analogy!!
It's a valid point of course.
And a big part of the problem is that, whilst I can see the arguments that it is a stage act and a performance and it shouldn't necessarily be assumed all hip-hop MC's lives are reflective of their lyrics, a big part of the "act" is authenticity and trying to come across as "real" as possible, which does weaken the showmanship defence and, show or otherwise, you can't deny the deliberately blurred line does mean that people listening to it might feel it condones sexism, misogyny etc.
What pisses me off, although there's not been too much of it in this thread, is this quite unpleasant cutlural relavatist attitude that pretty much comes down to "you have to make allowances 'cos they're black people from deprived conditions" which is an unpleasantly classist and racist argument that somehow suggests neither black people or poor people can be expected to be as "moral" or as "good people" as middle-class white people. I find that an incredibly offensive argument in many ways.
maybe
he only knows bitches and hos?
not compeltely out of the question...
this
in a roundabout way is my point mt nousername
In other main stage shocker
Neil Diamond thrusts Christianity upon unsuspecting audience.
Yeah
but he's Jay-Z. And also lol at this ^^
How does he get away with such filth?
I'm outraged.

KIDDING!!!
Hey, Lennon said "Woman IsThe NIGGER of the World" , Nigger, Nigger, Nigger- say it. It's a word. Back in the day when some of the adults around me used that word to refer to African-Americans (another fucked up reference if you ask me) I knew it was bad- I never used it except in the "nursery rhyme" eenie, meenie, mynie, mo, catch a nigger by the toe. I still don't use that term- but I know some folks that do and that's really fucked up. Those folks are black folks. I said racism is a double edged sword and it is- it hurts the the racist as well as those they are being racist towards and in this cuntry (America) racisim is a two-way street as well. Racism is rampant and it is (by no means) just white people hating non-whites- far from it. The biggest racists in this land are blacks and it's really starting to get old. Niggahs be laughing at the situation too. I hope after Obama is elected that we can finally get to the core of "racism in america". It's so nauseating- there are actually black people in america that claim Obama isn't "black" enough; they say he has no "slave blood" but ftw thank god his wife does- and radio talk show host rush limbaugh accuses Obama of playing the race card and then plays a "satire" song entitled "Barak The Magic Negro" (sung to "puff the magic dragon") almost in the same sentence- I am horrified when I think about this shit. Why can't we all just get along or why can't we just be honest about it? This goddamn country needs to wake up and quit being stupid. Racism is out there and it's not going to go away by avoiding it. I'm voting for Obama cause he's not republican and that's idiotic too but I don't care we need someone who ISN"T an asshole in the white house (which includes probably ninety percent of everone who has ever held the office). I supported him in the primary cause Hilary just ain't my kind o ho. I have long wanted a woman prez. and it broke my heart that Hilary Clinton was all that was available- maybe next time. I hope that Obama can do something about the races and their hatred for eachother.
