what if, right, bands set up bank or paypal accounts, and those who have downloaded their music illegally but are too poor (or otherwise disinclined) to pay for a physical copy/ legal download just anonymously pay money into the account.
does this solve everything? thoughts?

oh
i just realised it might be radioheads idea
but it could be extended
It would involve a tacit acceptance
of illegal downloading on the label's part and therefore I can't see it happening.
I think subsrciption sites like emusic are a much better idea, for a limited monthly fee you can download a shed-load of music (and a damn sight cheaper than itunes). Cheap leagal downloads FTW.
yes
they would have to acknowledge illegal downloads, but its not exactly a secret. surely this would provide a revenue stream from people with irregular incomes, a love of music and racking guilt
If a record company
was really evil they could see who the paypal funds were being sent from, track the sender down from their email and catch them. Although I'm sure there would be some legal loopholes or something.
I still think there's a difference between
admitting that something happens in the real world and setting something up that might seem to condone it.
You wouldn't set up an honesty box on a street corner for any muggers or burglars who felt a bit guilty to deposit a small percentage of their ill gotten gains in, would you?
Before you start saying 'it's not the same thing!' - to the record companies I'm sure they think it is.
i suppose the majors wouldn't go for it
but desperate independent labels might find it useful
maybe think of it as the equivalent of a needle exchange, trying to lessen the ill effects of a bad thing which is bound to happen.
rubbish analogy soz

Did something similar to this didn't he?
it would be nice!
We like to send stuff straight out to people, but have had people take the cd and not pay........ its not like we are EMI..........
