Whether new or old, what have you heard/seen live for the first time recently and loved, and how did you find out about them? And post a link to their stuff! Mine would be Lizzy Mercier Descloux (http://www.last.fm/music/Lizzy+Mercier+Descloux), a late French artist popular in the 70s who combined new-wave punk with African influences (this might actually be an appropriate time to use the word Afrobeat!), and incredible rhythm. I found her on Camille's similar artists on Last.fm.
Your turn!

Elle S'appelle and Ipso Facto
I’ve got 2 bands, I’ve seen both their names around here, but had never listened to either of them until the last week or so.
First one is Elle S’appelle, I downloaded their single Little Flame, after seeing that they were playing Latitude. Really, really like it and the other songs of theirs I’ve now heard
http://www.myspace.com/ellesappelleband
Second is Ipso Facto, their track Five Called Stars really stood out as something a bit different on the generic CD free with the last Artrocker. Still only heard that song though, hope their other stuff isn’t shit.
http://www.myspace.com/ipsofactomyspace
I think
although I could be wrong, that Ipso Facto had the chalet under ours at ATP. Course, they could just have been similarly nicely goth-ish styled girls.
The Adam Brown
I seen Jape at the weekend
Great music, lively, stage diving and all that. http://www.myspace.com/richiejape
seconded
new alubm is amazing
either High Places
from reading things on here as they where suporting my beloved Deerhunter. I think I will discribe them as Aqua-Tropicana-Shoegaze-Pop.
Pictureplane who I found out about in a HEALTH interview on Pitchfork. Then I investigated more on myspace and found a whole truckload of bands from the same area that are just brilliant, thruogh then and a Native Denver fella commenting about it on my blog. They sound a bit like Electro-Shoegaze-Baltimore-Beat-8-Bit-Pop
Wow, High Places are great
Just having a listen on their Myspace, think I may join eMusic to get their EP. Thanks!
no problem
they are ace I cant wait to hear an alums worth. I completely forgot to pick up the CD they had for sale at the gig doh :(
Pictureplane
fucking owns!
damn right
his stuff is wicked. There are loadsa ace bands from Denver ranging from noisey freaks to electro stuff they come from a all ages art space called Rhinoceropolis. BDRMPPL are ace too as are Alphabets.
I really like LMD too
I listened to the album by Text (band with members of Refused) this morning, and I think its really quite good. Its a little bit psychopathic, with genres not so much crossing over as violently humping each other in the most bizarre way possible. It may take a few more listens to get "into" (if thats possible) , but on first impressions but I was pleasantly surprised. Also, I had never listened to Gang Gang Dance before this morning, but from what Ive heard so far, I like them a lot.
Triple School
punk from glasgow
http://www.myspace.com/tripleschool
Dutch Uncles
Definitely worth checking out. Kind of math-rocky with all the odd time signatures but great melodies and tunes so you barely notice.

Thoughts?
PNAU.
For my blog i've asked everyone to list what they think will be their top 5 listened songs over summer....
I swear to god that all of the PNAU tracks that i have fit this category!!
Racecar Red..
..through Artrocker.
http://www.myspace.com/racecarred
(Listen to SHRIMP)
Wild Strawberries is so so good
And the whole album encapsulates summer funs.

They don't have to be new bands!
.
Trouble Books
ambienty dream noisepop from akron ohio. one of my favourite albums this year. they're giving their album out for free on one blog.

Lady and the Lost Boys

Still plugging eh?
It must have been about.. 4 months ago we had this conversation! haha
.
I normally post LATB in most of these sorts of threads.
Valina.
They remind me of a more fun version of Shellac.
Rogue Wave
Fell in love with 'Lake Michigan' and the album, 'Asleep At Heaven's Gate' is excellent.
Hush the Many (heed the few)
They are the last band I discovered through this very website here and are aceness on a stick.
Parson Red Heads
I agree on so many levels.
Found here.
Aceness + Stick = True.
And they are ever so ever so friendly!
Do you mean
Parson Red Heads? I posted on here about them a couple of weeks ago to little interest. Fantastic band
Nope. Hush the Many (Heed the Few)
although i'm sure Parson Red Heads are also fantastic, you know what, i'll have a look now ;)
The ABC Club
from Halifax. Saw them during Bradford Music Week at the end of last month and they were stunning, wonderful lead singer. Don't think they've released anything yet but you can download their demos from their myspace:

