Indeed
aspiring bands should note that emailing people at work will make them into fans instead of just pretending to be a fan of your own band on internet forums.
www.myspace.com/whosyourfavoritesongod
it's like Hella ON SOME SORT OF DRUG or another outlandish description that nobody has ever used before
to be fair
they emailed me at work complaining that they couldn't remember their log in details, and i listened cos they had a silly name and bio
:(
Hopefully an emailing random people at work trend will still prevail.
If I forgot my password I would complain to myself as opposed to some poor person who was totally free of blame. For shame Terrordactyls.
Yeah, they're good

the real question is
who is your favourite sun god?
i'm gonna go with this guy in the first instance
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freyr
actually this one is pretty cool
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malina
i am going to spend my evening reading about sun gods
I'm tending towards him now
"He rides the shining dwarf-made boar Gullinbursti and possesses the ship Skíðblaðnir which always has a favorable breeze and can be folded together and carried in a pouch when it is not being used."
He rides on the back of a boar called Goldenburst. Yes.
look at this guy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huitzilopochtli
Whoa
he is left handed. I think that is the clincher.
what's a dwarf made boar
i want one
Or maybe
Huitzilopochtli
"His mother's pregnancy with him disturbed his brothers and sisters who tried to kill her, but Huitzilopochtli sprang from her fully adult and armed and slew his siblings."
You have to be a bit of a badass to do that.
yeah
also this
"Wi
In Lakota mythology, Wi is one of the most supreme gods. He is a solar deity, and is associated with the American Bison. He is the father of Whope. Anog Ite attempted to seduce Wi, but she had one of her two faces changed into an ugly visage as punishment"
not quite as badass 'Huitz' though
I think this discussion needs its own thread.

Chromeo are quite excellent. Saves the Day on the other hand can do one.
Chromeo are shit.
They really are.
Ehhhh
They've set out to make silly electro funk music and have succeeded mang. Big time. Sort of like Flight Of The Conchords except real and only doing sexy 80s funk.

yeah and also the proposition soundtrack, its brilliant, song for jesse is beautiful

I replied to that Astral Social Club post ye kna! Admittedly I might as well have just typed 'yeah!' in capital letters for all I contributed, but still! Great music innit
It's wonderful
I have 3 or 4 of the main releases - i.e. not the CD-Rs - in the last couple of weeks and they are taking some absorbing. The guy is a freak - at first, like I first thought of Richard Youngs, I thought there couldn't be much quality control but in both cases nothing can be further from the truth. It's really exciting seeing somebody adapt their sound and come up with a sound that is really new. It also feels like he is only just beginning onto a path that will end somewhere extraordinary. I like.
Haven't heard much Richard Youngs
but I really like all the ASC stuff. When he drops in an acoustic guitar every so often you can sort of see how similar to Vibracathedral Orchestra it is. In a way.
You'd like
R!!! He isn't a million miles away from Campbell and Bower stuff - in spirit at least, although the solo stuff is often just him and an acoustic guitar. Get Sapphie. Tis gorgeous.
Maybe I will
Maybe I will!
Skullflower are playing up here on Tuesday. Skullflower ain't particularly gorgeous at the mo though.
Oh I don't know
that crunching they do could be described as just that!
I guess so
it seems a bit darker than Hototogisu and Sunroof these days I reckon.
Mmm
I've never heard Hototogisu. That is Bower as well, right?
aye
and someone from Double Leopards. They sound a bit more blissful (if you know what I mean) on the cd I have but the Aquarius blokeys seem to see it differently!
"On Some Blood Will Stick, the two are at their most caustic and metallic, huge washes of coruscating guitar, shrieking feedback, droning buzz, a massive roiling black sea of sound, peppered with all manner of industrial grind and corrosive crunch, and for the first time the vocals are actually audible, just barely, still buried way down in the mix like just another layer of furious freaked out sound, but occasionally the howling, shrieking super distorted black-metal-meets-Whitehouse yowl manages to rear it's ugly head before being sucked back under. Intense!"

