ATP New York

Anyone else from Britain taking a trip over the pond for it?

  • me me me

i feel so smug.just remembered i got a ticket.that makes me feel so much better after the come down of primavera.thankyou!!!

    • cool!

i didnt know you were coming. good work.

      • Jamie...

...any idea when the rest of the line up will be announced?

How was Primavera by the way.

wish i could have been there but i was skint and still recovering from EITS

        • sorry not sure, sorry

primavera was incredible, highly recommended. i am now very very skint.

  • I want to

but I haven't been able to convince any friends. Cost and distance are a big obstacle for most ...

    • yeah..

Its gonna break the bank for me and im gonna be a hermit for most of the summer in order to save for it but i need to do it. Need a long overdue holiday. The lure of a week in New York and taking in that line up too is far too much for me to miss out on

  • Anyone with a spare bed

    please?

    • Me and Mrs me are going.

I was her cunning way of dragging me to New York. If friends back out we may have spare places in our room.

      • Ok

well, I'd definitely be interested, let me know!

  • I'm definitely thinking of going!

But don't know anyone else who is - anyone? I need to get a room sorted!

    • I finally

found some people to go with but now it seems both hotels are full, so it probably won't happen ...

      • Sh!t

        really? ;'(

        • There are other hotels in Noo Yoik

Its an expensive city but there hostels and stuff that are pretty reasonable if you hunt around.

I might go to this. Cant make my mind up. And I have friends there I could stay with.....

          • uh

you realise the site is like 150 miles or something from New York City?

            • Is it?

              Oh piss!

Note to self - read stuff more closely. Where is it then?

              • kutshers country club

                monticello

                  • Fuck that then

And ta. Sorry for being useless.

                    • its actually only about

90 minutes drive so not really that far from manhattan. not much longer than taunton to minehead really!

                      • How many people

book their hotel in Taunton when ATP is in Minehead?

                        • plus

                          Taunton - Minehead = 24 miles
                          Manhattan - Monticello = 106 miles

i.e. about 4 times as far and more like a 2 hour drive

                          • true

but there are hotels and hostels nearer as jgjug mentions below. just saying its not THAT far from NYC to the site.

also comparing the types of roads connecting taunton and minehead and the types of road connecting manhattan with monticello probably wouldnt make the journey that different timewise. plus it would be much more pleasant ;-)

                • Just had a quick look,

there's a Best Western and an Econo Lodge in Monticello. Either of those are worth trying.

                  • Enough miffling!

Look what I found: Americas Best Value Inn @ Kutsher's Marquis - "The Catskill Mountains' newest hotel located adjacent to Kutsher's Country Club, this 60 room property features use of many of Kutsher's facilities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, and an 18 hole golf course."

This is 10 times better than staying at the Raleigh 3 miles away (the other option previously offered by ATP).

They have rooms available, and you can reserve online and still cancel up to 3 days before the festival. About 240 pounds for 2 people/3 nights.
                    See for yourself at www.americasbestvalueinn.com

                    ATP NY here I come!

          • .

East village bed and coffee looks like it should be totally wicked nice. i'm going to new york in a couple of weeks time and was gunning for this place but am staying elsewhere as it was fully booked in march.

    • Lightning Bolt !!!

That's great as I can't make Release The Bats.

  • If you're stuck

for somewhere to stay, try the Chelsea hostel, not quite the chelsea hotel but I stayed there earlier this year and it was great and only £10 a night!

    • I stayed at the Chelsea Hostel last year

not sure what's "great" about it, but since the festival is 4 hours away from New York City I don;t think it'll be of much help anyway.

      • *90 minutes

        • Lightning Bolt.

          I am ecstatic.
My wife, probably less so !
£10 a night for the Chelsea Hotel, in Manhattan?
When we looked into booking there it was over $330 a night. Where did you sleep, in a cupboard?

        • *2 hours

          • well the 90 minutes

is coming from people who've driven it recently.

  • Anyone got a spare room

for a little one? I'll supply midget times and BOOZE!

    Hang on... that sounds sinister...

    • Probably....

Two places in a four person room.

    • ^

this person is trustworthy and friendly and stuff. give her a room!

      • I wouldn't doubt it.

Feel free to get in touch Lucy.

      • Aaah

        thanks Jamie!! :D

    • How about renting a Campervan

...and then parking it on premises?

      • How about

        sleeping in my car?

        • now all i need is a flight

cheapest ive found is with continental airlines £370..anyone found any cheaper?

          • Continental is horrible

..do not fly with them :(

          • £368.50

            with British Airways

        • I love you

          • woo hoo!!!!

manchester new york £344 on klm
            oh fuck i'm excited
even though ill have about £32 to spend when i arrive

          • Why don't you

quit your job and drive with me from San Francisco?

      • for people going 17th 18th

        • well

the winner for the monday before is Andrew WK at santos party lounge. OMGS.

on another note; Joe DeRosa replaced John Mulaney at the comedy, and the criterion film programme is pantwettingly stupendous.

