kit share etiquette

we've been asked to support a touring band in a few weeks - album launch, all that shiz.

They said "oh by the way, you'll need to bring your drum kit for us to use." They have breakables at least.

We seem to bring drums if we headline or support at the moment!

opinions?

  • Depends how they put it i suppose

If they asked nicely, or there was some sort of compromise (you could use their bass amp or something?) then it seems ok.

The way it sounds up there is pretty annoying though. I gather you have to lug the kit around as well?

  • Tell them to be professional

  • Get some toy drums.

Usually I would have thought headliners would bring a drum kit, but at least they asked in advance. When headliners turn up and expect to be lent kit really annoys me.
(Once this happened with an old band, but we used a drum machine at the time. Hahaha.)

  • If they put it like that

then it's a bit off. I would ask for a compromise, use their bass amp etc.

    • ^^

yep. as support we're more used to using our amps, cabs and breakables but when headlining, the reverse.

  • Call them

a Fat Cow, then hang up

  • are they from abroad?

If not they should totally have their own kit!

  • Why the hell

Haven't they got their own drum kit?

I'll lend you my lad's drums to lend to them. They're about a foot high, two toms and a kick and are made by Bontempi. The sound they produce is a bit like cardboard boxes, but with less "oomph" :D

    • there really are some

wankers out there. one time i supported a band called quack quack and they wouldn't even lend their keyboard stand. i thought they were joking at first. tell them to fuck off unless you really think doing these gigs will make the blindest bit of difference, which it almost certainly won't. there's no need to get treated like shit. i expect you'll be losing quite a bit of money by doing it too. personally i wouldn't bother.

  • say you don't have room

in the car to bring a drum kit, and see what they say. if they accept it and try and find one from somewhere else, they are cool. if they kick up a fuss and have a tantrum, fuck them.

    • Poor show

I'd still let them do it, though I would check with the MU about gig agreements. Are they going to pay for damage to your gear? You'll be insured if you're an MU member, but still - get it checked and speak to their management.

      • I've always

been of the opinion bands should help each other out, for the most part every band I have played a gig with does.
Apart from some band I played with at Rouge on Charring Cross a couple years back.

We lent them our drum kit & afterwards our singers guitar amp died & they would not let us use one of their guitar amps, proper twunts!
