that have become somewhat popular nowadays, with the likes of scouting for girls and the wombats, be looked back on the same way that we look at boy bands?

No

because no one will care about them in 10 years time like they do about boy bands

I only say because

I was watching some old episodes of Never Mind The Buzzcocks

months*

Hmm

Interesting point you've got there!
In my opinion The Wombats might still have some potential to improve, but bands like Scouting for Girls and One Night Only are definitely some kind of boybands. They've got the same goals at least; reach a big audience (of girls) by making simple and charming popsongs. Just as the Backstreet Boys or Blue. So yeah, I guess yr right ^^

"indie"?

scouting for girls are a pop band, no?

You have to bear in mind that.....

approximately 0.15% of the population realise that 'indie' is short for independent.

The rest either don't care, think it's something to do with the emo*/mosher/grebo* kids that hang around outside Borders or are convinced that it's 'a new form of music that's sweeping the nation!'.

*Two more terms that nobody understands. I heard a kid being referred to as a 'grebo' today, I wanted to go and chat to him about Ned's Atomic Dustbin, but thought the better of it.

To be honest, indie is a fairly loose term

I was looking for a general term to describe the currently popular formula for success!
Well,I say success......

Also,

grebo?

"See also:

Crust Punk"

Fuck, bored music journos have a lot to answer for.

..........

in that wiki gribo article.. theyve hyperlinked 'hats'....

yes......but......

indie isn't "indie" now, is it.

I mean, I remember Erasure topping the "indie" charts on the Chart Show, week in week out.

Would anybody here call Erasure an indie band? - thought not.

"indie" to me is about a sound, a haircut, a clothing style. I used to say I listened to "indie", in the early 2000s. Now I avoid that word like the plague.

i reckon

they'll be viewed the same way I very bands like Cast and The Bluetones. Great for teenagers who are looking for accessible guitar music as a stepping stone to more advance tastes, but not of much artistic merit.

but

scouting for girls don't have a guitar player (nitpicking pointlessly).

I agree

the likes of The Wombats, The Pigeon Detectives will be the ones we chuckle about in 10 years time when we see them on an old NME compilation in a bargain bin

no

they appeal to a older audience who have taken them on board as part of a trend.
the boybands of yore seemed to entirely take over peoples lives, and younger people thus making on a deeper impact on their lives.

the bigger "indie" bands of now might be remembered like James or someone like that, the others will live in the same void as Menswe@r and the other forgotten britpop acts.

Menswe@r

can't be forgotten, if you remember them ;)

Mehnswe@r

had four or five great songs

not true.

*a tear*

indie has lost all sense of meaning. it used to be blur, then libs, then cribs.

What's wrong

with the cribs?

schmindie

there is nothing 'indpendent' about these 'indie' bands.

I feel a bit sorry

for Scouting for Girls. They're dreadful and they must know it. They must.

They do know it.

Their fans don't however, and here the problem lies!;)

You can see the

sadness in the singer's eyes as he once again pounds at the ivories as though beating out the frustration of being in such a non-band.

How did we get from this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxdCWdaUv18

to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUs9UdSKr5U

what happened? I know each to his own and variety is the spice of life but really...what happened?

I agree with the sentiment

of someone or other - I want all music to be good, I want quality control, I want to live in a world where pumping Ray Charles Georgia On My Mind onto the bus makes everyone slow down, smile and relax and see a granny say to a kid in a comedy face covering hoody 'this is such a wonderful song, isn't it' and him nod his agreement then help her carry her shopping home...I want to live in a world where we all share books not just DVDs. I want to live in a place where songs like that one about "doing someone" in da club get universally reviled as crass and a waste of noise.

I'm tired.