Having seen Juno I just don't feel much of a need to talk about why I like music anymore. She has done it enough for all of us I think.
There are a finite number of ways to say 'great yeah!'
That said this chart is great yeah
'She has done it enough for all of us I think'
oh man, me too
What Killdozer stuff were you listening to?
12 pt buck
mainly because its what i found first. i'm open to suggestions as to what to listen to next...
Ah ok...
I only have the Uncompromising War on Art Under the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.
I really like that, but it's the only thing I've heard. Think I may pick up something of theirs with my emusic downloads this month.
intellectuals are the shoeshine boys of the ruling elite
is pretty good as well from what ive heard of it, great band by all accounts though, imagine most of the stuff they were putting out about then was pretty good
God Hears The Pleas of The Innocent
is the only one they've got on emusic. I guess I'll get that.
Great chart
It's full of stuff I've listened to a few times and gone YEAH I SHOULD BUY THIS. But I never have the ££££

and my fave sun god is.... UTU
Utu is the god of the sun and of justice, and the implementation of law. He is usually depicted as wearing a horned helmet and carrying a saw-edged weapon not unlike a pruning saw, which it is thought he used to cut through the side of a mountain from which he emerges, symbolising the dawn. He may also carry a mace and stand with one foot on the mountain.
Sounds like a kodak moment
if there ever was one
I like
how it says that "he may", it also implies that "hey may not". He may also, sit on a park bench and have a sandwich.
very true
'he may be a fan of the popular indie film Juno'. not enough other people are picking their favourite sun god, hmmm.
i quite like the cheap time album, i seem to be in a minority there though
well
I really loved the demos/singles, and had high hopes - I was initially disappointed, but it has grown on me.
i havent heard those
i take it theyre worth it if i like the album?
definitely!
Find the "Handy Man" and "Spoiled Brat" singles, none of the tracks made the album for some weird reason, and all of them are better songs (IMHO).
He *could* carry a mace
If he wanted to. He could carry that and the pruning saw. He's not a weakling or anything.

Cool!
Way to turn night into day, sun chariot
Sunburned
are up here on Thursday! I hope we get Chris Corsano and not that guy who made them awful last time.
Awful last time?
I really enjoyed it. It was one of my favourite gigs of last year.
I took your advice on Pere Ubu
CDs should be arriving this week. Excited.
I might go catch Sunburned. I've heard they're 'interesting' live.

1 i said i was obsessed.
2 i got the 2CD reissue of 'brewing up with billy bragg' in that play sale a few weeks ago and it's fucking brilliant. why have i never listened to his solo records before? silly me. i nearly bought like three more of the pretty reissues today because they were £6.99 each but then i remembered that i'm £400 overdrawn.
3 he plays the ukelele and both of his albums are available for free download on his website. they're lovely. i'm actually going to pay for them at some point SOON.
4 oh god he's back.
5 finally got the finished version of the new album and it SLAYS. it's also SLAYING my poor CD burner at the moment, i've run off about seventy copies of it over the last few days. we're so DIY! by which i mean "poor".
7 why had i never heard them before last weekend? brilliant stuff.
Dismemberment Plan! Amazing amazing band
Yeah. When's the An Emergency album out?
next month in shops
although they'll have it at the shows they're playing at end of the month.

"above"
Ben Ivers I mean
Yeah,
the 'Down I Go' thread that popped up earlier this week prompted me to give them a listen and see what all the fuss was about. Picked up a copy of 'Tyrant' and was suitably blown away. For a band of this caliber, and a British one no less, I'm surprised I''d never heard of them before.
They're so, so brilliant.

I love
similar bands like Solefald and Enslaved, but for some reason I could never get into Opeth. I heard 'The Lotus Eater' on their myspace page, however, and was blown away. How does the whole album compare?
lotus eater
is a particular high point on the album, but the rest is consistently good - there's still the distinct 70s prog feel, but this is integrated more subtly than previous releases. a real progression
Quaristice is really good.

