airports

What is your favourite airport? Which do you hate the most? What do you like/dislike about airports in general?

My favourite is the one right here in Oslo because it's big but not massive, and it's really well laid out so you don't get lost, and it looks quite nice. And there's loads of shops and cafés and the duty free shop is amazing.

My second favourite is Schipol (Amsterdam), because they have a pink casino and the automatic voices sound really funny and they have weird smoking rules.

The worst ones IN THE WORLD are Charles de Gaulle in Paris (only been once but I'm pretty sure I kept getting lost and couldn't find anything and there wasn't even a proper tax free shop) and of course, Stansted. Although as horrible as Stansted is I'm kind of fond of it, I've spent so much time there, even slept there once.

  • Copenhagen

    airport is pretty swanky.

    I'm going to Heathrow, NOW.

    • oh i don't remember much from that one

but they did offer me lots of cash to stay in a hotel overnight and catch the next flight the day after because they were overbooked. but i couldn't, because i was going somewhere else the next morning.

  • I've only been to five or so airports

My favourite is Dubai International as it's massive but easy to navigate through AND there's countless duty-free shops.

The worst one I've been to is Nairobi. I can't remember much about it though.

    • african airports

seem to all be a bit of a mess. I've been to the ones in Johannesburg and Gaborone a long time ago and everything was really disorganised and confusing. I've been to the aiport in Cairo a good few times and it's not brilliant but I love it nonetheless <3

  • best = O'Hare in Chicago

THERE WAS A DINOSAUR IN THE DEPARTURE LOUNGE

    worst = Luton
    because it's in Luton

    • although JFK comes close

purely for the huge slices of pizza you can buy airside.

  • best east midlands

    worst turin or heathrow

  • I love airports.

That's a bit sad, cometo think of it...but anyway.

All the London ones are shite, except Heathrow terminal 3 (I think I mean 3) because it has Giraffe so you can eat pancakes before your flight.

Lima airport is probably the coolest I've been to, 1) because it's in Lima, 2) because it's clean and spacious and has fun shops.

    • wait no

The best one ever was some "airport" in the middle of the jungle which had a shack and no passport control and a little cubicle where they made you get yellow fever jabs if you try to sneak past without one...fun stuff.

    • airports are brilliant

they're like tiny, fake little worlds.

      • They remind me of towns

        • They remind me of Milton Keynes

      • i love them

they're all essentially the same, only some are shit and some are not. yeah.

        • basically

          kinda like service stations.

          • and train stations

god, fucking train stations are really ALL the same. i prefer airports by far. i'm such an idiot i look down on the people who are obviously not used to how the airport works.

            • Train Stations are ok

              Bit boring though!

  • best = none. i dislike airports

worst = either a) New Orleans. thanks, you grotty shithole. all i needed when i'm stranded overnight is nowhere to lie down (all the seats have fucking metal arm rests) and for you to play tinny jazz music ALL FUCKING NIGHT

or b) Chicago O'Hare, because they're disorganised arseholes who left me waiting there for about fourteen hours after letting my flight back to Heathrow leave without me. grrrr.

  • Best = Schipol

Worst = Hong Kong, as it's the biggest roofed space in the world and you don't realise how long it's gonna take you to get across

    • the airport's subway system...

..should have tipped you off, no?

  • montreal <3

  • Glasgow Prestwick

because it's 'pure dead brilliant' and has a Peckhams. I agree about CDG :@ i got searched there and shouted at in French for something i didn't understand. Also, my sister got given the wrong directions by the airport staff and missed her connecting flight and then lost her luggage.

    • i don't think glasgow is that bad

      it's so tiny too!

      • oops

i meant to say it is my favourite. Having a Peckhams is such a good thing and i think its the only airport in the world to have one, also its the only UK airport Elvis went to or something.

        • oh right!

i don't know why i assumed you didn't like it. i think someone else was saying they didn't the other day. it only has like 5 gates or something, right? and a billion souvenir shops! so many tacky souvenirs in so little space! i've been hungover most of the time when i've been there so i don't remember a lot about it.

  • I hate Heathrow so much

It's claustrophobic and 70s and shit.

Stanstead is alright, it's airy and what I'd expect from an airport. The immigration bit when returning is shite though. DO NOT WANT.

    • only been to heathrow twice

and one of those was 10 years ago. i try to avoid it because of stuff i hear about it though.

      • there's nothing wrong with it

        i quite like it, actually.

JFK is cool. there's a baggage handler who works for BA that looks like richard pryor.

        • but

don't loads of people lose their luggage and end up waiting for hours for delayed flights?

when we were flying to south africa from heathrow out flight was cancelled because there was a mouse on board the plane! but we got to stay in a hotel so it was ok.

          • to be honest

yes, that does seem to happen, but 95 per cent of lost baggage finds its way to the owner on the same day or next, so it's not that bad.

re: delayed flights, that happens at every airport, but if you're going to the world's busiest airport, there will be a higher chance of that happening i guess.

  • beirut airport

is cool. it has one runway, which is dangerously close to the sea and everyone in the airport is very mean looking and there are lots of army people until you cross the passport control and then it's all smiles and baklava.

    • Agreed

I got pulled into an office at Beirut by overzealous officials last November, as soon as I mentioned I was there to do some reporting.

Once I was cleared, they were pretty cheery.

      • oh wow

sounds like you have a pretty cool job.

        • It's not bad

          I'm very lucky.

  • also Vancouver kinda wins

for having an 'english' pub called The Elephant & Castle that sells strongbow and shows ice hockey.

