Don't you love turning people on to music? I thought this would be a great reference thread to help us broaden our horizons in the coming months (years). Just pick twenty to fifty from your library- if you can't do twenty; do ten or five or one.

Both versions of Smile?
Are they really that different?
yeah i've only heard the Japanese version...
?
I had the Southern Lord mix first
then Japan import. I have been listening to nothing but the Japan import but the Southern Lord mix is awsome- more RAWK, more continuous a better, cooler flow. The songs all have different titles and the track list is a different sequence till the last three- get them both; the differences are definitely worth having in toto.
Is that the best place to start with The Residents?
You might want to start with the 25th anniversery compilation on rhino
Mark Of The Mole is great though. Ther Residents made four "Mole" records:
Mark Of The Mole
Tunes Of Two Cities
The Mole Show
The Big Bubble
The basic story is about the lives of two races; The Moles and The Chubs. The Moles live underground. They live to work and work to live until one day a storm or conflagration of some sort forces them to abandon their home and mass migrate to the chub region by the sea where they are exploited by the chubs. Mark Of The Mole is theatrical music which documents the basic story, The Tunes Of Two Cities is a compilation of indigenous music of the two cultures- Moles and Chubs. The Mole Show is a live album of the European Mole Tour which has an added dramatic element of the conflicts which take place on the tour between The Residents and Penn Gilette (who the Residents hired to narrate the stage production but Penn tries to steal the show. The Big Bubble is a an album of the band The Big Bubble who are the children of mixed marriages of Moles and Chubs- The Residents created a whole language for The Big Bubble. There is also "Intermission" which is an album of the intermission music The Residents made for The Mole Show.

I own three of those.
I am not worthy to walk these boards.
Are they 'The Fugees', 'Battles' and 'Dizzee Rascal'?
Dizzee, NIN and Mogwai
I've never even heard of The Sound of Animals Fighting - Tiger + The Duke.
I haven't got any of them
I wondering if my record collection has been nicked or something.
Along with an apostrophe and an 'm'
tsoaf
terrible album, amazing band
most of rx bandits,
craig from Chiodos
and Anthony from Circa Survive
dual singing.
Lover, The Lord Has Left Us is terrible,
Tiger + The Duke is not
I can't believe no-one has picked up on
the contraversial choice of Dillinger Escape Plan album. Nothing gets people riled up on here like a good bit of old DEP / new DEP aggro
i was considering this choice
but i decided to go with the stance that it's DEP, and i love all their albums.

There are but 3 that are rock solid essentials for everyone:
Circle takes the Square: 'As the roots Undo'
Slint 'Spiderland'
Neutral Milk Hotel 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea'
Three stone cold classics. NMH haterz please respond below...*
(*actually, don't).
2
albums every DiS user should
own, including Panic At The Disco's 'Pretty. Odd' and Wolfmother.
pretty odd is actually a great fun summer album
and nothing like their debut
I know
I've heard it. It's hardly essential though
hmmm
it's a bases covered album though. what other album of it's ilk would you put there? (granted there are tonnes, but what in particular?)
I have to choose a modern pop-punk-emo
album to put at the top of the list of essential albums for DiS users? err. Brand New - Deja Entendu probably.
anyway
I was only picking on that album as it was number 1 on someone's list. I could have picked on 50% of meandthatarmy's selection as not being remotely essential listening for anyone, never mind DiS users. Kate Nash?
It's essential listening for ME.
And I'm asking people to listen to music they might not already listen to, just like everybody else.
Do I deserve more criticism just because some of the music I like is popular?
sorry, no
probably not, each to their own and all that.
i can't get into Slint or NMH...oh, how i've tried, but i fear it's a dead end
i agree, slint bore me :(
Fair enough.
I think they're both records it's good to have an opinion on though, whatever that opinion might be.
Listen to them in the dark
i'll try sometime
though i don't listen to a lot of albums in the dark these days, and there are quite a few that i need to before slint
ooh I can feel a thread coming on...
Watch it sink unloved and unappreciated just over there ----->

3. Lifetime - Hello Bastards
4. Dinosaur Jr. - Your Living All Over Me

8. Stooges - Raw Power
9. Desaparecidos - Read Music Speak Spanish
10. REM - I.R.S. Years (Comp)
Now it's my turn to be the 'I don't get your love for x' guy
I don't get the love for 'Meadowlands' by the Wrens. It has perfectly competent songcrafting etc but nothing that's made it stand out to me or make me want to replay it much (with the exception of 'she sends kisses' which is nice enought).
What am I missing?
Expect a lot of 'have you seen them live?' comments here.
*pre-emtive strike*
I don't care how good they are live. I don't care if there is a laser light show and a naked mosh pit. Why should I think this record is in any way special?

Bear in mind
These aren't necessarily my favourites, just albums that I think are essential in terms of their roles played in pushing boundaries within pop music. Also I think a good album will generally have universal appeal and can be recognised as 'good' by all listeners, therefore transcending any kind of genre. If it was a favourites list it would've been full of bloody Steely Dan and you'd have all got right shirty!

I do not care for 99% of this music
Greatest Hip Hop album ever IMO, due to it's lyrics being NOT about drugs/sex/being black/ghetto/riches/cars/clothing
AESOP ROCK - Labor Days
An amazing album by crazy art/indie/experimental band BSS
BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE - S/T
Absolutely amazing indie/hardcore. Marc Paffi is literally an artistic genius, you will not have heard anything like it.

simply because
THE BEATLES - Magical Mystery Tour