1. Took advantage of the Warp promotion and picked this up for 6 quid. Really, really impressed; it's sprawling and hard to take in but I feel like I'll be coming back to it for ages.
3. New album is lovely. The production is really beautiful and while the songs aren't especially immediate, I haven't stopped listening since I picked it up on thursday.
6. All from the Ringer EP. It's amazing, especially the third track. I hope he pursues this on his new record; it's very much of the time, but he has the talent to do pretty much whatever he wants.
oooo
I've heard lots of good things about that Four Tet record. I will have to check that out.
Of the time? What do you mean- it sounds like Skull Disco, right? Please tell me it sounds like Shackleton. Hehe.
Hahahaha
sadly no. I just mean that there's a kraut rock/afrobeat influence which is obviously very fashionable right now. The third track is really, really beautiful and it's well worth picking up.
Yeah
I just read the little Plan B review which said it was where Detroit meets Kraftwerk. Interesting. I am "borrowing" it right now.
I didn't know which "the time" you were speaking of.
Off topic slightly
but where to start with Kraftwerk? I love Neu!, Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, Can etc but for some reason have never got around to investigating.
Re Ringer, the Detroit comparison is probably a little off; I really don't think it's anywhere near to being minimal in comparison to, say, Deepchord.
I first started with
a lovely tape copy of Trans Europe Express. Go there.
Cool, cool
will pick that up asap. Merci.
Ringer is fandabbytastic

I saw John Cooper Clarke at ATP
I enjoyed. What are Tim Hecker like? Are they post metally stuff?
no
distorted, glitchy ambient stuff. Very nice it is too - you should definitely check out his Harmony in Ultraviolet album if you're into that sort of thing.
JCC was great!
We got a class photo of him in front of all the Sunn amps.

Maybe I'm old fashioned
but Ij ust don't get the obsessions with Last FM, especially telling everyone weekly totals, like it's some self satisfaction.
It's a flawed system too.
I love

I'm sad to say this could be my last meaningful chart for a while, as my laptop with all my music on doesn't work on my broadband at home due to Vista being a silly bitch with Orange Broadband.
1) Superfuzz Bigmuff re-issue. Excellent re-issue, loads of extra stuff and it absolutely rocks. Very excited for the 31st July.
2) Not usually my cup of tea at all, but picked up a copy of The Lost Riots for 40p off Amazon. Very impressive, I like the post rocky touches a lot. And the emotional vocals, cause I'm a massive emo.
3) I really need to get something else by them apart from Double Nickels.
5) If someone ever asked me who my favourite 'pop' band were, I'd say Q And Not U.
7) I am actually feeling mega pissed they split up now. Excellent debut. Eins Zwei Drei Hasselhoff is becoming a mixtape staple.
9) How can anyone not like this band? HEY?

1 (a) I've been listening to alot of MxBx lately, what with me going to see them in Leeds soon. I can't wait, as from what I remember they are a fantastic live band.
5 & 10 In anticipation of supersonic
7 (a) After hearing Fantomas will be playing the directors cut in its entirety at the nightmare before christmas I thought I'd give it a listen for the first time in about two years.
7 (b) Seen them live at Middlesbrough music live, although not the best performance ever it got me in the mood for a Rolo Tomassi session. I'll be having a lot of these, I will be seeing them 4 times in about a month - MML, supporting MxBx, crappy little gig in Middlesbrough, and at supersonic
I think I shall go
to Melt Banana in London. But it's between them and Negative Approach the day before, due to costs.
But oh man, the Rolo Tomassi girl last night at Bardens looked amazing. She's cute as a button and then she lets rip this awesome scream. Hardcore dancing never looked so sexy.
^^^ sobs
missed that, completely forgot about it! and keep hearing about this girl singing, sigh, when's the next one?

I have to find y'all a link for "a cop and a criminal" as they're completely unheard of and really quite good in a G vs B/Liars type way. Breeders new one has had a few spins and it's a grower and I just heard BRMC's Howl for he first time and am quietly impressed. Kevin Shea is a snot nosed punk rocker with songs like "the sound i make when I fuck" "who put out this fucking bullshit" etc. and I've been on a swirlies trip this week, awesome band! I believe they have uploaded a couple of older albums to www.evil-office.net/swirlies
if you like that sort of thing...
