Worlds End Girlfriend

after seeing him at ATP i managed to purchase a collection of all the albums he has released, and about half way through listening to them i'm wondering; why isnt he recognised as a genius?
the earliest release i have is from 2001, and it doesnt sound a day old, some sort of mix of Jaga Jazzist, M83, Mono, Squarepusher, 65Days Of Static, video game music and Henryk Gorecki. insanely adventurous, yet hugely listenable.
i dont think there has been a mention of him on the music forum (at least one that i have seen). this topic deserves >1000 replies.

  • Yep. AMAZING.

Have you heard his split with mono? I maintain that it should be recognised as one of the great pieces of modern classical music.

    overwhelmingly depressing.

    • yes, it is wonderful, especially the last piece.

i think i have everything he has done...maybe somethings he hasnt done too, it was a mighty package.

    • I have only heard

Hertbreak Wonderland, he was amazing at ATP, loved the drummer!

      • you should definately get

The Lie Lay Land, two of the songs from his set at ATP where from the album, and my favourite track of his 'We Are The Massacre' is on it too

        • I LOVE HIM.

          He's far too wonderful...

          • indeed

have you gotten his CDs? they are all FABOLOUS.

i wanted to run into him at ATP so i could say "arigato Katsuhiko-san", and run away if he started speaking japenese to me.

            • wow

there is some horrendous spelling in that post

  • Where did you get it all from?

I was struggling to find anyone who has anything but the Mono collaboration in stock...

    • ebay

      it cost quite a bit..

      • Would you be massively against doing me some copies

if I covered all the costs?

        • (I was also blown away by him at ATP)

        • you can get hurtbreak wonderland

          quite easily.
i can put you everything else onto a dataCD in exchance for a mixCD i guess.

          • :)

I'll definitely do that for you, is that a deal?

            • well im not looking to create any legal intentions

PM me your address, i will do it up when i have the time (wednesday probably)

          • It's all on HMV Japan.

though I have no idea how much 2000 Yen is in real money.

            • real money is

British money then i take it?

              • obviously

I've just ordered a couple of albums, cost me just over 20 quid so I'm happy enough.

            • It's about £10

Take off two zeros and divide by two. I saw WEG while out there but can't remember much mainly because they were the first band on and were later followed by Mono and EitS.

  • You're right

He was astoundingly good at ATP. I've got Hurtbreak Wonderland. Not you've inspired me to track down the best. Mono were fab as well. I'm starting to regret having missed Envy.

    • yep, been a fan for a long time

I was gutted to miss him at ATP

      • do you mean

you went, but didnt see him?

        • Didn't he have the very first slot of the whole

thing? And maybe Envy had the last (or possibly the Field - but although I missed Envy because I was too knackered, I can't really see what all the fuss is about for the Field).

          • no

WEG was the first on saturday. Constantines were the first overall.
Think Envy and The Field were joint last.

            • You're right..

I remember now. My memory of the weekend is a little hazy, for some reason.

              • i still cant remember any of friday evening/night

                <half a litre of vodka/two cans of relentless/possibly spiking centric>

        • Nope, I couldn't afford to go

    • !

Envy were out of this world. i was a bit let down by Mono though.

  • Its just one guy?

    Yowza, wouldnt have though tthat!

    • well live

he sometimes plays with a drummer.
i dunno, listening to Hurtbreak Wonderland im not sure how it could be a collaborative effort. there is too much...directional chaos.

      • Sorry mate

but we'll have to agree to disagree with WEG.
Adored his set at ATP, but on record I just don't get it at all. Apologies an all that...

        • haha, what?

wheres your usual vitriol man? 'agree to disagree','apologies'.

what have you heard by him?

          • Hurtbreak Wonderland

I cheekily downloaded it onto the iPod. Nothing grabbed me so I gave Farewell Kingdom a go. Same thing there.

            • fair enough

if hurtbreak wonderland doesnt grab you i dont think anything else will.

  • I was lucky enough to find the

collab with mono on vinyl. It is superb (puts other mono efforts well into the shade) and the 2LPs of heavy weight vinyl are brillaintly packaged.

So... I've been very keen to find some WEG recording and so far totally failed. Anyone got any bright ideas how I can get hold of any of his stuff without shelling out 50 quid on an import?

    • you cant

unless you spend over that on a bundle on Ebay, like i did.

you can get hurtbreak wonderland from amazon

      • i watched them with you

+ dom i recall, my head was banging that morning.

Did enjoy it though and have hurtbreak wonderland on my amazon wishlist

        • it was immense

i think you will have to buy it used, they never seem to have stock in.

    • I asked about this a couple months back

and a helpful sort replied that she ran a website
      http://www.rhythmonline.co.uk/
that had some damn good imports, they have a couple of his albums

      • wow

        some good stuff there

      • that is a superb website

bang goes my bank balance. Sorry kids - no dinner tonight....

  • He is a bit genius,

lots of really good Japanese musicians making a similar sort of 'modern composition.

    Kashiwa Daisuke
    Yasushi Yoshida
    Haruka Nakamura
    Akira Kosemura

All worht checking out if you like Worlds End Girlfriend, especially Daisuke, his music blows away anything else. http://www.myspace.com/kashiwadaisuke

    • sounds good

but i think i prefer WEG

    • ^This

Program Music I by Kashiwa Daisuke is stunning, the first track especially. My favourite album of last year.

I've not heard anything by the other three you mention though, any suggestions of where to start?

      • Yasushi Yoshida

bit more laid back than Kashiwa, but still glithces things up a bit when needed.

Akira Kosemura and Haruka Nakamura did a split record last year, that's well worth checking out for a good base.

Heard about them all from The Silent Ballet, so it might be worth checking out there for reviews etc.

        • Yasushi Yoshida

is lovely. Am listening to his new second album right now. It sounds as great as hist first album.

Kashiwa Daisuke is someone on my to-get list, sounds promising. Not heard the other two.

  • his name reminds me

    of the Worlds End Murders

    • in Scotland you mean?

      i think they are unrelated

  • can i just suggest

    Cornelius?

    he's amazing.

    • but he is

      < Worlds End Girlfriend.
      great though.

  • Glorious stuff. He's a perrenial choice to put on CDs i make for people.

I think his releases are too hard to get a hold of for people to buy them and make him bigger though

    • This Japan HMV

lark is grand, me going to buy The Lie Lay Land when pay day veers its lovely face.

      • you can buy

direct from Noble Records, and you should.

        • The Lie Lay Land & Hurtbreak Wonderland

Arrived yesturday, joy! Nice packaging too.

  • i've mentioned him

although i haven't heard any of the music, i just wanted to know where to get Hurtbreak Wonderland. HMV in Japan seems the best bet.

    • HMV Japan -

Quick delivery, bubble rapped C.D’s Nice corporate smile, what more could you want!
