Buy this album now. Everyone has to have a copy of this album. Forget about the links with RHCP, forget about Farrell's ego, forget about Satellite Party and forget about the reformation and 'Strays'.
Ritual De Lo Habitual is THE most overlooked 'classic' album. In terms of that era of 'alternative' rock it's up there with Locust Abortion Technician for audacity and weirdness, and Siamese Dream for sheer unmitigated musical joy and songwriting.
DiScuss.

I haven't listened to this in years.
I might put it on this afternoon. I always preferred Nothing's Shocking though.
Really?
Three Days though! Then She Did as well. And not to mention Classic Girl and Ain't No Right.
but...
Ocean Size, Mountain Song, Summertime Rolls...
I'll admit side 2 of Ritual... is the best thing they did, but as a whole I'll go for Nothing's Shocking. More bombast, less funk.
If anything, I'd say that Nothing's Shocking is a more 'funky' album
Both albums are great though. You got Kettle Whistle, the live album? It's really good. The S/T was recorded live too as well I think, but I don't have much time for that.
The S/T album was the first thing of theirs that I got.
In fact I think it may have been the first "alternative" album that I bought (I'd only listened to hip hop before), so I do have a bit of a soft spot for it.
I've got Kettle Whistle, and the Pornos albums, but didn't bother with Strays.
nothing's shocking is shockinly good
and their 1st ep is amazing and Kettle Whistle (the post Janes compilation) is a must have and I have never picked up "up from the catacombs" but i bet that's good too.
It's just a best of isn't it?
After Strays, I'm reluctant to go near any of Perry's more recent output.
Yes (nothing new or alternate or odd)
Only reason I can see getting it is cause "Nothing's Shocking" has never been remastered (that I know of) so the tracks culled from that record will sound better. I am just assuming that "Nothing's Shocking" hasn't been remasterc cause the sound is off- in my ears.
"Kettle Whistle" is a gem. There are two new tracks "Kettle Whistle" and "Maceo" (about Perry's cat). "Kettle Whistle" is one of my favorite Jane's songs- get it. Kettle also has some killer live tracks including an amazing "Three Days" live.
ive been saying this
since i got it 5 or so years ago and everyone stares at you blankly.
Its amazing, and clearly was a huge influence on so much other music. Im sure loadsa artists often cite JA but most people just think they were another trendy artsy obscure LA band.
I really like Nothings Shocking too, but Ritual is one of those landmark albums imo
i do love shocking, but ritual takes it
its just more musical and less brash. altho its not got anything as stupidly chilling as the first few mins of 'ted, just admit it'.
album artwork is fantastic too,
first song i ever heard was the live version of jane says on kerrang tv. that was a lifesaver!
i prefer Porno for Pyros
*shrugs*
Out.
and stay out
: 0
crikey hit a nerve there didn't i!
JA are great. PFP are great(er).
i bought one of their albums
and swapped with someone on here for Blue Lines.
both cds were shit
it was the one that doesnt have Stop or Stealing
Mezzanine>>>>>>> Blue Lines
but that's besides the point. Give JA another try, you might be surprised. And I think you got Nothing's Shocking, which I reckon is not even close to Ritual.
i do love The Hits
but that album was fucking turd. once bitten, twice shy
you are using big hair rock quotes to deny yourself good rock?
how ironic
i was disappointed
with some of their stuff i tried after ritual de lo habitual, but i thoroughly recommend this one.
RDLH
is an amazing LP love the song with the chorus of 'not unlike slapping yourself in the face' has all arabian instruments in too.
Shame they never did anything good after this though.
ritual de lo habitual
was possibly up there with Appetite for Destruction as being one of the most important records of my yoof.
they played three days
at reading about 5 years ago
and it was amaaaaazing.
:'(
I think Strays is a great album though.
I bought Nothing's Shocking around the same time (maybe the same day) as Sufer Rosa
It was summer of 1988 I think and there had been kind of a long dry spell in my rock music experience. The dry spell ended that day. I remember hearing Perry's voice coming over the record shop speakers and being immediately sucked in "this is a new voice that I like" and went straight up to the shopkeeper and inquired about it. Then when I saw the cover with the flaming, rocking siamese twins- I couldn't get my money out fast enough.
Porno for Pyros first album
is soooooooooooo underated!!!
thou if push came to shove Nothing shocking is my fav jane's album
^ thankyou
I used to love the rain of fire
that JA threw down from their lofty height. Now I listen to the Gun Club and realize just how much Perry and co borrowed from Jeffrey and co. It's all there, the voice, attitude and subject matter. Just replace "Destroying the Blues" with "Destroying Speed Metal and Led Zepplin"
nothings shocking is the best one f'sure
but
cos JA are the absolute shit
Ritual is absolutely splendid
Pixies Buttholes GnR Janes Dino
Oh what fun we had before Nirvana
and what fun we had when we did have Nirvana too
coming
down
the
MOUNTAIN
I have this album but haven't listened to it for a long time.
ive long meant
but never got round to buying a porno for pyros album. or kettle whistle for that matter (which after reading this thread i may) but what do porno for pyros sound like?
any recommendations?
i also like strays... i think if some other generic american rock act had put that out it would have been fine. but it really has nothing compared to shocking and ritual, it doesnt even sound like the same band at times the song writing is so different.
which makes me think it was either a big cash cow, or eric avery was really important and underated - he was an awesome bass player. the bass lines in strays are kind of cool but in a very attention seeking way i find. my this all sounds like bollocks.
although wikipedia
tells me that polar bear's first(?) albym is widely considered among JA fans to be the best post JA output from any of the original members.
The second Pornos album is better than the first,
so go for that

When I think of JA I always think
of the self titled live import album. You can tell how tight the band were, they were living and breathing the music they were playing - it also got me into Velvet Underground and the Stones with some choice covers...
