join my band 4 or 5 Magicians on guitar for the summer!

Ok I posted this on the musicians board and got bugger all response. I'm allowed to do it here too, I've contributed thousands of posts over the years - all of which completely relevant and informative!

There must be someone out there who is free for the next two months to join up and play guitar with us? A student on summer break? Someone looking to quit their job and do something fun?

This is what we are looking for. A temporary member to play guitar with us until August 16th.

To explain the situation, basically our guitarist has to work over the summer to be able to survive. This means he can't fulfil all (to be honest, most) of the band's live commitments over the summer.

We can play the shows with a variety of people filling in for certain dates, and switching our lineup round a bit, but it would be SO much easier if we just had one stand-in guitarist for two months.

We're playing around 25 dates between July 3rd and August 16th all around Britain.

If you haven't heard us / of us, we're doing alright for ourselves right now - we have released two singles, one through Big Scary Monsters sister label Alcopop, and one through This Is Fake DIY. Both singles have received repeated airplay on Huw Stephens' and Steve Lamacq's Radio 1 shows. We have recorded a Radio 1 Session for Huw Stephens and were recently interviewed by Lamacq as his 'new favourite band' as well as being his single of the week. We have another single out through Fake DIY in August, and two EPs (a sort of quasi-album) in October.

We are an alt-rock band in the vein of Dinosaur Jr, Guided By Voices, Nirvana, REM, Pavement, Built To Spill, Sebadoh, Weezer etc. etc.

Alternatively, if you are a bass player, and are reading this wishing it was a bass player we were advertising for, there is an option of shifting our bass player to guitar and bringing you in to play bass, so get in touch if this is the case too.

Also, although we only need a temporary member, there is definitely scope for making things permanent should you wish to join and rehearsals / shows go well!

Have a listen at and a read of www.myspace.com/4or5magicians and get in touch there.

Or email fourorfivemagicians[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk if you are interested. Even if you can't do all the dates, I'd still like to hear from you if you are interested in doing this.

Thanks,

Dan x

more information

- we are based in Brighton, but I guess this is immaterial if you are only joining temporarily. We will be based in south London from September if you are thinking of joining permanently.

- we'll be on tour for a lot of the period, staying at friends and promoters houses, but if you need somewhere to stay in between travelling, you can stay at one of our houses.

- all your food will be paid for on days we have shows.

Any other questions, just fire away!

I can play power chords

Will that do? I also only own an acoustic guitar. Will that do?

no

no it won't.

Muso

I have an electric and an acoustic and I can play major AND minor chords. I do tend to get carried away and hammer at my strings like I'm playing a percussion instrument of some kind (which can be annoying, I'm told, during ballads).

Will that do?

that's how I play guitar

so that would be ok. I fear this is probably just a social reply though and you have absolutely no interest in getting involved.

Are you the teacher guy that did the thing with the kids and the myspace bands? That was cool!

Well thanks very much

It what sadly shortlived unfortunately :( The management didn't like the idea of the kids 'being in contact with rock stars on the internet' (a scary combination) which is how they interpreted my lessons and they pulled the plug.

Anyway yeah... sorry. I'll be teaching until the end of July and then (much as I would LOVE to spend the summer on stage strumming away to your brand of indie goodness) I think my wife and children might feel somewhat abandoned. Sorry.
Still, don't knock the flippant replies, they keep bumping this thread for you until the right person spots it :)

I suppose I could learn a fourth chord

and join you. I only eat grapes and plain pringles. Get that shit on the rider now. SEE YOU AT THE ROCKSHOW \m/

this is a funny reply

but essentially unhelpful.

Sorry, Dan, that's my schtick

I did listen to your band once though. Best of luck.

my schtick

is assessing the comic value of posts, then their relevance to the thread.

We've all seen your schtick

Changed them ripped shorts yet? ;)

yes

i'm currently wearing official Arsenal tracksuit bottoms my dad found in lost property at the school he taught at when I was 8. Ultimate loungewear. I never grew much.

as zapsta deems he can be irrelevant

I may as well be too.
Great band! Good luck in finding someone.

thanks!

Is it a rhythm or lead guitarist you're looking for?

You might have said that in your original post. I don't know. It's too long.

it switches between the two

we aren't the rolling stones or anything.

It is mainly "lead" though. In the sense that you would be doing more picking than me. And a couple of solos. But I play some of the lead stuff.

Or something.

Oh

Fuck that shit then. But good luck!

do people still make this distinction anymore?

I thought that went out with Thousand Yard Stare.