not sure if
you've heard of Orphan Boy, from Manchester, but have a listen to the track Ludwig at myspace.com/orphanboyuk and see what u think. It's a bit like a Beethoven cover. just released a brilliant debut album and are one of several excellent Manchester bands being overlooked at the minute. Also recommended from Manc are the Whiskycats, Frazer King and Air Cav (not sure of the myspace addresses).
Air Cav
are at http://www.myspace.com/aircavmusic
and are most excellent : )
yes yes yes yes
air cav air cav air cav air cav
awesomeness
ok
www.myspace.com/thedisplayteam
I saw them supporting Down I Go/Bats at Cross Kings a few weeks ago. So, so entertaining live, really heavy sounding punk rock with brass.
Bird Noises
Ex-members of Black Eyes (so it was always going to be amazing). They've split up now - I think they only released one EP. But its awesome and you can download it off their myspace.

Pocahaunted and The Hospitals
I went on a visit to Rough Trade to bug the staff (again) for stuff that's like Times New Viking, and spent hours listening to suggestions. I seriously have a problem. This is what I got. Far far better than I was hoping for.
The Hospitals latest LP, Hairdryer Peace, is immense. It is the most similar of the two to Times New Viking, but that really doesn't do it justice at all. I have no idea why i'd never listened to this band before.
www.myspace.com/hospitals
I got the Pocahaunted / orphan fairytale split 7", mostly because of the artwork, it is however fantastic. I have now become completely obsessed with Pocahaunted. This is almost exactly the kind of band I want to be in. I've been trying desperately to find somewhere that has their older releases, like their cassettes, but to no avail.
If anyone knows where I can get them second hand please share. Thanks.

eBay?
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=pocahaunted&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yeh, already looked at that
Its not actually the stuff I want to find. However I think its very unlikely I'm going to find any of this.
I hate it when this happens, finding a band when most of their material is already sold out
if you like the hospitals...
you might like the band the guy's in now...they're called thee oh sees. saw them at bristol dot to dot and they were excellent...kinda noisy garage-rock (yeah i know it's not in fashion...) but with a big fuck off echoey kick to it. really good.
xx
born ruffians ain't too bad.
boris, BORIS, boris, BORIS!!!!! and Sunn O))) too
I curse my luck for not having found them (boris) years ago cause I have been craving just such a band who focuses on the things they do (the feed backey, droneish bits) plus they are innovative players who craft epic slabs of pure rawk & way-out roll . They are not for everbody but their new one "Smile" could and should put them in good stead with a much bigger audience. BORIS are hugely brilliant artists.
Sunn O))): I apply similar kudos to Sunn O))) but their music is drastically more basic, bass, base, basically. They are the La Monte Young of Rawk. Their peices are slowmoving, omnipotent behemoths of sonic pan drippings (the stuff you make gravy out of). Sunn 0))) is two people (gREg AnderSon and jOHn o'MAlley) who also head up their own record lable called Southern Lord (a nod I believe to the British producer John Loder whose legendary Southern Studio saw some heavy action back in the day). Southern Lord is also BORIS' American lable. Getting past the simplicity of Sunn O)))'s music is the hardest part of approaching and appreciating them. You'll have a tendency to say that they are frauds trying to pass off a bunch of feedback and amplified hum as music in an emperor's new clothes sort of way but don't fall into that trap- which even I (a lover of weird shit) did. I can't wait to attend one of their shows because that is what Sunn O))) is all about- really they shouldn't even bother with the albums. They wear drapery (Grimm Robes) detune their guitars to like drop B, play thru stacks of vintage Sunn amps that shake the floor all the while in clouds of stage fog and eerie light- doesn't that sound enthralling? I heard one user describe it as "bewithching"- love that.

Right, Stephen
thank you, I had deep John Loder on my mind
thanks

The Sound
and Gun Club
When my dad retires
I have an image of him learning how to play guitar, and forming a Japan cover band.
Mike Diver mentioned them in an earlier thread

poppy indie-punk would be a description that doesn't do them justice but sort of fits.
