Grand Prix - what a fantastic album. I really liked Bandwagonesque, but waow...
Reply
I prefer Bandwagonesque
But they were a great, great band.
Sparky's Dream, About You, Star Sign, Alcoholiday...they wrote some amazing songs.
Past tense?
They're still going!
New album next year.....possibly:)
Are they?!
I honestly thought they'd split up. This makes me happy.
New album is being worked on
Trust me:)
Last one Man Made was great too.
Its one of my favourite albums ever Grand Prix
I like Bandwagonesque but just not quite as much.
I have just bought thirteen...
is it any good?
Everything Flows
from their Peel session is my favourite track
^^ No
IMO, only album of theres i don't like, but it does have some classics on there, RADIO, NORMAN 3, CABBAGE!
best album is Songs from Northern Britain, or Words of Wisdom and hope, but that doesnt really count does it?
'Grand Prix'
...is probably my favourite, but 'Songs From Northern Britian' does have 'I Don't Want Control Of You' on it which is about as close to a perfect melody as I've ever heard.
yes
to Songs From Northern Britain. I Don't Want Control Of You is one of the finest indie-pop moments ever. Love that album.
Love this album
9/10 for me. My band is influenced loads by this band
So, if I'm not mistaken
was Elliott Smith. There are definite echoes of Teenage Fanclub in his later stuff.
Elliott
I can kind of see that harmony wise. Figure 8 is a little bit Fanclub
I remember even at the time
being surprised that 'Spaky's Dream' didn't go to number one and stay there for a while. It's one of those classic, wonderful songs like 'There She Goes' but it deserves much more attention than it gets. It's a beaut.
there's something weird going on with DiS at the moment, whichever 'old' band I dig out and stick in my car for a retro-listen seems to end up getting mentioned on here soon after.
Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From is probably my favourite song of theirs. Or Ain't That Enough, which makes Northern Britain their best album imo. Oh wait, Grand Prix has Neil Jung, Versimilitude, and Sparky's Dream on it so it might be that one!
great band
despite seeing them in my wasted youth, inc The Boy Hairdressers, I didn't get into them till late but better late than never. The last album, Man Made is also great. Still a great live band, their final gig of a tour in 2005 was in Glasgow and it's one of the best gigs I've ever been to. Have seen them in large and small venues, always good. Last thing I got was the Peel Session with Frank Black
Yes
Grand Prix is fucking superb.
Agreed
I recently bought Grand Prix and Bandwagonesque. Love Grand Prix so much I've not got round to fully appreciating Bandwagonesqe yet.
one of my favourite bands
i prefer Songs from Northern Britain to Grand Prix and Bandwagonesque
SO MANY HARMONEEZ
p.s
I Don't Want Control of You has been my phone ring tone for a VERY long time.
TFC order of greatness
according to me:
Grand Prix
Bandwagonesque
Songs from Northern Britain
Thirteen
A Catholic Education
Howdy
Man-made
The King (SO long since I heard it - can't believe I sold it!)
Didn't hear Words of Wisdom and Hope but I find Jad Fair annoying.
Worth getting the comp Deep Fried Fanclub which has some ace tunes - including God Knows it's True, possibly my favourite TFC song ever.
In order of greatness #2
Bandwagonesque (a top ten of all time album)
Thirteen
Catholic Education
Grand Prix
Songs from Northern britain (this gets pushed up a place or two if listened to hilst on a driving holday in Scotland)
Howdy (the first of theirs to be a less than 8 out of 10 record).
Not heard Man made.
I wouldn't worry too much about Man-made
pretty unmemorable.
I really hope they can make another great album. The last two have been poor.
Truth
Although they always seem to manage a brilliant song. I really like Cells from Man-Made, and Howdy has I Need Direction which is great. God, i haven't listed to that for AGES.
*listened
Oh and Escher off of Thirteen
is das bomb.
As is
The Cabbage.
greatest TFC songs
according to me:
In sort of order
God Knows It’s True
Don’t Look Back
Alcoholiday
Everything Flows
Radio
Sparky’s Dream
Eternal Light
December
Fear of Flying
Verisimilitude
Free Again
Too hard!
But:
Alcholiday, The Concept, Starsign, Escher, Cabbage, Everything Flows, About You, Aint that Enough, So Far Gone, God Knows its true, and Free Again are def in with a shout.
Ouch, can't do it!
Got as far as:
About You and Everything Flows being in it then gave up...
I think
it's a toss up between Sparky's Dream and Alcoholiday for my favourite. Sparky's Dream has the better melody, but Alcoholiday has that brilliant sunny guitar fuzz all over it.
the whole of 'Songs From Northern Britain'
is just stunning. Consistently great throughout.
Also....
..."Gene Clark" should get a mention. Great song!
Grand Prix would have been better without the Britpop production
but it's still great. 'Songs From Northern Britain' is an overlooked classic, 'Man Made' is a little gem too. 'Bandwagonesque' will always have a special place in my heart as I remember seeing it on the shelves of older, cooler friends when I was a kid and marvelling over the cover art, plus 'Alcoholiday' is one of the best songs of the 90s.
Even the much-derided 'Thirteen' has some glorious moments- 'Escher' and 'The Cabbage' are power pop at it's finest.
The version of 'Everything Flows' that appears on the 'Teenage Fanclub Have Lost It' EP is as beautiful a rendition of a song as I have heard.
Fantastic band- not remotely challenging or innovative, but it doesn't matter as the songs are so good. I have never understood how the likes of Travis sold so many records while the Fannies languished in relative obscurity.
Its because Travis made it more route one for the people
Turn turn turn turn turn turn turn turn!
Sing, sing, siiiiiing, if you sing, sing sing sing.
Etc.
There is...
a really nice version of 'Alchoholiday' on the new album by Mark Morris (Bluetones).
Bandwagonesque & Thirteen....
...badly need to be remastered. The CDs sound a bit rubbish now
This dead true
Bandwagonesque sounds horribly tinny.
^ what?
Its the mlst warm sonding fuzz record imaginable. Tinny? Eh?
most*

Howdy, Disco Citizens!
...
Surprised at the lack of love for Man-made. I thought it was a step up from 'Howdy!' personally. It actually feels like quite a diverse record for the Fannies. 'Grand Prix' is their crowning glory no doubt about it. 'Bandwagonesque' is good too but has a slightly dated grunge aspect to it. I've always classed The Lemonheads as their american counterparts. Or vice-versa. Not sure which band I prefer?
