I have just chosen my open university course for next year, I think this sounds so good! It's only my second year and I'm supposed to be doing level 2 not level 3 but this one jumped out at me.
http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/pdfs/A300.pdf
I'm going to apply NOW!
What are you studying next year?

german year 3.
i get to write my dissertation on Nietzsche, study german lit post 1900s, learn about the politics of language and language use and get good at translating stuff. i think i'm going to study russian cinema as well.
i hate you
hey walkingwithwolves,
why am i so wise?
i was reading that in science once
everyone took the piss out of the "ecce homo" because it had the word "homo" in it. They said Nietszche was gayyyyyyyyyyyyy. GAYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
Others have no soul.
Q: ARE WE NOT MEN?
A: WE ARE DEVO!
i <3 that book so much.
i have gone through it and highlighted my favourite quotes and put stars next to my favourite passages.
i love you
:D
<3
kiss
hey, i thought you thought i was an idiot?
I've got it sitting next to my bed
I should really put it in my bag so I can read it on the bus tomorrow.
yes, please do.
he is awesome. i was a tshirt with Nietzsche's FACE on it.
Why I am dynamite!
why i am fucking brilliant.
I am reading
Zarathustra for the first time at the moment. I know its lame, but when I first started reading Nietzsche I was told that I should read as much of his other stuff as I could. So 8 or 9 books later, here I am. Its exciting :)
:D
GUNTER GRASS!
GUNTER GRASS!
I might gotta read The Tin Drum again actually
History, English Lit, Philosophy, Critical Thinking A level, and hopefully Economics AS
I'm going to apply for
Durham - History and Philosophy
Oxford - History
UCL - European Social and Political Studies / Slavic/East European History
LSE - International Relations and History / Philosophy, Logic and the Scientific Method
Liverpool - History and Philosophy
how come you want to do history and politics elsewhere but not at oxford
?
you can't do history and philosophy at oxford :(
i'm assuming you meant philosophy and not politics
no, i meant politics.
cos like, you're applying for it at ucl and lse.
european social and political studies
involves history, politics, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, economics, and a language; you do a general course in the first semester that covers everything and then specialise.
GUESS WHICH TWO I'M CHOOSING LOL :D
and for LSE i was going to just choose [international] history but their international relations courses look really interesting, you're allowed to do that right :(
i dunno though, i might still go for history and politics and oxford, i might still do a lot of things aaaaaaaaah
also is it bad i've got what would be an AAB or ABB offer as an insurance choice :(
probably not,
as long as you're confident in it. i think my insurance was something like that too. ultimately, i was pretty sure i'd get it, so whatever.
i get the impression his+pol is one of the better joint honours here. some joint honours are really awful and un-integrated, but his+pol seems to work well, or something.
probably not a great idea
I did this, banked on three As and superb references, and it didn't work out. But that was years ago. And I didn't do any revising at any point
LSE would be awsome
I bum that course
:D *high five* which one?
Phil, Logic and the Scientific Method is truly epic, i EEEEEEEEE'd when I saw it. As is their massive list of International History courses.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Go there. Go there.
OKAY
Have you read Collingwood
Awesome philosopher of history (among other stuff)
History
at Edinburgh.
Hey! What's the best thing to come out of Edinburgh?
The train to Glasgow!
So true!
:)
english lit yo
web design/flash
well, I will do once I get off my arse and phone up the college and sort it out!
Secong year fine art at Dundee uni.
Criminology Masters
English Literature Year 2
Chaucer: Texts, Contexts, Conflicts
Power and Gender in Early Modern Literature
Reading the 19th Century
Creative Writing: Fiction
The Western In Film
Southern Literature
Nothing
I'm just going to teach myself everything I need to know the night before my exams, like I did this year.
that is a rather fit course!
I started reading that but had to give up...
but that's because I've had two spells of working at the OU in their exams and projects department, so I've seen far too many exam scripts/papers/projects than I ever need to. But the courses at the OU seem pretty decent!
I'm doing an MA in Journalism starting in September.
Thats what I probably should be doing
I've done music journalism since forever but for some reason the thought of doing a whole degree in journalism doesn't appeal.
Hope you enjoy yours!
Me too, moving to London and all, innit.
Which is why I'm working at the OU doing a very boring job, for the time being. It all links in, see?
i want your job
are they nice people to work for?