        • There are loads

of interesting gigs in New York City on the 2 days before ATP NY.

          17th
Sigur Ros @ United Palace Theatre
The Mars Volta @ Hammerstein Ballroom
          Sunset Rubdown @ Mercury Lounge

          18th
Sigur Ros @ United Palace Theatre
          Mogwai+Fuck Buttons @ Terminal 5
Why? + Mount Eerie @ Bowery Ballroom
The Stills @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg
          Oppenheimer @ Mercury Lounge

Flying back on Monday night but MBV, Low et al play ATP any way so not too bothered.

          • I was under the impression,

both Low and sigur Ros were sold out.We fly out on the Monday, a few days up in camping in the Catskill Mountains after ATP. And back to New York for the weekend. A proper holiday like.

  • stage times

    • Lol

as if lightning bolt need 15mins or are gonna wait 15mins till they start playing after shellac.

    • Fantastic., no major clashes for me.

That bus ride seems incredibly cheap.

      • The regular bus

is $58 return and then you will have to pay for a cab from the bus terminal to the hotel/venue. This is an excellent deal.

        • so is anyone going to

the mogwai/fuck buttons gig on thursday.also 3 days...... FUCK!!!!!

          • i think i'll be up at the site

            by then! arrrrrrgh!

            • No.

But I did manage to get Sigur Ros tickets for Thursday.
We fly out on Monday. FUCK indeed!

            • jamie

you going to that "an evening with low"
              thing on the monday?

              • and is anyone replacing

                Autolux?

                • sorry no replacement for them

no i wont be at the low thing, probably seeing Andrew WK that night

          • No

because they both play at ATP NY.

I'm leaning towards Why?/Mount Eerie at the moment for Thursday.

          • yes

            I'll be at that.

            • oops

I meant the Mogwai/Fuck Buttons gig on Thursday

  • i am totally off tomorrow

    to NYC.
    see you all in monticello!

    • fucker

      I'm not jealous. At all

      • I'm also on an early flight tomorrow.

If you see an older chap, in glasses, probably wearing a Lords or Nervous Kid t-shirt(I can't imagine there being that many)at ATP, feel free to come say hello. I may even buy you a shandy.

        • sounds good

          see you there :D

        • i saw you

i was like,oh wow a lords tshirt.i was this close to talking to you

  • 10/10

    Best.Festival.Ever.
    (more tomorrow)

    • totally the best festival ever

      i"m still on a high.

  • Highlights

    - Thurston Moore and his nonchalant delivery of Psychic Hearts: “You do realise I wrote this record in one morning?” But with Chris Brokaw and Steve Shelley in his backing band, it sounded probably even better now then when it was first recorded
    - Patton Oswalt, his Uncle Touchy Naked Puzzle Basement and other acerbic gags unsuitable for politically correct audience
    - Built to Spill first running perfectly through Perfect From Now On, and then closing their encore with a blistering version of Car, my favourite BTS song of all time
    - Apse proving to be a lot more meaty than on record, driven by urgent rhythms and creating fantastic triple guitar-based droning rock.
    - Harmonia and the greatest irony of ironies, as they overlapped with Fuck Buttons, who appear to have borrowed more than one influence from these kraut-rock legends. People left the venue in tears afterwards.
    - Low having recovered from the trauma that was the End Of The Road festival. A chatty Alan Sparhawk, instead of trying to decapitate his fans with his guitar, invites everyone instead for an early Sunday morning jog around the lake (only two people took up the offer). And they played their new, slightly dark Christmas song, Santa’s Comin’ Over
    - Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington creating his now customary pandemonium. Dressed up like a madman? Check. Adolescent fan being sexually molested (simulated)? Check. Carried around the hall by the audience atop a giant step ladder? Check. Massive stage invasion finale? Check. The choice between this and the beard-stroking qualities of A Silver Mount Zion wasn’t too difficult in the end.
    - Lightning Bolt at ear piercing volume getting very intimate with an ecstatic audience. And did you know that Brian Chippendale used to go to school with Tim Harrington? An emotional reunion ensued.
    - The Wounded Knees and their strangely hypnotising fuzz-driven folk. Led by Kevin Shields’ little brother Jimi and being joined by J Mascis for the final song.
    - Mogwai kicking off with two new songs before hitting hard with more or less a greatest hits set. Stuart Braithwaite smiling from ear to ear and gushing how honoured he was to play with his heroes Dinosaur and MBV. Nothing indicated the drama that was about to follow immediately after.
    - My Bloody Valentine taking revenge for the relatively disappointing London shows. This time it was just as loud, but clear and crisp as well, so you could actually make out what was being played. And it did help that standing about 10ft away from Kevin Shields meant being able to watch each and every move. A brilliant finale to a brilliant weekend.

