i think i did this thread about a year ago. Can we all be sensible now and admit they're amazing?
Brian may is/was an excellent guitarist, freddy mercury was a phenomenal songwriter, vocalist and above all frontman. They were bombastic and camp and brilliant. I find the use of "dont stop me now" as a "cheesy" disco hit has warped people's perception of them from a fun camp band with anthems and actual proper good songwriting to a "cheesy omg" kind of band.

...

Their albums contain staggering amounts of filler - but they are more than offset by their solid gold hits.

Deacon is a deceptively brilliant bassist also.

Thankyou for the sensible response

Last time it was all "Urgh queen, guitar solos, songs about being happy, urgh!"

I recently bought Sheer Heart Attack

Once you get used to the bombast and campness it's fantastic. Plus Killer Queen is one of the best written concise pop songs ever. The guitar solo is probably my alltime favourite. It still sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it.

YES!

Brilliant solo.

John Deacon wrote "You're My Best Friend" too

Which is an amazing track

And Another one bites..

..the dust and I want to break free and my personal fave (with another neat guitar solo at the end), this anthem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR1pUIG_IaA

Plus...

He's got the sense not to be the money-grabbing post-Freddie era

I still really dislike Bohemian Rahpsody and Radio gaga with a passion

but I have a soft spot for killer queen.

I dont know much else by them mind

How can you hate bohemian rhapsody?

please don't say "because it's overplayed", because it's not.

sensible ?

me ?
NEVER !

I do think on the whole though

80's Queen was pretty awful. Then again I can forgive them because everyone became awful in the 80's

and Prince

and Michael Jackson

smiths

joy division
a million other bands

I disagree with Aerosmith

prince, michael jackson, joy division; probably a million other bands. I'd happy erase that decade if I wasn't born during it.

METALLICA

you clearly know nothing about music

THE POLICE as well

jesus man are you mad?...they were excellent.

Yeah, I became pretty awful in the 80s.

Balls dropped, acne appeared, wanking started.

Yeah there's

loads of crap on their albums. The odd gem...mostly a singles band. I guess every home should have the Greatest Hits.

I cannot stand queen, and if I never heard them again I would be very happy.

I am not musically dead and I can appreciate 'camp cheesy' music when I want to.
Personally I cannot stand the noise that Brian May gets from his guitar, yes the bass playing is good but not great and the drumming is fine. Mercury had a great voice and was no doubt a great frontman but that does not change the fact that I cannot stand their music!
I rank them up there with abba of band I fucking despise!

His guitar tone was one of the most amazing things ever

i'm still amazed by his playing. He's a total nerd about guitar playing which is pretty crap for your rockstar cred but if you want to know how to play diminshed blah blah 7th scales, he's your man.

it's not to be liked because it's 'camp cheesy'

it's to be liked because it's extraordinarily ambitious and brilliantly achieved music with a big fat heart. Irony is pop death.

I don't object to camp

camp is good, "cheesy" isn't. But yeah, what you said.

I only mentioned camp cheesy because others.....

had referred to them as such and my pint there was that if it comes down to camp cheesy then thats not why I dislike them.
I also don't fall into the 'indier than thou' bracket!
Can someone not air their dislike for a band without being tagged as something else.
I love Bob Dylans music but if somebody came on and slated Dylan then fine, but I wouldn't pidgeon hole them as some anti folk queen loving idiot!
Queens music makes my skin crawl and if I never heard them again I would be quite happy, just my opinion though.

...

Bass playing good but not great? This comment is pretty n00bish.

And Brian May = Tone. So STFU on that, also.

queen are mega

they went rubbish as soon as freddie decided to grow a moustache (i.e. hot space era) but their first few albums are really good. queen II is especially underrated.

I sway between two positions on Queen, and can never quite decide where to sit.

1. Best singles band that ever lived, one of those OH MATE THEY'RE PLAYING A QUEEN SONG ON THE RADIO!!! things, with a back catalogue of songs that can go up against anyones and win hands down. Despite overplaying, you can't deny Bohemian Rhapsody's place in the pantheon of brilliant rock performances, and trying to resist clapping along to Radio Gaga is actually pointless.

2. Childish playground rock that has the capacity to annoy me at every turn. Oh, you want to ride your bicycle? Good one. You're my best friend? Good one. Ending a song with the words 'fried chicken'? Good one.

Conclusion: Seven Seas Of Rhye is one of the most underrated singles ever, and the bit where he says 'Hey boys!' in Good Old Fashioned Loverboy is ace. Roger Taylor is the most annoying man in history.

Today, I like them. This may all change tomorrow.

Surely catchy singles epitomise these sort of simple silly catchy lines?

Look at all the great early beatles songs.

Sometimes they vex me though.

I get easily vexed.

that's understandable

and Roger Taylor is awful! I don't like his voice, drumming or attitude.

deary deary me

you are now demonstrating a complete lack of musical theory.

There is no denying....

the brilliance of bohemian rhapsody, but there it ends for me.
In fairness I have been put off them more by anytime I have read or heard an interview with Roger Taylor or Brian May.
They are like a gimmick band, their music doesn't stand up well against any of their peers!

Sometimes I think there needs to be a 'best of bamos' blog.

This post would be in it. It pretty much sums up what I would say about Queen, except I probably wouldn't be as raptuous about their 'highs' or as annoyed about their 'lows'.

But yeah: amazing musicians or not, their music just isn't something that I can really get my teeth into.

I owned Hot Space in the 80s and loved it, though.

I can't stand Queen.

although it might have something to do with my dad playing them regularly throughout my childhood.

I recognise the great showmanship and the bombast but I can count the number of songs I like on maybe three fingers. I can understand why people like them but it just doesn't work for me.