    • you and your american airports

i don't know anything about any of them :(

      • geography fail.

        ({)

        • Canada is in North America, no?

  • Helsinki Airport

was sweet, they had an old prop-plane hanging from the ceiling and the Finnish-english accent is almost idnetical to American. It's also quite small, I liked it.

Dubai Airport is absolutely massive, they have supercars you can win in a raffle! It also has some of the best duty free on earth.

Worst Airport? Humberside, it's like some forgotten airstrip and KLM seem to be the only airline that use it.

  • Singapore Airport

is amazing. It's covered in really cheesey floral carpets and gold fixtures and has free internet everywhere and incredible air-conditioning (stepping outside of the terminal is like walking right into a really clammy sauna, so air-con <3)

    And free massage machines.

    • one of my friends got her bag searched at customs at singapore airport

coz she had TOO MANY packets of chewing gum with her, i think she had a multipack and they took two packets away from her and let her go on her way

      singapore is cool

  • Best: Madrid Terminal 4

because it was designed by Richard Rogers and is just a remarkably beautiful space to be in and generally feels like something out of the future: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Barajas_interior6.jpg

Worst: Luton because it's in Luton and there's always fucking roadworks on the M1 and all around the airport so it takes an age to get there despite only being 40 odd miles away.

  • the one in dublin is a bit shit

    no?

    • Is it?

They're doing it all up though. I think. There's loads of barriers up when I went past it the other week

      • well, i don't like it

        not that well organised

but i'd forgotten they're working on it, it might turn out nice, who knows

  • You aren't talking about Torp, are you?

Because there is an absolute lack of shops and cafes there. And it is tiny.

There is nothing to do there...I tried to get on the internet there but it didn't work on any of the computers, so I ended up blowing all my spare crown on presents for my family, which, at Norwegian prices and in an airport is not a good idea.

  • best - munich,

out of all of the ones i have been to, terminal 2 is the best.

worst - stansted, but maybe i'm biased.

    • If you think Stansted is the worst, you haven't been to Gatwick.

Best: Luton. Cos it's about 20 miles away.

      • is gatwick really that bad?

        • In my experience, yes.

But this was over eight years ago and at Christmas, which probably isn't representative of things on a whole.

  • favourites are probably

singapore and fiji. Fiji because they had a band playing as we stepped out the plane which was kinda cool and they didnt seem to care much for security and singapore was alright for spending ages in because you ad internet n stuff.

  • Heathrow terminal 2

for the ammount of footballers ive "met" there. I stood next to dider drogba in the carpark, and got crespo to sign my ticket the year before. when i asked if he thought they were going to win the champions league, he replied "liverpool are looking good". he was right.

    • worst

is probably john lennon in liverpool. I had to catch a 05:30 flight to spain once, and there were about 15 people drinking heavily. also id had no sleep. one of the worst places ive ever been to.

      • x

Doha is the best airport in the world when I am departing from it, and the worst when I arrive back at it.

        But anyway, glib sarcasm aside:

Best - Dubai airport is pretty good, although it is only my 'favourite so far because I haven't really been to any other really great airports. Schipol was a bit soulless when I went through there once.

Worst - Amman, Jordan. Truly appalling. The lighting levels are so low and the building in such a creaky state that it reminded of a subway in Newport. Yes, that bad.

        • I hate the luton airport ... so rushed!

The Amsterdam airport is very pleasent and clean

          • Oh, hang on!

Newcastle has to be a winner - it has a GREGGS in it! None of this 'caviar and champagne' nonsense.

  • Kuala Lumpur's one is really nice, light and spacious

Heathrow is rather shit and has become more so in recent years.

    Delhi was nice.

I generally like airports even if I'm not traveling myself. I look at the planes.

  • they're all a bit shit though really aren't they?

But here's my thoughts on airports off the top of my head.

Cardiff - closest to home so the easiest to get to and back from.

Koh Samui, Thailand - picturesque, it looks like some kind of Playmobil Jungle Airport playset.

Heathrow - the only place i've ever drank Starbucks, and the breakfast was ridiculously expensive (and not particularly nice).

Gatwick - flight got in about 4 hours before my train back to cardiff and before anything seemed to be open. Tried to sleep on some uncomfortable chair but kept getting woken up by cleaners.

Crete - the runway's right by the edge of the water, which is a little scary when you think you're just descending into the sea.

Bangkok - the descent makes you realise how fucking massive Bangkok is.

Newfoundland, Canada - refuelled on the way to Florida. There was snow! For some reason we ate ice cream.

    • never been to cardiff airport

there are no cheap flights anywhere, right? how big is it?

  • Syros

As it was pretty much a bus stop.

  • big love for schiphol

THAT'S how to be both big and awesome.

Newcastle Airport is actually really good too.

Worst airports: Turin, Marseilles (although the descent is AMAZING), Durham Teesside (literally a shack in the middle of nowhere, really bleak).

I like airports because of the excitement and sense of infinite possibility associated with them.

  • not teh prettiest

but best airport ever is singapore changi

havent been there for a few years, but have passed through half a dozen times. very fast access into teh city, free internet, free phone chargers, a special area with mini cinema, properly relazing seats, swimming pool, everything. and it's well laid out. and getting through immigration / baggage is very fast. love that airport - it just WORKS.

  • Gatwick

it's the only one I'ver ever been too, but I actually love it.

    Everything's absolutely massive.

And Rhodes Diagoras airport is like, utter shit.

    • *to

      and it clearly isn't

      worst post ever
