so, i always used to hate Neil Young because my dad forced me to listen to him and i hated his voice, but I'm listening to a mix cd i got a while ago with 'Old Man' on it, and it's absolutely brilliant. I've also got "Needle and the Damage Done' on another CD, which is really really good.
i'd ask my dad, but he'd just be really smug, so what albums should i go for?
And to stop this turning into a selfish thread, who loves Neil Young? What's your favourite Neil Young song? Yay Neil Young? Boo Neil Young? Neil Young!

I'd just work my way through from 1968 - 78
You can't really go wrong with any album he put out between these years. Have a look on allmusic.com and just work up the years.
both those tracks are from Harvest ...
which is a pretty good album to start with ... you can't really go wrong with any of his 70s stuff but I'd also particularly recommend After The Goldrush, Tonight's The Night and On The Beach (all available from Amazon for less than a fiver) ... Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Zuma are great too
I love both the songs you mention but fave is probably either Albequerque or Love In Mind ... (and Ordinary People from his last album is fantastic)
Neil Young!
I first got into him through me dads copy of "Decade" which is a 2 disk retrospective of the 68-78 stuff more or less, pretty much 100% solid gold hits, then you can work out where to go from there, cos he covers alot of ground really, from pretty delicate folk stuff to balls out guitar devastation. IMO "On the Beach" is his best album. The later stuff is actually alright too. The benefit of his retarded castrato barn-falling-down voice is that time has not wearied it
Young Neil!
"Rust Never Sleeps" was the first Neil Young album I bought and its just as good a place to start as almost anywhere. Its loud and loose and before long you'll be singing it wherever you go. And it has 'Powderfinger' on it, which is just about the best song ever written.
^ this man knows the score
this is what i did. then i bought decade and then i went on from there. neil young is amazing, i cant wait to see him at hop farm
^5
Seeing him at Hammersmith Apollo was a dream come true (sneaking in made it about 1045% more exciting) and he still completely owns
Powderfinger
is fucking awesome. There's just something so tremendous about the guitar riff between verses.
I love Neil Young
my favorite song????
Walk On or Cowgirl in the Sand
neil young = practically god
try after the gold rush
or live rust
I really don't like Live Rust.
I don't know why, but it's never clicked with me.
neil young
is so super amazing I creamed in my pants just from seeing his name as a thread.
If you're into the Old Man type stuff then get Harvest, which was his big breakthrough and is FLAWLESS. When I take over the world it will be punishable by death to say anything bad about that record. I love Don't Let It Bring You Down from After The Goldrush too, despite the fact that that is apparently Elton John's favourite ever album...
Saw him at Manchester Apollo a few months ago. He did an acoustic set and then came back for the full on wind-machines-and-godfather-of-grunge stuff. Bliss. Speaking of which, there's a live collaboration between him and Pearl Jam kicking around the net somewhere - they do Keep On Rockin In The Free World, although I always preferred the acoustic version of that tune from the Freedom album. Thoughts?
He did the Mirrorball album with Pearl Jam.
yeah Mirrorball
was with pearl jam. Throw your hatred down and I'm the ocean are two of the best on it and they really rock hard. I also like Re-Ac-Tor which never seems to get mentioned, anyone else like it?
there's a neil young thread about once a week on DiS so that should keep you happy. you'll find me there
oh yeah
and the definitive rockin in the free world was a tv performance on SNL, its an awesome video but i cant seem to find it on youtube, its around the internet somewhere if you look hard enough.
love neil.
for albums my favorite is on the beach. last year's release of the 1971 massey hall concert is superb. just him acoustic and his voice is in top form. he debuts or plays for one of the first times a bunch of songs from harvest that he had just written like old man, heart of gold, etc.
the BBC session he did in 1971 was amazing
its all on youtube of course, heres one of them
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU9_Q7PJuNQ
Love Neil also
Zuma probably comes out top out of the albums i own.
That session's great.
They occasionally show it on BBC4. It's tagged onto the end of my bootleg copy of On The Beach, which is quite cool.
Neil Young is my all-time number 1 super-awesome favourite musician.
Start with Landing on Water. Ignore what these jokers have said. Landing on Water is where it's at.
ONLY JOKING!
all of the following albums are awesome:
Harvest
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
On the Beach
Tonight's the Night
Zuma
Rust Never Sleeps
American Stars 'n Bars
also, make sure you get the two recent live albums:
Live at Massey Hall
Live at the Fillmore East (best crazy horse period EVER. danny whitten is tearing the shit up. incredible performance. GET THIS GET THIS GET THIS)
Also worth a punt:
After the Goldrush
MTV Unplugged
Comes a Time
Chrome Dreams (original bootleg, find it on the internet)
Harvest Moon
Avoid:
Landing on Water
Are You Passionate
Trans
blah
oh god, and did i mention
that On the Beach is a MUST-HAVE, if only for The Greatest Song Ever Written(tm) - Ambulance Blues.
