I was just listening to 'Source Tags and Codes' by Trail of Dead, and the piano on the intro song 'Invocation' really is a beautiful way to open an album.

What are some of your favourite opening songs on albums you love?

Microcastle

I love the way that opens. It builds you up for a huge climax before the album has even begun setting it up perfectly for Agoraphobia.

The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour

'The Classical' is one of my favourite opening tracks and the first that came to mind here.

The way the Mark E Smith's snarl rises from behind the pounding drums is sublime.
Plus there's the infamous rumour 'Where are the obligatory niggers?....' cost them a Motown deal.

angel of death

first song on raining blood

oooor bring da ruckus on 36 chambers

"FUCKING CROISSANT!!"

is this what jamie t says at the start of his album?

also, BONE MACHINE

bone machine. bone machine

check it out

on guerilla by SFA

'Dalliance' The Wedding Present

- the first track on 'Seamonsters'.

'Start Again' Teenage Fanclub - first track on 'Songs From Northern Britain'.

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

"Bonefish", some crazy sounding electro-gargle, "Bonefish"... "A Peeeeacebone gotta fooouund in a dinosaauuuur wiiiiing!"

Brilliant

LOVE

I still think Strawberry jam is their best album.

I think imay have to agree with you

But only just their best, massive massive love for Sung Tongs.

Teen Drama - Times New Viking

And MBV Only Shallow of course

Liquid Swords

Obvious thing for me to post, given that I nicked the title for my username, but the sample from Shogun Assassin really sets the mood.

Mono

The Flames Beyond The Cold Mountain.
Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma
Converge - Concubine

The Classical

Also maybe the best song ever as well.
