I'm seriously thinking of hopping in the car and bombing it to Aberdeen quite soon.
I'm in London so the journey would be 9 hours plus...also my car is a 10 year old Nissan Micra...
Dear people of DiS, have you ever undertaken such a long journey in a slightly shit car? And what was the outcome? My apprehension needs soothing...
Nottingham to Edinburgh
My car wasn't shit though. I had a stiff back by the time we arrived but in general it was tolerable.
Take plenty of music though! If there's someone going with you and they're promising to stay awake - THEY'RE LYING!
i've done that before
In a car with no handbrake, twas an intersting experience :P It's quite a nice drive as i remember it...
I passed my test a few months ago
so I've only been as far as Bedford on my own. The car I'm driving is very old though and only used for short journeys. It could probably reach Milton Keynes and back but that's it.
Everyone I've spoken to
is all like "ohhhhhhhhhhhh, it's just a Micra, and an old one at that"
But you get folk who cross Europe in banger rallies (no smut pls). So surely my journey wouldn't be that risky...would it?
<STRESS>
Birmingham to Perth
In a Ford Ka.
Birmingham to Edinburgh in an elderly Mondeo.
OK no probs, just check your water oil and air, take a bottle of water for drinking and music to listen to. Take a break or two to stretch your legs.
From Antrim To Kerry in a day in a scenic.
Jo'burg to Cape Town
well I was in the car, Mr Starshaped drove.
I don't drive but I've done some wonderful passenger journeys.
Lincoln to Lancaster across the dales was phenomenal, Lancaster to Gravesend via Cambridge for a Tuesday night footie game less so.
about 40 miles
or something lame like that. I've been away at uni most of the time, and when I'm home I don't have my own car and my mum almost always needs hers.
Vancouver to Toronto
This was in a 1999 Dodge RAM pick-up
A Dodge Ram > 1998 Nissan Micra
though!
Canadian road trip! Nice!
I drove from Toronto to Montreal and back, via Niagra (the wrong way!) and Ottawa. That was most excellent.
I've only been through the rockies on a greyhound, which was more terrifying than fun.
i went on a roadtrip with my friends from London to Edinburgh/Glasgow/Sterling.
mission. but it was fun though, stopping off in places and looking for pound shops.
The car was okay, a few years old. A ford something or other. I wasn't the one driving you see and i know very little about cars.
It would just be me
and an iPod
I just really want to do it but the army of naysayers is making me think I will doubtless bite off more than I can chew and end up crying over a burnt out Micra somewhere on the M6..........
take
me and jamie, we'll make the journey soooo much more enjoyable.
You'll be fine
I've driven to Bournemouth and back in a day from Manchester (about a 10 hour round trip), though admittedly there was a few hours break in the middle of that to play music to an entirely inattentive crowd who'd been distracted by a group of pole dancers who went on just before us. Just check your tires and oil, make sure you've plenty of snacks and music and take a few services breaks (for you and your car!)
Where was this?
Did you play a show at Spearmint Rhino or something!?
It was Sixty Million Postcards actually
completely bizarre - no one told us about it, but just before we went on these guys loaded in these portable poles (like those swingball sets with a base you can fill with sand, but bigger) and these girls turned up, pole danced to music for about 10 minutes, and then left. We didn't stand a chance.
Oh Christ!
60 Million Postcards is my favourite bar, I've never seen that though. Sounds like some kind of adult entertainment flashmob!
I really like that bar.
I'd have liked it a lot more on the night I went if there'd have been some semi-naked ladies and some chuff action though. That's all it was missing.
I can agree to meet you there if you like?
"some semi-naked ladies and some chuff action"
amazing.
:D
I do like that idea. I'm not completely that isn't what happened, it was pretty disorganised - but yeah, it's a really lovely bar, one day I'll go back to Bournemouth and actually enjoy myself there rather than just fretting over soundchecks and not being able to find the clutch for my hi-hat.
London
to Berlin. You need a co-pilot, caffeine, haribos and more caffeine.
Reading to the Lake District.
6 pack of Red Bull
fo' sho'
argh
london to Glasgow, made me feel sick and hungover. You can't do it on your own, it's a killer.
can you pick me up in Leeds on your way
and I'll come with you!
