Why do musicians on messageboards never make it BIG?

There'll never be a DiSser in a band that makes it huge will there? Is this because people that use messageboards are more likely to make indie fanny music that'll never permeate the mainstream?

  • Los Campesinos!?

    • Brian May

    • Bigger than Los Campesinos

      • Brian May

      • I think your criteria are a bit strict then

I'd say Los Camp have "made it", whatever that really means.

        • i'd say to really make it

to get 'BIG', you've got to be earning enough not just to sustain a comfortable existence but to save for the future. sort of, selling enough records/gig tickets/etc to match the wage of a mid-range office worker, let's say

are LC! making this? i doubt it, i think bands like Doves and Elbow, who sell shedloads of records, are only just about making this.

i'd love to be wrong, of course

          • There are about 50 people in the UK doing this, no?

So it's hardly surprising none of them posts here.

    • something about permeating the mainstream

or lack thereof. not that that's a slight against LC!, but you don't see bands even of the sort of medium size like Elbow or someone posting loads on DiS

      • how do you know they don't though?

or that they *used* to? they probably won't advertise they're presence. and if they make it 'big', they don't really have time to waste on boards anymore anyways.

        • All true

Lily Allen posts on the internet defending herself under pseudonyms too. She said so on her TV show.

        • Gordon

from Bloc Party used to post on here quite regularly I seem to remember.

  • wasn't there once a rumour

that waaaay back in the day one or more of bloc party posted here occasionally

    • not sure on regular posting

but i think they recruited the drummer through the Musicians bored maybe?

  • um.

    lol?

  • Johnny Foreigner?

  • I mean, I doubt Chris Martin and Alex Turner

were on the internet posting their online crushes before they got big.

  • Martha Wainright?

  • I will!

You'll curse the day you ever doubted me!

  • Marble Krusher will prove you WRONG

  • because

if you waste time on the internet you've probably got nothing better to do. Then you end up on the internet instead of doing constructive things, like writing no. 1 hit pop songs.

so the reason people who post here don't get big is BECAUSE they post here. innit.

    • basic logic much?

      • Didn't members

of Million Dead meet on these boards or am I imagining things?

        • I've heard something like that...

        • no

don't think so. drummer and singer knew each other from school, drummer met guitarist working at cd shop. or something like that.

  • Simply Red

own the boards they dont need to go on the boards.

  • didnt bloc party post on dis at one point?

  • editors?

    :D

  • i heard that ian curtis posted on her once

    • *here here here here here

      jokez ruined by typos

no no no no no no no no no nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • danananackroyd

are soon to be pretty big right?

  • i'll prove this wrong one day

i write enough banal radio-friendly syrupy shit anyway, so i must be in for cash win if i ever get around to trying to do anything

  • "indie fanny music?"

I rock like a bastard, thank you very much.
Though again, this is unlikely to infiltrate the mainstream, as I suspect the Great British Public are mostly idiots.

  • because the type of music discussed on sites like this isn't massively popular.

we can think otherwise, but in the grand scheme of things it rarely is, but that's a good thing, shirley?

  • I HAVE BEEN TOLD

that one of Tokyo Police Club is a regular on somethingawful.

    that's similar.

  • What does 'made it big' mean?

Most of the bands mentioned, and most of the ones generally mentioned on this site will have pretty small fanbases. How many records have Johnny Foreigner sold, 5000? Yes, they're brilliant, popular amongst indie guitar-music types, but they/we/you probably make up a very small percent of the population. Same with Danananaykroyd, LC! & TPC to varying degrees, they might be popular amongst us and our friends, but 99% of people wouldn't have the foggiest who any of them were.

    • i'd say los campesinos

are a step up from some of the other bands mentioned, considering i've heard their music on 2 or 3 american tv programmes

      • sales-wise, compared to Danana & JF, definitely.

I'm not sure they'd have sold anywhere near as many as TPC, mind.

    • can we say 'made it big'

means that music is their job, they have a comfortable existence without having to get another job?

      • I still doubt that would apply to quite a few bands mentioned in this thread...

but yeah, it would make sense.

        • aye, but since when did

"making sense" matter one jot in indie points scoring contests? :P

  • fuck buttons

soundtracked a sky news story about princess diana.

    THREADWIN.

    • I've always wondered how stuff like that works.

Do people monitor what music's used where and when, or do people contact the labels and say 'right, we want to use a track on a programme, can we if we give you £200?'.

  • Who cares?

I'd never want to be in a band that made it BIG.

    • meard

    • ^^DIY TIL HE DIES^^

      • <3

But srsly. If i had a band that made it to the stage LC are; i'd be WELL chuffed.

        • but where from there?

  • id say LC count

theyve got alot of pitchfork attention, signed to arts and crafts, thats pretty impressive. Seeings this is a site for slightly niche music its not surprising, but didnt kaiser chiefs post?

    • LC really don't count

i'm sorry but big in niche music terms does not mean big in general terms. some of you really need to stick your head above the parapet and take a look at the world around you.

mike diver's famous in these parts but is he ACTUALLY famous? in, y'know, the wider world? no. ergo, he is not famous. and LC, despite being royalty round these parts, are not actually 'big'

i realise all this could be interpreted as me slagging LC off, but it's really not. just...some perspective here people

  • What about

bands who post to their own message boards?

  • I'm the second guitarist in the Pigeon Detectives

  • lol

im pretty sure they do. How would you ever know?
