Spiderland by Slint

Okay, so this is pretty much one of the greatest things ever right?? I've had the album for a couple of weeks now, and still can't quite get my head round its brilliance... post-rock? Hardcore? Poetry?!

Wow!!!! I love everything about it, especially the way that the whole album just builds and builds into 'good morning, captain'... and the part at the end where he screams 'I MISS YOU'.

Anyone else got any thoughts? DiScussion? What is Tweez like? Worht an ebay investment? Also glenn/rhoda ep.... any good?

I'm so annoyed i got into them too late for the spiderland tour... though rumours of a proper reformation excite me.

  • the ep is really good

tweez less so, i'd just wait see how much you wanna hear it after the other two, its not as good as either though

  • you should have bought tweez first

because spiderland is so good that anything else is going to be a bit of a disappointment. The EP is great too, you should get it.

Anyway, yeah, this is one of my favourite ever ever ever albums. 'Washer' is just amazing. yay slint.

    • oh

and when i saw them live it was mega disappointing, so don't get your hopes up too much. That may have been because it was at Butlins though. Slight lack of atmosphere going on there...

      • slint at camber

at the slint-curated ATP was much better, with great lighting and a dark room in the late evening. that butlins pavilion early afternoon wasn't the ideal surroundings to see them, having spent many a night listening to spiderland on headphones in the dark.

        • yeah

they were pretty cool at primavera last year but that was against the sunset over the sea in spain

        • ^ this

obviously never seen them, but I more than understand this.

  • tweez is massively different to spiderland

I bought it and was expecting it to be similar and as good, and it is neither.

I "got it" so to speak after a year of having it - some of the riffs and rhythms on Tweez are brilliant, and every now and then I crack it out to headbang.

If you buy it, don't expect anything of it, just enjoy it for what it is.

The EP is worth getting just for the extended version of Rhoda. When I saw them at ATP vs. Fans playing in broad daylight, this was the song that saved the set - they played it last and it was absolutely brilliant. Before that the set was completely lifeless, and really really weird. Seeing the climax to Good Morning Captain stood next to a Burger King was possibly one of the most surreal moments of my life.

    • ^

this is what i was trying to say.
And yeah, Rhoda was absolutely brilliant. The EP is definitely a must have :)

  • i love the albini review in melody maker

  • i bought this ages ago and it's never sat right with me.

I can't explain why, but i just never quite ascended it to find its peak. I'll try again.

    • very similar

but then it got stolen with my car a week after i bought it. d/led it last week (i've had the empty case for years now) gonna try it this weekend

  • ...

I started out thinking this was just painfully average.

But every adulatory thread I read about this album just pushes me more into the realm of hatred.

For the record, I deem Spiderland to be tedious. Nothing builds. The instruments sound like they were recorded in a tin shack. There's no dynamic variation to any of the songs, they just plod along at a dirge pace. Occasionally it'll get a bit quiet, and occasionally a little louder - but never enough of either for me to notice. The drummer must have died halfway through recording for all the creative rhythms I heard. And each of the seven songs sound indistinguishable from each other.

And then it just ends. Whimpering.

    • this is what i thought

but i haven't listened to it for 2 years so maybe i don't remember right.

enjoyed them at vs the fans though (the noises at least. What a dynamic stage show)

    • are you getting them mixed up with

      Slunt?

  • i've never really rated them

it may be seminal but there are lots of other bands that do it better

  • aah

this came up in my dissertation a few times, its a really good album, but certainly not amazing. the key is the devices whcih they emply which at the time were very uncommon..

i loved 'washer' the best i think

  • a difficult one

if i'd have heard this when it was released i would have been impressed, but i still don't think i would have liked it. too grey in tone, too po-faced of attitude, subsequent bands proed that you can do a similar thing but with colour, strut and joy.

  • This is in my top 3 of all time

Even though I've had it on CD for years, I still bought it on vinyl when I saw it. The bit in Don, Aman where 'a plane passes silently overhead' is worth more than entire albums by most bands.

  • glenn...

    roeder?

  • I really love Tweez

I never actually got into Spiderland originally, lost it and didn't bother getting it again.

I must give another go though as all I ever hear are life changing moments

    • yeah its great

I don't understand people not being blown away by its total bizarre-ness
