my question to those that already have one, is what accessories would i be best buying (ie. memory card? 2nd remote? remote charger, etc, etc?

Ta!

Second remote

definitely.

i reckon the wii is going down very soon

i cant imagine it lasting much longer than a year before the bubble bursts. Periphery after periphery cant save it from its doom

and

what is even worth playing on it bar wii sports anyway?
mario karts just the same as it was just with better graphics, and that seems to be its biggest selling point so far

.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympics is amazing

Super Mario Galaxy

is one of the best games I've ever played.

Zelda is pretty awesome too.

Zack and Wiki is amazing

Super Smash Bros.

mario mario mario

nintendo really pulled out all the stops there

yeh its good

but its still ANOTHER mario game. much of nintendo's output are franchise games: zelda, metroid, mario galaxy, smash bros, mario party, mario kart. its all just the same ideas getting recycled with every console, they just have a diufferent control system for these ones

It's just a character

they could have made it anything.

It's not like halo or metroid or smash brothers or any of those games because it's just a platformer which they wanted people to pay attention to therefore - mario.

i just dont see the point in creating this fantastic new system

then flooding it with grandma friendly tosh, and reworkings of games they made 5years ago

gakaxy isnt, no

it is very inventive and fun. im just talking about sequels over originals. i was hoping for some fresh talent on the wii, to raise it above standard consoles and become something better. maybe it still can!

^ all of these.

Fuck Wii Sports, it's a novelty that runs dry and is the kind of thing for Christmas gatherings that your parent's friends think is "hilarious fun"

...

i AM old! so i think the novelty will last ;-)

mario galaxy

smash bros

Bubbles don't really 'burst'

with games consoles if the userbase is there. The Wii's dominance over the other consoles will probably become smaller or disappear soon, but there'll be developers releasing games on it for a long time afterwards regardless.

If you want to play the games already available for it, then go for it. I'd not spend too much on memory cards at the moment: although there's lot of good downloadable stuff available, there's talk of a USB hard drive on the way.

'going down'?

i think it will fail, basically

i dont think they can sustain the audience they have for the games they produce. Theres only so many fun things you can do with a rectangular block of plastic before you run out of ideas surely.

I dunno if anyone would agree with me, but I really much prefer the standard game controllers for actually playing games.

The wii just strikes me as a short lived novelty really. hence the vast array of extras people fork out on

Don't doubt Nintendo's creativity.

I was incredibly wary of the DS for a long time, thinking it was a gimmicky piece of shit. But now I've got one I bloody love it. And it's still going strong several years after launch.

i dont doubt that

i just doubt the publics willingness to accept more mario based novelty 'party' games. the ds is one thing cos its hand held but this is totally different

Yeah, fair enough,

but it's not all mario-based novelty party games. E.g:

Metroid Prime; Resident Evil 4; Okami; No more Heroes.

true, but dont forget

metroid's a sequel, and Okami and Resident 4 are ports rather than originals

Indeed.

But the average Wii owner isn't really going to care about that.

The only people who would be disappointed are serious 'gamers' who spend 12 horus a day playing Call of Duty against random American teenagers on their X Box.

my neighbour does this!

hes clocked up 5 game days in a month. i cant condone this behaviour

i take your point

its not meant to be the same sort of console as there has been in the past

...

i'm not really a big gamer (i've never owned a console), so i'm not fussed about ps3 v xbox v wii etc arguments.

i'm getting one for the missus' birthday (so a kind of joint present)... so we'll only use it for a laugh and fun rather than serious gaming =)

so as long as we can have a laugh with it, that's the main thing!

in this case

the Wii is perfect.

facepalm

I disagree, mostly

although I think that spamming peripherals is kind of a bad idea.

Don't bother getting a memory card

I've never needed one. Those remote chargers are a rip off too, just get some rechargeable AA batteries and a charger. Buy Resident Evil 4 as soon as possible.

good work

thanks chuff

Mario Kart + Extra Wheel

Then buy Battalion Wars and Zelda and Mario Galaxy and be content that you are better than idiots who think the Wii is some kind of gimmicky flash in the pan. Thanks.

thanks

snow_brigade =D

Also: extra nunchuck

if you wanna box.

...

what's the difference between a remote and a nunchuck?

the remote

is the thing that looks like a remote (obviously) and the nunchuck has the analogue stick and a couple of other buttons. you need them both to play most of the games you if you're buying a second remote you should buy a second nunchuck too

aha

so in a basic pack, you'll get 1x remote and 1x nunchuck?

Yes indeed.

are the nunchucks / remotes

wireless?

looking at accessories, you can get wired ones and wireless ones?

the remote is wireless

and the nunchuck has a wire which plugs into the bottom of the remote. you've not got any wires going to the console itself. i think if you buy wii play you get a remote free and all you have to get is a nunchuck and you're set.

aha

i was thinking maybe the nunchuck wire had to go into the console... i should pay more attention to the adverts!

thanks craggyhill, you've been most helpful =)

you need:

another remote
resident evil 4
mariokart
mario galaxy
battalion wars
twilight princess
internet connection
and okami when it comes out on friday

you'll be set for many many hours of joy with that lot

Also, Endless Ocean & Eledees

Both are quite ridiculously fun. Plus, the former will teach you lots of marine biology.

haha

we had 2 frogs in the house at the weekend so that might come in handy!
