It was VERY good.

I really like most of the tracks on the album SO good pick.

i liked it

i didnt at first.its a real grower.took me about four listens to appreciate it

I really enjoyed it

I like the vocal interplay. Get Up and Memorize The Lines are probably my favourites.
Listening to this did make me realise that I do know one Sleater Kinney track. It was on a Jo Whiley CD compilation I had when I was 15, maybe the INcredible Sounds Of Jo Whiley, can't remember the name of the track but I remember being a bit addicted to it.

contaversial opinion ahoy!

I loved the album, thought it was really solid but...

I cannot stand 'banned from the end of the world'. In fact this song is the reason why I never became a Sleater Kinney fan in the first place. I had it on an (excellent) Matador 3cd compilation that introdcued me to loads of cool bands (including Modest Mouse) but I hated this song.

Every time someone on here or elsewhere said 'check out SK' I thought 'nah they did that duff song'. I can't put my finger on why I dislike it so much but urrrggghhh, it's horrible and lets down an otherwise excellent album.

maybe

my third fave sleater album after the woods and dig me out.
thing is they were so consistent i find anything they did hard to criticise.

I had never listened to Sleater-Kinney

before this, however I am now getting other albums by them. I really enjoyed this album especialy the dual vocals, they worked so well together 'memorize your lines' is my current favorite track.

seriously get

the woods. its sleater gone led zeppelin. but better.

Ha

amazing description

Ok I'll take your advice

The Woods it is.

I thought it was ok, but didn't really change my opinion of SK.

I liked the bits that reminded me of Electrelane, but it's not really my thing. I may give a another listen, it wasn't offensive.

It was pretty good.

As someone posted earlier, it is a grower, but it's worth putting the time in to really appreciate it.

I thought in places it sounded

really quite similar to Throwing Muses (who are a REAL love of mine). I never see that much love for TM on here - what do you think? Are the 2 bands similar? If so, which do you prefer and why?

I love the Muses

but don't really think SK sounds like them at all..

yay disagreement!

Elaborate. How would you define the essential difference? Which do you prefer?

one band is complex

the other is brutal.

Huh

I'd be tempted to say TM & S-K are both complex and both brutal. Although maybe Hersch doesn't get really brutal until 50 ft wave.

But I can see yer point, m. lyle.

They both do odd, off kilter things

during songs. I love the way early Muses songs go off on lyrical and musical tangents.

Kristin and Corin

both have shrieking vocals, both riot grrrl punk, both terrific. Haven't yet tracked down all TM albums yet though (I don't think)...and in a head to head competition I'd give the nod to S-K simply because of songs like #1 Must Have which blows me l'il mind.

I'm sidebusting yer fun and sorry I canna remember any Hot Rocks tunes off the top of my head.

I think I still prefer Throwing Muses

I think Kristin is the better lyricist and there's more variety on most Muses' albums than I found on 'Hot Rock'

Not my favourite SK album

My opinion of the album hasn't changed drastically, but was good to give it a few more listens.
Whenever I'm in an SK mood I tend to go for One Beat or The Woods - if people liked what they heard from this, they should definately check out these two albums.

Everyone's just agreeing

that it was great. We need to stir things up a bit to create a bit of discussion; come on guys!

I thought it was utter shit and anyone who liked it was gay.

HAI

I also think that God is Number's begining sounds

very similar to Pork and Beans, no?

It does! I mean, the same first note is played.

And, yeah, it is obviously the other way round. :)

I missed this.

I will start with the next album, it's a brilliant idea.

I can't add much

enjoyed the album, without being blown away by it. Will listen to a bit more Sleater Kinney.
I can very much hear the Throwing Muses similarity.
I have had about 6-7 listens of it but think I need more for some of these songs to register.
One thing that stands out is the quality of the guitar playing, some very interesting textures, I thought it was going to have a more punky sound to it.
im going for a 7/10
ok what album for week 2?

aww shit. seems i missed out on this

what was it? shame, i've always meant to get into sleater-kinney, but never properly known where to start and stuff.

did everyone go out and buy the record or was it just an upload?

it's the Hot Rock

of course we all bought it :)
What else do you expect from us?

No need to worry, we will be doing it all again with a new album this week

I bought it.

Off a mate at work who played with them years ago. Be interesting to see how many of these I can get...

great choice

never heard any S-K before, but will definitely be investigating further. Really liked the whole album, pretty much.

What's next!?! :D

I was a bit underwhelmed.

It was good, but nothing really stood out. Thought it plodded along really, but i've only listened to it three times.

hmmm.

it's growing on me with each listen. i'm still not a huge fan of the vocals but i do like the guitar work on it. i will likely keep listening as i feel at some point they will just *click* and then i'll impulse buy their entire catalogue and be really poor.

My thoughts

I had never heard anything by S-K before, my initial reaction was very positive, literally within seconds of the first song starting I thought I am going to like this. I really like the guitar sound and style of playing. My only real downer is that I find her voice slightly grating, although I have come round to it more on repeated listens.

I expected them to be more lo-fi and shouty, but I like it, 7 or 8 out of 10.

Also kind of reminded me of Sidi Bou Said. Can hear the Throwing Muses thing as well.

I missed out on this

so i will have to play catch up.
I own one Sleater-Kinney track from some matador records compilation I've got. End of the world or something it's called.
It's a good song so I look forward to hearing some more.

I enjoyed it

but I must profress to not listening to it enough. But yeah, I enjoyed it, the songs were immediate enough to make an impact but there was enough going on within them to prevent it getting samey, enjoyed the vocals too (wow this isn't exactly in depth, apologies!)

Bring on this week's album please : )

I really enjoyed the album

the vocal interplay is what fasinated me the most as well as the nice crunchy gutiars 'Get Up' was my faviroute track and though I enjoyed the crunchyness of the album it's the nice violin laced 'The Size Of Our Loved' which catches second... I'm just a sucker for string in that tuning and i'm a sucker for the vocals, in my opinion great choice.

Not a band album

I find the vocals a bit grating at times and I'm still waiting for THE song to wow me to pieces, but it gets better with every listen.

*bad

Woops.