Generally, yeah, pretty nice.
I'm only temporary (but have done it twice before) so, obviously, I get all of the shit work. It's OK sometimes because I can just drift off and nobody notices...
Scriptwriting
with a slice of independant film production at Bournemouth (hope hope hope).
*Independent
always with the 'a'.
Wow! That looks really interesting.
In 12 weeks time I shall be studying English at either UCL or Kings.
If you do end up
going to Kings, make sure you take at least one option taught by a guy called Neil Vickers. Avant-Garde lecturing FTW.
Ha, okay.
Actually, I lied. Kings would be Comparative Literature, which I think you're taking...? Is it rubbish or quite good?
Oh its really good
You do get a massive choice of options. Which foreign language are you coming in with? Just dont set your heart on doing too many English dept. options. The French, Spanish and German departments are all really helpful and run amazing courses, but for some incomprehensible reason the English department are really anal about letting Complit students on their courses. Complit is a pretty small department too, so sometimes you can feel a bit uncatered for/shut off. But other than that, I wholeheartedly recommend it, I have no regrets!
I'd be doing French or Spanish.
And yeah, I went to an Applicants day they held in March, and met the people running the course and thought it all seemed really quite interesting.
Yeah, the department seems very small. I think they said they'd accepted 24 this year, and that that was the biggest year group yet. So, you must have joined in the 2nd or 3rd year of the degree, right?
Thanks for the reassurance and stuff!
Thats ok!
I think it was only the second year, so theyre still ironing things out a tiny bit. But yep you should be more than fine with French and Spanish. Most people only had one foreign language and they still had tons to choose from, so youll be in an even better position. Plus, itd be awesome to have another DiSer in the department!
i applied for comp lit and classics!
didn't use it though.
i meant to write more there.
is it fun? should i regret not going?
Hopefully
English Literature
Psychology
History
Chemistry, Maths, Medieval History for A level
then hopefully an undergraduate masters in chemistry with industiral placement
yes I am a nerd, kthnxbye
english, history, RS, biology
essays, much?
essays are great though
I love them. Once you've got the style of writing down, if you're at least reasonably keen on the subject they're fine. Or at least, about twenty times easier than trying to do any kind of 'creative' writing.
yeah, same :D
they're the one thing I excel in. Rs sounds really interesting, too.
History is the best thing ever
prepare for hard work but it being fully worth it.
I actually find this very reassuring.
Thanks :)
I'm doing similar...
English Lang/Lit, History, Biology and Drama. Drama worries me as the department is shit, bad choice?
Theatre Production Arts, year one...
specialising in stage management and sound production. it's gonna be stressful, 9-6pm, mon-fri :'(
oooooh.
sounds interesting though.
it's so much fun
i'd recommend it to anyone, srs.
kickass stuff
1. Behaviour and its evolution, animal and human
concerns the evolutionary origins of human behaviour : what human behaviour has in common with the behaviours of other species versus what is uniquely human. It also focuses on the relationship between human cultural processes and human genetic processes.
2. Human genetics and evolution
provides an overview of the many recent advances in human genetics and their implications for contemporary society. Topics include : human genome organization, the basis of human genetic diversity, the genetics of disease.
3. Human ecology
explores the ways in which humans beings both shape their environments and are shaped by them. The course focuses on the human ecology of nutrition, disease and reproduction and the numerous ways in which culture and biology interact.
4. Demography and population
uses quantitative data to analyse birth, death, ageing and migration. It then explains these in terms of a variety of social and biological factors, such as marriage, war and family structures.
5. Sociological theory
examines issues such as class, gender, deviance, and social norms, using the ideas of Marx, Weber and Durkheim. A range of approaches which look at the relation between social structure and individual action are also considered.
i just got 15 books out to read on this stuff over the summer. \m/
what's your degree/whatever in?
i predict that he will say
'human sciences'
that's an interesting take on it
i was actually considering going with a 'comedy' reponse, but that fell through.
i think its for the best.
you do actually do human sciences though don't you? i haven't misremembered have i?
no lol, i do *totally unrelated subject*
i see i initially chose wisely.
what do you do anyway, history? classics? english?
i see this is answered below
as you were
i predict that you will be right
i have never heard of such a thing though
i believe this qualifies me as ignorant
Oh, you,
did you end up reading The Moral Animal?