Pick a pick up spot then!
http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/inc/planner_places_redirect.jsp?showMap=true
If you go to SHOW MAP you can see why I'm a bit scared..........
route not found
will you be going up the A1(M)?
also, if so you can just pick me up in leeds
surely worth it just for this?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c8/A1scotland.jpg/800px-A1scotland.jpg
Can I really come?! I am a decent map reader and will bring mix cds, tea and sandwiches
CONVINCED
That's about 10 miles away from my final destination...it's a place called Stonehaven I think....
I can feel a DiS road trip coming on
PS My route?
A1, then M6, then M74, then A90 (the glory road home)
PUNISHING
right, pick me up in leeds then!
great :D
there is some amazing bits of the M6 through the Lakes. and we can go to Tebay services :D
I've driven London to Biarritz.
Make sure you pack:
1)Some fizzy sweets - though not sherbert as you'll spill this down you whilst driving and spend the next 10 hours in a gritty sticky mess
2)10 road trip mix CDs that feature at least 2 power ballads per disk
3)A navigator who won't piss you off with their non-stop 'Are we there yets' - preferably someone who'll be up for sex in random laybys at least 3 times during the journey
4) A map and your RAC membership card
^5
to point 3
:)
I can come
I can drive. Maybe. In 6 months.
You could come in 6 days
no driving required...just Red Bull can opening and brow-mopping
Furthest I've personally driven
is Surrey to Nottingham, only about 2.5hrs.
Lame!
^FAIL
One key point.............
Absolutely NO Twat-Nav may be employed.
3.99 AA Road Atlas, nothing more is required!
can i come with?
yes, take lots of music. haribo starmix too. car games are good too, especially "BMW"
I ASKED FIRST!!!
ooh you did
we can both go? DiS road-trip!
OK!
hooray
i will bring marshmellows and The Fall's John Peel boxset
Think carefully about music...
You either have to be completely anal and programme an enormously long playlist into your ipod / CD changer / whatever based on 'by the time I get to Loughborough will I really be in the mood for grindcore? (answer: yes)'.
Or just stick your pod on shuffle.
I drove from Kent to Exeter and it actually took me longer to plan my listening for the trip than it took to drive it.
I always like to listen to my Grindcore when I get to Kelso
or thereabouts :)
What? This isn't Elizabethtown!
Carter USM B-sides all the way and none of your lip!
even their cover of 'panic'?
I've still got Carter singles on vinyl....
Haven't seen Elizabethtown, is it any good?
I can assure you
that both the Carter A-sides and B-sides albums are on the iPod ready for play.
Tru dat
If you like the thought of Kirsten Dunst as........
a sexy indie chick air hostess who does a nice line in Low tee shirts and knitted hats, yes!
Basically, yes even if it is a bit schmaltzy.
:D
"By The Time I Get To Loughborough Will I Really Be In The Mood For Grindcore" sounds like a Jimmy Webb hit from an alternate universe.
I've been part of a shift journey to Barcelona
It took sooo long
Manchester to Belgium
in an F reg VW Golf. Went to a New Years party and then drove back to London the next day, in the snow!
With 4 other people in the car!
italy
i didnt drive. daddy did
Northants to Plymouth
4 1/2 hours. It was okay. Music helps. So does Relentless.
On the way to Amsterdam once
My friend tried to catch a chicken in a Antwerp service station - one of the funniest things I've ever seen. He had a hot dog in one hand and the other was flailing about wildly clucthing at the poor bird
10 year old Micra!
Flash cunt.
I get to drive ny girlfriend's F reg hearing aid beige Micra.
Makes me feel a bit like Hightower.
The furthest I've driven
was about double the length of an average driveway.
I can't drive...
Penzance to Glasgow!!!!!
A couple of times now.
Music is vital....obvs, but also well timed coffee/tea/poo breaks. I mix up my tunes with a bit of informative radio 4 chat or 5live. Also make little targets for yourself like, in 2 hours I'm gonna be in Carlisle or summat.
Dont worry about your Micra... I used to bomb it up from Cornwall in my clapped out YUGO to see my buddies at Swansea uni all the time!