Also: the lovely staff at Kutsher’s who did their utmost to help their visitors, from calling taxis to advising which diner to have breakfast in (go for the Miss Monticello Diner, not the Blue Moon, which is overpriced and not as good). The most unobtrusive festival security ever. The Deep End Bar with its kitsch 60s interior and rubbish DJs. The semi-circular Stardust ballroom and its sloping terrace layout, ensuring a good view for everyone. The rather louche barman in the Sportsbar. The tacky chandeliers in the stage 2 room. The boating lake. Free ice cream. Non-stop sunshine.

    Best.Festival.Ever.

    • You've made me

incredibly jealous. I might have to sacrifice Primavera an go to this next year.

      • Scrifice eating and do both!

        :D

        • I went to both

but no other festivals at all this year. I like to think I picked wisely.

          • shit

            i wish i'd been there.
            :-(

    • i'd like to add

      - karoake with kii in the art gallery on sunday night
      - seeing so many people using the piano in the marquis lounge including alex tucker and members of trail of dead (playing songs from dark side of the moon??)
      - being made some sort of crazy drink by wooden shjips who were all stellar fellows
      - handing out earplugs to members of mercury rev, spectrum, trail of dead
      - the relief of the crowd actually being about the same as the uk one; relatively few hipsters and mostly really nice appreciative music geeks
      - golf cart fun
      - seeing a skunk
      - criterion cinema being amaaazing
      - serious look on indie rock fans faces as they faced albini at poker
      - boating lake of goodness
      - the pop quiz being just as hard as it is in the uk ones
      - MBV AGAIN!
      - many more things
      - see you all next year?

      • Does sound very good

Although I just don't think i'd be able to bring myself to buy a ticket and book a flight for an event that's thousands of miles away :(

      • I had to walk

past that grand piano every time I had to go to the room. The later it got the more wasted the people playing were, culminating late on Sunday night with a guy who hit a single key about once every 30 secs, wobbling dangerously without actually falling of the stool.

As far as the crowd goes, it reminded me a lot of the people who were at the Bowlie Weekender and the early ATPs, attentive when required (you could hear a pin drop during Low) or riotous when appropriate (e.g. during the Les Savy Fav antics).

        • Incredible weekend

          Additional/personal Highlights:
          - Arriving at 2am Friday night/Saturday morning to find the Deep End bar full of grinning and quite mashed friends. It set the tone immediately.
          - Mogwai,Fuck Buttons, Shellac, MBV, Lightning Bolt and what I saw of Growing.
          - Kutschers. The Lake. The freedom to move between rooms and bars with drinks without being hassled. Sunday afternoon at the lake was on a par with hanging around outside the Queen Vic at Camber back in May.
          - The party in room 709 on Saturday night. Possibly the best non-band fun I've ever had at ATP. Even the security guys there were hilarious. Thanks to Adam and the other guys hosting that one.
          - The crowd. I was stuck doing merch for a while but I met so many amazing people there that it was a highlight rather than a drag.
          - The last three hours in The Deep End bar on the last night
          - The weather being an ATP fan

          Lowlights:
          - Monday morning
          - Martin Bulloch being taken to hospital
          - The Deep End ceiling paint falling like snow onto my vinyl when I DJed on Friday

It really was brilliant, on a par with Primavera

          • can i just say thankyou to

barry, deborah, jamie, shaun, adrian etc etc for such a brilliant time!!!one day i think a festival should be held just for you.so you actually get to see the bands you love!!!!

            • we won the quiz

apparantly!nightcock!!have no recelection of this!!but we got a hotel room and 4 tickets for next year.WOO!!!

              • damn

                see you then.

              • wow

that's amazing that you won the quiz. Even better that you didn't realise.

                • Are the prizes for the quiz

normally that good? I've never tried it before. Think I'll have to arrange with my friends to give that a go in december now..

                  • number one prize

is always a chalet for the next fest, runner up / bonus prizes usually cds/posters/tshirts

                    • Got home today.

                      An absolutely fantastic weekend.
Probably too many highlights to mention.
With the only downers being missing most of Bob Mould, and having a hissy fit at MBV and walking out after the first song. To be honest, I thought the wait was taking the piss. In 5 years of going to ATP's, I've never witnessed a band pull what appeared to be a "rock star" keep em waiting move.
I apologise to anyone who happened to me (I have hazy memories of meeting Jamie) as I got seriously hammered, on Sunday night. And anyone who was unfortunate to witness my attempts a dancing in the bar.
The Rayleigh is probably the most scary, funny and bizarre hotel I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. The school bus as shuttle bus was a work of genius.
                      Thanks to all involved.

                      • the rayliegh

was a work of genius.but will be glad to stay in kutsners next year.the bus driver taking an hour and a half to do a ten min trip on the sat so he could drop random friends off seemed funny at the time.but thinking back.........

                        • I think you are right about Kutshers,

I have no recollection about the trip back on Sunday, but my wife tells me we detoured into Monticello to drop people off. She also tells me, it was partly my idea...
Anyone know who the bear was yet.