Comparative Literature 3rd Year
Surrealism
Theatre and Philosophy
Pre-Socratics
Ethics, Religion and Philosophy
Dissertation on Nietzsche and Beckett/Theatre of the Absurd :D
I think its going to be a good year
that isn't at glasgow uni is it?
i was thinking about doing that course. IT SOUNDED ACE.
Nein
Im at Kings. But its a pretty damn good course (in some respects). Some of the other departments arent very helpful towards Complit - we have to rely on them to give us places, but theyre really limited.
i was going to do that too
in amongst their MASSIVE LOAD of other brilliant courses but then i thought shit, glasgow is quite far
*thinks*
you know what else it is?
AWESOME.
glasgow uni is quite nice, it reminds me of hogwarts. not going there though.
mmmmmm theatre of the absurd
MERDRE!!!!!!!
:D:D
Jarry
is truly heroic :)
Philosophy+french at ediburgh uni
I cant wait
(1st year, obvs)
havn't chosen my third subject yet, possibly english spanish or geography
I may be misinterpreting
your post, and apologies if i am... but you are planning to do three degrees simultaneously?
Isn't it just the crazy Scottish system
and their crazy first year?
My main degree is joint honours in french+philosophy
and i can take a 3rd subject in the first year. I think over the course of the 4 year degree you can go down either route and refine your course etc so i could end up studying just french, just philosophy or something completely different.
Ah, now i understand.
Much appreciation. It's not that dissimilar to many courses i've researched into.
Philosophy + French =
L'ETRE ET LE NEANT, FTW!!!
spanish at edinburgh is pretty bad
i wouldnt recommend it...
How so?
It would make sense to do something else because i only want to learn the language. Not too bothered about the cultural aspects etc. I could just do night classes or something.
well
its not very well taught, a lot of the lecturers are wankers, and you'll end up having to read a lot of pretty obscure and to be honest boring literature that most hispanic people dont even care about. i'd give it a bit of consideration though, there's probably stuff you'd enjoy more that you could be doing. from what i remember theyre reasonably lax in the first few weeks so you can go see whether you like it or not and then change. i did spanish and portuguese at edinburgh as my degree and i wouldnt really say the spanish bit got worthwhile till about 3rd year. italian is meant to be quite good fun, and from what youve said about most of the people who do english really like it. i did philosophy and classical literature in first year and both of those were great.
a recommendation though, there's a few pretty cool school of languages half courses in second year. european cinema and portuguese and whatever. those are pretty cool when the time comes.
ah that's great
thanks
not sure when i'm studying each bit,
but over the next two years i'm probably doing
epic (classical and english)
tragedy (classical and english)
ancient and modern literary theory and rhetoric
20th century english lit
latin lit of the 1st century bc
and tentatively i'm thinking
american literature or maybe conrad or something, or maybe something more unusual
as well as
either historiography or ovid, or maybe something else. but probably historiography.
i like having quite a lot of choice for finals. it is nice.
Philosophy and Econonics Bsc Cambridge
My grandfather was a tax inspector, my father is an economcist, and i've slowly succumbed to that lifestyle myself as welll.
By the way Old Nietzche is a genius,"Human, all too human", is the best thing he ever wrote though
History, 1st year
cheers.
errr
Hispanic Studies at UCL hopefully.
if not, English and Hispanic Studies at Kings.
Art foundation
Camberwell college
London
Yey
Everyone seems to be doing artsy subjects
except me :(
don't think thats true
other people have said their doing sciences, economics, languages.... see about 4 posts up.
I wish I was suited to hard sciences, I respect people who can do them.
languages are 'artsy subjects'
Really?
When I did foreign languages at school there was no artsy content at all, it was all vocab and grammar. Maybe it changes at a higher level. The Latin GCSE I aborted halfway through had history content.
when you do languages at university
its more about the study of literature, along with culture and history.
i know the language students i know are all literature students of the language they are studying. similarly, as a classics and english student, i study latin literature. the language is merely a means to that end.