Yes

but I think they generally call it "shit guitarist" and "good guitarist" now.

yes

we are looking for a "good guitarist"!

hi

i could totally be your man on the ukulele/melodica/guitar

but i have high hopes for my solo outfit. i am "rape-shit experience", straight up gangsta-folk yo.

actually that's a point

if you can do backing vocals too, that would be ideal.

Hopefully this thread will not turn into that one.

ooooh spooky

my pod has just thrown up 'Your Fictious Character' whilst on shuffle. Psychic pod.

Tune by the way.

Geez, I canna believe you can't find a guitarist

willing to join a good band...here of all places! I have too many gray hairs and live 8000 miles from London (and a little farther from Brighton) to be of any help personally, but good luck with everything.

Maybe you'll have better luck at nme.com (meh!)

I'd offer, being a pretty decent guitarist and stuff...

But I hate touring - which is why I'm doing solo stuff now - so I don't have to if I don't want to.

If I was still into the band thing though you'd be rejecting me already.

I'd love to do this

shame I'm nowhere near Brighton. Good luck though man!

i can play guitar

reasonably well, i can also play bass, i also divide my time between Brighton and South East London. get in touch.

check PMs!

hi dan

i'll only join if you play those nirvana covers again.

[i can only play nirvana songs, and i play those badly].

grandma take me home

grandma take me home
grandma take me home
grandma take me home

Officially the only time we've ever done a Nirvana song. Unless we did it at another gig as well. I was drinking a lot at the time.

or did we do been a son?

or both?

when was this?

catch in shoreditch

a long time ago. January 2007?

U TOTES DID 2

BEST 2 SONGS OF MY LIFE

sadly i am abroad all summer.

and i'm not really very good at playing the guitar. good luck though.

we definitely did Sliver

but i don't think we did Been A Son.

We played with you

at the purple turtle and I'm sure you covered Son of Gun, It may have been Sliver!

We did agree your drummer looks like a serial killer!

I don't know about you,

But I was that drummer, and I'm taking that as a compliment.

I was at that Purple Turtle gig

you definitely covered 'Been A Son' - I remember it sounding really tight.

i could do it easilly

if i didn't have work. what's in it for me?

the fact you are joining such an awesome band?

and the fact you get to quit your job?

i would love to do this

but sadly im miles away. ill come and see you when you play norwich though. for sure.

bad excuse!

From above :

"we'll be on tour for a lot of the period, staying at friends and promoters houses, but if you need somewhere to stay in between travelling, you can stay at one of our houses".

Think of it like backpacking round Europe. But it isn't Europe, it's the UK, and you're in a van and staying in houses and getting free beer and meals.

you better!

there's still a support to be booked on that one too.

ill do it

i dont have any songs though.

edward teeem ftw

www.myspace.com/edwardteeem

(i dont expect you to seriously consider having us)

I'd love to.

If I had the time.
And the energy.
And the ability to actually play guitar well enough.

Sorry.

How comes you don't have to work Dan?

How do you survive?

my grandad died late last year

and left me a small amount of money. This, twinned with economical budgeting, has allowed me to focus on the band since, and avoid having to work. However, this has now run out. I am living with my parents until the tour starts and eating their food. I will then be on tour for nearly two months, and will be self sufficient. When the tour is over I plan to sell all my unessential belongings on ebay. Then sign on the dole.

It's a shame I don't get any money for being in a band. Maybe in the future this will change.

i'm kind of interested

will let you know re: my employment situation

you should so do it

can you actually play guitar to our incredibly high standard?

QUIT YOUR JOB
QUIT YOUR JOB

JAG

This is a good Jag - I've now check your myspace out. You should get to Manchester on your tour.

we would if anyone would put us on there!

Manchester is top of the league, by far, of people who have said they will put us on, but actually haven't ended up doing it. I'd say it's about four promotion teams, two individuals, one band, and one festival.

One day we will make it.

Well

I'm not the right person to ask, sorry!

i'd love to play

fuzzed up late 80's/early 90's riffz with you guys

but I HAVE A JOB NOW

and a girlfriend, and a flat

i say i'd love to, but

i've never actually listened to your band, so how would i know

totally

plus i live in leeds. pretty much other end of the country, and I DONT LIKE SOUTHERNERS

i was going to be nice to you

but do you know what, im not going to be now!

people should have fewer responsibilities

Come on people of the world. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

I'm putting you guys on on the tour

so i have responsibilities too. But i'm still tempted.

hmmm

Id do it, im a pretty good rythem guitarist and can do a little bit of lead... but I need money to save for uni in Epsom in september, and being on tour for the summer would earn me fuck all... i dunno, it'd be fun.

haha

im sure it would man, but like i said in the post before, im way more of a rythem player... so i don't think im what your looking for really.

position filled!
