NOISE - is it that great?

Having read all the gushing hyperbole on the various MBV threads, I was struck by the amount of people who said:

"omgzzzz that was amazing it was so loud that my ears bled"

Now that doesn't really appeal to me.

I want to hear lyrics and stuff, not just fuzz and distortion - that bores the fuck out of me. Am I a freak?

Disclaimer: I think MBV are okbut I haven't been to the gig

so... you're saying...

different people like different things?

:D

Band and Audiences and Venue Proprietors

Have to learn to turn it down a little for god sake. I can't hear the music anymore- it's freaking ridiculous

No, you are not a freak

I hate audiences screaming through entire shows like a bunch of toddlers trying to get their frustrations out.

Bands: Get a clue, do your homework, get a soundperson that isn't an idiot- fuck, errrrrrrrrr!

It is about how the noise completely envelopes you

It can be a very emotive experience.

Fair enough noise caused by bad sound engineering is one thing, but MBV blew the roof off the roundhouse last night (no, not literally) and left everybody speechless. I was left dumbfounded by the performance, as were many others.

Has to be witnessed to be understood I think.

True enough, I know that feeling well

and it is totally obtainable at decible levels that DON"T make you nauseous. It is so counterproductive. When people have to wear earplugs to protect themselves and really just to filter the distortion enough to be able to discern vocals and instruments- it's Stupidly loud at that point and I'm thinking someone is a complete anus.

It's not just sound

High decibels enable you to physically feel the music as well. It adds an extra sensory response to the experience.
Though it can't be very good for your ear drums.

I love the reverberation in my chest cavity

and nasal passages. I love the way loud music makes my nipples erect. I love when the floor shakes but high and low frequencies have a threshold for possible enjoyability. It just detracts from the music and it's idiotic. Maxium Volume=Maximum Results? yes but what is max? There has to be a Max, you know? (this is loud enough), this is LOUD, and AND it's still enjoyable.

it really doesn't appeal to me

it's one of the reasons why i don't really go to gigs any more - i've had some terrible experiences with ear pain/ringing after going to loud venues, and to be honest i like my ears too much. They've been good to me, so i'm going to repay the kindness

The MBV gig sounds like the primest of prime examples. I understand that music can be a visceral experience as well, but to damage your hearing such a freakish amount just strikes me as absurd. And maybe with MBV that's the point, but extreme loudness shouldn't be the default position for everything

i love aimless fuzz and distortion though

Deerhunter were fucking loud last night

I love how the sound really envelops and immerses you. Like a musical cocoon.

My ears probably won't in 20 years time when i'm partially deaf

zactly,

all about the physicality of music. Medical science'll've come up with a cure for tinitus in 10 or so years anyway! :0

how much are you two going to like deafness?

I hear that is a very enveloping sensation too.

come

again?

he he he

I dint c that cumming.

really

Noise is that great yes

but it doesn't have to be at 'my ears are literally bleeding' levels to leave that much of an impact. Well on me at least.

If you are wincing and covering your ears it is too loud. If you are reviewing the gig merely in terms of how loud the sound was then it was too loud. And lo, they are the rules which I have just made up.

do you no like it

when there is so much sound you cant talk to the person next to you let alone feel the space between you becuase music is gushing into every available gap, draping everything in the texture of whatever song is being played, so it hits yr ribs, shakes yr teeth, stings yr ears a little. mmm... loudness.

I no like it when it stings naw

Not being able to talk to the person next to you is par for the course isn't it?

the only ever time

a gig has scared me afterwards was Lightning Bolt. my head felt like it was in a goldfish bowl going through a fuzz pedal for about 4 days, by which point i was starting to worry that it was never going to go back to how it was.

a little ringing for a few hours afterwards doesnt bother me, it's usually worth it. i like it loud.

No, you are right to make this point

Since reading about the MBV gig, I've ordered some hi-fidelity ear plugs. I'm attending the Manchester gig on 29/7 and no way am I going to expose my ears to the level of abuse (for that is what it is) that others have complained about.

If I want to hear fuzz and noise I will stay at home and listen to something which uses it to good effect like TNV.