I think linguistics + language courses
could be an exception to that rule though
I think Oxford
is kinda exceptional in this regard(even WRT Cambridge, who do some lit but not as the focus of the degree). I have a friend at Cardiff, which is hardly a bad uni, who does spanish with something else and he doesn't do ANY literature at all.
really?
but surely he does something other than language? i mean, it doesn't take very long to learn a language, how do they fill out the degree!?!?!
thats not really true at all
loads of universities teach literature/culture as part of modern languages degrees, i'd say probably all the traditional unis do, some places these days do vocational training for modern languages courses, so you do translation/interpreting instead but thats the exception rather than the rule.
oxford and cambridge arent particularly good places to study languages at undergrad level, the level of language teaching tends to be pretty poor generally speaking, there's no real reason to go to oxbridge if modern languages are your thing, there are much better options
no, not true
in a years time i'll probably look like cervantes from all the essays and non arty stuff.
3rd year LLB Law
Company Law/Financial Services Law & Policy/Employment Law/Law of Trusts and a research project on Human Rights in America. Can't wait!
Film Production year 2
UCCA Farnham.
Yup.
FARNHAM
WOOP WOOP.
sorry.
Do DiSers from the same Universities
tend to gravitate towards each other in reality to socialise thanks to a common interest?
I'm still waiting to meet
Some fellow Open students on DiS. You all go to traditional universities though!
Nadda
Is that some sort of secret service?
nothing
(Hopefully) PhD law
at Warwick. Fingers crossed!
my masters
of science in light and lighting. :)
when you're done you'll be a
MASTER OF SCIENCE!
:D
nice work :)
ASLevels
but I don't really know which subjects to choose.
English lit
taking the open ended question to new levels since 1951.
:D
can we make such sweeping
judgements? what is 'open-ended'? what is a 'question'? can any 'question' truly be 'open-ended'?
^english literature
there is literally no right or wrong answer. i love it.
its sole aim
is the production of discourse. You literally (boom) cant lose!
NO
It's a cunt of a subject. unless you get really AMAZING texts you will hate it. it's boring as virtue and you will frequently fall asleep in lessons.
what do you like?
If I help you choose the right subjects, it will make up somewhat for my own epic failure in choices.
...
I don't know. I'm pretty much 'alright/quite good' at everything, and don't really enjoy one subject anymore than another. This has made things quite difficult.
I'll probabaly do History. And that's about as far as i've got.
for the first year since i was 5,
nothing.
that feels weird..
...
3 courses on Real analysis
Abstract Algebra
2 courses on Linear Algebra
2 Courses on Geometry
Frege
General Philosophy
2 Courses on Logic
And probably audit some linguistics/2nd year algebra/geometry if I have time
Yum.
.
music production, year two
year one was pretty terrible.
however next year, i will begin modules on music for film and television and electronic music which may be a little better...
don't study music production.
last year of my PhD
ie trying to do too much work in one year due to rampant addiction to this website for the first two years. I'm apprehensive.
Law
dunno what yet
...

How to teach my degree subject to secondary school children
Is your degree in making love?
Cultural Criticism (second year)
modules include:
The Film Musical
Music and Nation
Introduction to Children's Literature
Queer Theory
Posthumanism
Contemporary Women's Writing
etc.
The reading lists include everything from Harry Potter to England's Dreaming. I'm very excited.
i'm starting an MA at Newcastle Uni in September
this one:-
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/subjects/politics/courses/161
Although it's called something Studies, and is therefore a mickey mouse course. the ones ending in politics weren't even available when i applied.
I also recommend that
if you find a copy of the Guardian University Guide 2008 (thick white thing with some chuck taylors on the front) that you read the profile that someone I know got in trouble for writing.
It's pretty much the truth about university life - not the usual bollocks those things include (compare it to the Northumbria Uni profile for a contrasting IAM AN STUDENT! account of the same city.)
blissful, sweet
NOTHING.
But then International Development and French. Hopefully...
-
AS Government and Politics, English Lit, Biology and Chemistry.
I hope I get in as I really don't want to do any other subjects.
French and German at Bristol University
I'm quite excited, the open day was wonderful.
Awesome
A good friend is doing the same course, she loves it! The modern languages ball is really good and they had an epic weekend in Berlin too. Are you gonna be in a student house or in halls?
That's good to hear!
I've applied to a student house, 61/63 St Michael's Road, which Athenethegreat informs me is a pretty good place to live!
Sure is
Not a particularly big house but great location, and you'll probably form closer friends and be a tighter community than other places. The friend I mentioned is also President of Orbital, so you're gonna have a great fresher's week too!
