Having all your music in a digital
format will make this thread much longer than it would have been five years ago.
But I don't have all my music in a digital format anymore, so I can't help.
The Decemberists
'The Tain' - clocks in at around 18 minutes, I believe...
Mogwai
Fear satan is about 16 min long, or my father my king is about 20 min.
^This
A superb song indeed.
Also, try Fucked Up - The Year Of The Pig - imagine a hardcore Bohemian Rhapsody.
Matmos - Supreme Baloon
Electronic bliss.
ooh
I'd never listened to Matmos before
this is really nice, thanks
MORE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE
NOFX - The Decline
18 minutes of punky goodness
also Joanna Newsom - Only Skin
is only 7 seconds shy of 17 minutes
This:
Richard Youngs - Only Haligonian (22:28)
=> a repetitive piano pattern that hardly evolves over time augmented with eerie, wailing voices
Leopard Leg - Sea (22:01)
=> starting off with the sound of the sea combined with ambient noises and distant choral singing, like mermaids in the mist, then adds marching drums around the 7 min mark to develop into a full blown cacaphony of noise before returning to a quietly sung drone
Tortoise - DJed (20:57)
=> after a quiet first 3 mins the track gets going in traditonal jazzy post rock style, all tight drumming and swirly guitars before changing time signature and turning into a dub work-out, continuing with trademark xylophones then finishing with the quitness from the opening minutes.
Machinefabriek - Lawine (18:26)
=> ambient rumbling electro-noise sparsely littered with piano chords that increases in volume over the course of the track
Stereolab - Refractions In The Plastic Pulse (17:32)
=> mid-tempo, slightly jazzy organ-led song with French-language female vocals gets more choppy after 5 mins before turning distinguisly weird at the halfway point before closing with the sound of toy keyboards and violins
this was exactly the kind of reply I was looking for
do more!

Dammit! In a couple of months, I could Jag away...
...but we're releasing a 20 minute instrumental thing later on this year- mournful & quite often noisy, with lots of sections and parts. PM me if you fancy a link to a live recording.
I've got one that runs to 16.47
The rest that run over are medleys...
I've got a long version of My Father, My King by Mogwai which clocks in between the times you've mentioned.
Automat - The Rise, the Fall, The Genesis.
Epic Italian space
-age instrumental (disco?) number. It's the entire first side of their album.
More about Automat here.

Sonic Youth - Diamond Sea
Washing Machine version - 19.36
Destroyed Room version - 25.48
starts off pretty chilled. guitars so phased out they sound more like a bubble machine, then after about 5 or 6 minutes it descends into feedback and noise
This (reprise):
MV & EE With The Bummer Road - Death Don't Have No Mercy (23:33)
=> more a soundscape than a proper song, haunted, scary noises with the odd wailing guitar and a dash of harmonica, except for a brief period two-thirds in when someone discovers the joys of feedback
Sianspheric - Where The Planets Evolve, I Wish I Was There (21:19)
=> build around a simple drum track and a looping guitar motif in the background, this is an experiment in echo-based noise with no clear goal or direction
Thurston Moore - Elegy For All The Dead Rock Stars (19:46)
=> one guitar, one chord for the first 5 mins, then the band kicks in to go all droney on us, with a few more chords, and a hint of distortion, but still based around that one guitar, before things get ugly for a bit, and service returns to normal for the finale
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - East Hastings (17:58)
=> after an intro containing preachers and bagpipes this song maintains a stillness for a long time, and only gets really going in a gloomy, threatening fashion by the time we're halfway, only to reveal its true orchestral beauty before slumping into undeterminable noises in the final third
Yo La Tengo - Night Falls On Hoboken (17:42)
=> easily hummable, this song drifts along quiet nicely, nothing much happens and the listener is never challenged, perfect company whilst reading a book late at night
thanks again
anyone else have any more suggestions?
maybe something kind of 'fusion' (can I say that word on DiS?) with some tribal or none-western drumming styles/patterns/sounds
???
how long is skylon! by gruff rhys?
not sure if this is over 17 minutes or not. it's basically a quaintly rambling song about bomb disposal, terrorism and mediocre actresses, set on an aeroplane. good song.
14:36
cop shoot cop
by spiritualized. sounds like spiritualized.
:/
I've got a version of Sexy Back on my iTunes that's 18 minutes long.
you don't need a description.