Trans is alright.
Landing On Water is terrible though. I tried listening to it again recently. i can't get through it (although Hippie Dream is a guilty pleasure).
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Is my favourite album. The perfect mix of his folk and rock personas, then maybe Rust Never Sleeps or On The Beach.
Favourite song is either Powderfinger, Walk On or Birds.
I nearly bought American Stars and Bars today, mainly because it's got Like a Hurricane on it (though I have that track already). Is it any good?
YES YES
the whole album sounds perfect. Saddle up the palomino...MMM...
get it.
Of his recent albums
I thought Prarie Wind and Living With War were pretty darn good although the lyrics of Living With War are already dated and it contains a lot of borrowed tunes.
Haven't really got into Chrome Dreams yet (apart from Ordinary People which I've played to death).
concur
with most of the above, although i dislike the jack nitzsche orchestrated stuff on harvest (ergh). favourites are On The Beach, After the Goldrush and new purchases Massey Hall and Fillmore East (this one especially is awesome, won't be listening to the studio versions of those songs much again). does anyone fancy and old fashioned swap of NY bootlegs (ie- cds in the post?) i have:
1- "Neil Young Rarities" (20 tracks includes non lp version of mr soul; original mixes of 4 songs off debut; alternate version of campaigner with extra verse; War Song, non lp '72 single with graham nash; bside alternate version of Birds; don't spook the horse, bside; great live version of this notes for you)
2- Lucky 17 (17 tracks, incl alt version of everybody knows...; solo acoustic versions of country girl and everybodys alone; electric version of bad fog...; traces, tonights the night outtake; interstate, bside; mansion on the hill, rehearsal; box car, original '89 version).
3- chrome dreams I (15, includes acoustic powderfinger; and will to love)
4- live at the bottom line, nyc 74 (solo acoustic on the beach stuff, seminal gig but a rough recording)
1-3 are excellent recordings, mostly studio outtakes, bsides or radio recordings.
anyone
?
I don't have any bootlegs to swap really.
The only ones I've got copies of are Chrome Dreams, live at the Rainbow (Tonight's The Night era, pretty terrible sound quality) and Hammersmith Apollo 15/3/08. The Hammersmith show was the one I went to, so it's got a curiosity value for me, but it's by no means a classic set. I can't remember where I got these.
I know there are a couple of groups online that swap bootlegs, maybe try those?
Birds
sends shivers down my spine every time.
"When you see me fly away without yoooouuu..."
I agree
with much of what has been said in this thread, Miss v.
To summarise:
1. Young is a fucking hero;
2. Decade is probably the best place to start; and
3. if you love Decade then the other essential records are Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After the Goldrush, Tonight's the Night, On the Beach and Rust Never Sleeps.
She sees the light.
And she is praised.
Harvest and After The Goldrush.
On the beach is great
Ambulance Blues is my favourite song of his. Perfect sunday song actually, I might give it a listen now...
I am to see this man at werchter
along with REM sigur ros and radiohead.
:D:D:D:D
he definitely doesn't sound a bit like kermit
and is a god. Harvest for me is the best album, but pretty much everything he's done is worth a listen. Cant believe no-one has mentioned "Words between the lines of age" or "Cortez the Killer".....
Never really understood his appeal
But I love country music and country rock. So why do I find him such a nasally whiney dullard?
When I like Stephen Stills & David Crosby's albums without him?
WHY??? What am I missing? It upsets me.
ON THE BEACH!!!!!
get 'on the beach', seriously one of the best albums i own, makes me all warm and lethargic when i listen to it.
yeah fuck, i'm gonna put it on now
Practically everything
I've heard has been incredible. Nobody can touch Neil on his range of emotion and sincerityon his records. Tonight's the Night, After the Goldrush and On the Beach being my personal favourites. Songs like Tired Eyes, Lookout Joe, On the Beach, For the Turnstyles...in fact pretty much everything is amazing.
I was waiting for a thread on Neil Young so I could just express my pure adoration :D
in fact
get Live at Massey Hall. Just about the best live performance ever with awesome banter in between songs that really makes you feel like he's adressing you personally. Contains tonnes of his best songs and the recording quality is super fantastic for the 70's
HOP FARM
I'm so sorry to crash this party with tickets but have to go to a wedding the day before the Hop Farm now so won't make it. Am selling 4 tickets below face value so if anyone needs give me a shout
He made me cry at Hammersmith
