Kiss of death: Gene Simmons thinks Radiohead are killing music industry

Some people just don't know when to keep their tongue in their gobs. Kiss lynchpin Gene Simmons reckons Radiohead are killing the music business and their live show is boring.

Simmons, talking to WENN, said: "The record industry is dead. It's six feet underground and unfortunately the fans have done this. They've decided to download and file share. There is no record industry around so we're going to wait until everybody settles down and becomes civilised. As soon as the record industry pops its head up we'll record new material."

He's clearly not a fan and has recently been quoted saying: "I admire bands like Radiohead, but the idea of being that serious? Fuck that, get up on stage and blow shit up! Bands that stand by their microphones and strum their guitars are forgetting one important point - people are bringing their eyes, it's audio and visual. If you're not fulfilling the visual part, it's like watching a movie with your eyes closed.

"One of the biggest compliments we get is [people saying], 'I fucking hate their music but that's the best show I ever saw in my life'."

...fair enough?

is this based on comments he made to Lala Laverne

on Saturday? It was a hilariously incompetent interview - she blatantly had no idea how to follow up the line of questioning and the actually quite valid points he brought up.

i agree

with the stage show point of view, as in that if the preformer(s) stand there doing nothing its like just listening to the cd on your own.

also, "Some people just don't know when to keep their tongue in their gobs" - fried gold.

oh

and sorry to be pernickety, but you're misreporting - he didn't slag off radiohead's music or live show, he slated the freetard model.

The comments about visual things in live shows was a general criticism of many bands.

Seany seany seany... i fort you knew better than to repeat comments from the Sun...

have added the sources now

saw this story on a few other sites, none of which had a source for the comments but 20mins of googling later and I found them all on WENN http://uk.news.yahoo.com/wenn/20080613/ten-simmons-slams-boring-bands-c60bd6d.html

:)

now i am satisified. Jack and Coke on me next time i see you.... Boring by the Sea? I have NEWS.

i drunkenly agreed to dj the aftershow months ago

nearly forgot all about it.

you do have to agree that

kiss put on one hell of a stage show. but their music is so awful the bad faaaar outweighs the good

^^^^^

Having just seen Kiss i have to disagree. One of the best shows you will ever see.

I

was saying Kiss are probably amazing live, with all the zip wires and pyrotechnics and that.

He's got a point though,

there's no showmen or actual performers anymore in music, everyone takes themselves so seriously *sigh*.

Freddie Mercury at LiveAid or Prince's "Sign 'O' the Times" DVD are essential viewing to see real performers in action.

Slipknot?

Sufjan Stevens? Beck?

^ they look sick

As for Simmons, put that coital weapon away you dirty old man.

Slipknot...

purrleeeease.

Beck I have seen, though wouldn't go as far as calling him a performer as such in the way Mercury and Prince are, you dig? Though good call with Flamming Lips (below), hadn't thought about them!

hes got a point

i hate kiss, but dont really care about radiohead either so fair game

Clearly

More bands should sell pinball machines and coffins. It's the only way to save the industry.

i do hope

personas like Mercury and Prince come back around...I think it's just the stage of things we're at in the music industry though...hopefully it'll all come back round.

But I wouldn't go calling Radiohead's live show boring...

If Kiss aren't realising any new material until people stop downloading

this is a good thing - Psycho Circus only had one good song on it (maybe two if i was being ultra generous)

What about the tune 'Kiss Loves You' by Lach

here you have a nerdy anti-folker singing a tune about being a nerdy anti-folker who loves Kiss and has a Kiss lunchbox, sung in a style (particularly live) that Kiss would clearly despise, but sung in the style of a Kiss song as if being sung by a nerdy anti-folker, which he is. And does. Erm, what am i talking about?

What. A.Stupid.Cunt

So he is saying he will only make music to make money? fair enough if he had none but the guy has plenty.
He FAILED to become the next ozzy ozbourne with that show (which I didn't even watch)
blah blah.. the guy is a dick. a total dick.
I have to watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bvx_MqD6lA

to make myself feel better.
(his face is on a plate)

the thought of.....

radiohead wearing make-up based on cats and other animals whilst playing live doesn't bear thinking about........
fat slob Simmons totally misses the point here - if radiohead are like a chekhov play, then kiss are a jim davidson christmas panto.......

spot on

Standing around playing

At least Yorke shows emotion. Anyone been to a fucking Justice show? I've never seen such lack of emotion, ever.
Maybe from a Vulcan.

Also, I always say this, but Craig Finn of The Hold Steady is a performer to the core. I've never seen anyone so happy to be on stage in my life.

I was at this press conference

And he didnt mention Radiohead so really putting them in the news story is just a way of attracting traffic.

Comparing Justice to Radiohead

is about as silly as comparing Radiohead to Kiss.

:D

"Fuck that, get up on stage and blow shit up!"

Kiss

Pre OK Computer Radiohead were really edgy live, mainly because of Jonny and Thom putting a lot of energy into the performance. Since then they appear to perform as introverts, and if you are not drawn into the music it becomes a piss boring show. Kiss is the diametric opposite, but Simmons should work on his own act a bit, because the Stooges they are not... having a colossal explosion every five minutes may indeed stop the audience getting bored, but it's no substitute for genuine adrenaline.

I would love

"Fuck that, get up on stage and blow shit up

thom yorke to come on and say this whilst Phil Selway rotated in a giant suspended kit and jonny fired glitter cannons from his laptop. Pyro during the National Anthem would be awesome.

Okay, let's say that:

" If you're not fulfilling the visual part, it's like watching a movie with your eyes closed"

but to be fair, if you're not fulfilling the audio part why are you even in a band?

well said

IN FACT

if it means less moronic crap like Kiss and Dio and Judas Priest and all these awful metal bands I was forced to put up with then good fucking riddance