I'm surprised.

You're normally into things like this a lot more.

I FUCKING LOVE THEM!!!!

honestly,

A night at the opera is one of my all time fav albums.

I like rogers taylor singing voice too...i think brian mays a bit of a tool... though it has to be said the hairy git can shred

^^^^Yip!

I am, I'm sorry

it's probably a very unappealing trait! I apologise.

and I would accept that most of their albums are pretty awful in the main

but the two Greatest Hits albums are both brilliant.

not at all. I am a Bob Dylan nazi!

I don't want to argue with folk unless they are uncompromising nazi bastards.

Oh, I'm also a Bob Dylan nazi

and a Talking Heads nazi, and a Prince nazi, and rapidly becoming a Scott Walker nazi.

Hope there's no musical Nuremburg.

a tiny pervy god

I've been enjoying 'Parade' a lot lately.

My sister had a spare ticket for him when he played Glasgow...

about 15 years ago and she took me, I didn't know much about him at the time but he was fucking amazing. Great guitar player.

^^^I believe it was something that Kurt Russell traded for...

a bad attitude, fucking great boots and the ability to appear in some of the greatest films ever committed to celluloid!

soul

is the ring around your bathtub!

haha yeah

i mean seriously. just enjoy it. GET WIT DA CAMP.

somebody to love is fantastic. It's really not difficult.

Fat Bottomed Girls

is the bollocks.

queen

are amazing

innuedo credits the wandering minstrel guitar.... that solo!!!
"be free with your tempo be free be free!

surrender your ego be free be free to yourseeeeeelllffff!!!

and im going slightly mad!!

I use to love them when I was a kid

but I wouldn't listen to them now on purpose, as they are pretty annoying now-a-days, the songs make me cringe.

have recentlt

let go of the part of me that doesn't like queen and fully surrendered myself to The Hits

queen is great!

go for it live!

it's pretty funny with alot of people

who hate Queen. "What lps you heard?" "err Greatest hits 1 & 2".

My god go buy 'news of the world' or 'The Game'. Dragon attack seriously rocks.

It's just great songwriting wrapped up in that era's pomp.

Right I've had a think about it,

and the list of dreadful features of Queen is too long.

1 - They were called 'Queen'

2 - Brian May was in them

3 - They are now touring under the same name, minus the frontman

4 - They dressed up as women at any given opportunity

5 - Not only did they do straight-up disco and straight-up cock, they also went 'epic' towards the end

6 - There is a very good reason they aren't ever even mentioned or considered by music historians as one of the seriously important icons of popular music - and unfortunately, its because of the things mentioned above

7 - Its far too easy to be snobbish towards them. Unfortunately, they ARE music for the absolute masses. See also: Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, etc.

I have also met numerous people

who claim to love them.

"Favourite Queen record?"

"Greatest hits 1."

wrightylew for Prime Minister!

I'll vote for you anyway!

well

1 - I can persuade myself that most band names are good or bad really

2 - Noel Gallagher was in Oasis who you seem to rate judging by your user page

3 - this is pretty terrible but it doesn't have much to do with their old music

4 - again not much to do with their music

5 - Led zepp stuff can be pretty "straight-up cock"

6 - who judges what they want to listen to based on music historians? I wouldn't judge my happiest memories based on the fact that they were worth chronicling for the generations

7 - See Oasis, Led Zep, Kasabian

ineffective response

youve not answered the criticisms, youve just said yeah, well you like oasis and i think theyre shit!

I was trying to get the chap to see

that alot of musicians can be annoying, primarily because they are human. point 3 and 4 were answered or considered irrelevent as to why people like the music. I don't see what they have in common with Bryan Adams or Bon Jovi other than that they have sold alot of records. Ergo the Beatles = Shania Twain?

And if music critics don't rate them as influential or serious I very much doubt it has anything to do with them wearing womens clothing in a music video, their band name, or Brian May as a human being.

And whether I like Oasis or not has nothing to do with whether Noel is a tool. As it happens I do like some Oasis songs.

Stop being intentionally fucking stupid.

"I don't see what they have in common with Bryan Adams or Bon Jovi other than that they have sold alot of records. Ergo the Beatles = Shania Twain?"

And please. Don't ever dare bring The Beatles into a thread about Queen. Ever again.

Its like wearing a beautiful new expensive wedding dress to go and have a shit in some grotty public toilets, with sinister graffiti lining the walls.

Stop being intentionally fucking stupid?

"Its like wearing a beautiful new expensive wedding dress to go and have a shit in some grotty public toilets, with sinister graffiti lining the walls."

That's not a point that's just somebody whinging because they have run out of things to say.

Please take a deep breath and tell me again why music for the masses is always a bad thing.

WRONG

There is a very good reason they aren't ever even mentioned or considered by music historians as one of the seriously important icons of popular music - and unfortunately, its because of the things mentioned above

THEY ARE.

Imagine

that you haven't heard Bohemian Rhapsody 13432543254 times.

It's a bit crazy to think that it got to number one. It's all long and dramatic and ridiculous! Scaramoosh scaramoosh.

Queen were great but they did go rapidly downhill. As do most bands after ten years or so.

Early Queen is exceptionally good. Personally I have more time for early Queen than I do for Led Zep.

There I've said it.

^^^^^speechless

I have never ever written the word speechless before.

I

just love them.

I am just back from lunch wher I said not a word to anyone.....

I have phonecalls to make but I cannot, work colleagues are asking me questions that I cannot answer because I am still speechless!

they composed 2 of the best soundtracks

to 2 of the best films ever (in my opinion)

Name another band who could pull that off?
