...
Great band. Sad indeed.
Yep...
Makes you think about the people that keep saying downloading isn't bad for the band as they make much money by touring...
I was just
looking at their myspace yesterday (before they posted that blog), as I had saw that they were going to be the support for Why? next week at Madame Jojo's. Had never heard them before, but they sounded interesting enough. Wonder who will be the support for Why? now.
...
White Heat have backed them almost from the start and put out their 'Having a Ball' single on their label. They've played White Heat quite a few times and have always been top notch live. 'Tropical Mother in Law' is their best tune I reckon.
to answer my own question
it looks like Jonquil are supporting Why?
Which is good.
...
Sometimes I wish I hadn't moved from London.
god
...am starting to think there's a Curse of Plan B in operation, since we've given decentsize features to One More Grain, Safetyword, Cutting Pink With Knives and Help She Can't Swim recentishly...
maybe it's time
to give some features to shit bands, to see if that curse is working...
Good
They were shit.
yep
fucking awful band. one of the worst bands i've ever seen live.
thank fuck jonquil are supporting Why? instead. OMG are not worthy of being on the same bill as Yoni.
Hmmm
Obviously not Pitchfork enough for the two cunts above. Great band. And were one of the most inventive around at the moment.
Inventive?
I'm not sure they could cite more than 3 bands as influences.
Ok
and that's a bad thing why?
Because it leads to unoriginal music
which comes across as nothing other than a poor imitation of those bands which have gone before them?
?
Being unoriginal is the last thing I would have described them as. To my ears they were pretty much a genre of their own.
I don't quite understand
so, to not have many influences makes you unoriginal? You need more than 3 influences to be original?
...
Yes?
in which case
john cooper clarke vocal influence (or maybe its just the northern hunmour), can for the rhythms, miles davis and fela for the brass work, pere ubu for the discordance, and having a ball sounds like roxy music to me. plus the drones which i suppose are krautrocky or eno-y. i really thought they were in a league of their own though.
And where do The Fall come into this?
well...
yeah, or john cooper clarke, or even john shuttleworth. northern english narrative, isn't it? are you from the south of england by any chance? you don't hear too many complaints about the remaining hundred thousand home counties-based bands with identical characterless poshboy accents. it's funny how when the fall started everyone said he was ripping off johnny rotten!
Yeah, but they are just ripping off The Fall
*were
RIP.
nah
i don't agree with you on that at all. a definite influence, not just the vocal, the music had a definite postpunk feel when i saw the at the notting hill dis gig. having got the two albums i find it hardto believe that the fall could have come up with something as beautifully poetic as the track 'northern' about the lake district. totally different subject matter for a start. and this scarborough fair download is nothing like the fall.
Ripping off The Fall?
I'm not saying that the vocals don't sound to an extent like Mark E Smith. But that's the vocalists natural accent. In fact, I'd say his vocals are a lot more genuine than many other bands whose vocalists put on, say, an American or mid-Atlantic accent. What's he supposed to do, speak in a Brummie accent instead? In a Somerset accent? If you're Northern and you sing, you get compared to dozens of singers, but if you choose spoken word, then you get compared to Mark E Smith.....and that's it. Perhaps John Cooper Clarke as well. Mark E Smith doesn't own the rights to Northern accents.
Secondly, your crap about influences. Influences are usually very good bands...that's why they're influences. I can hear Can, Fela Kuti, Pere Ubu, Jon Hassell, Miles Davis etc in OMG. There's no shame in not being as good as these influences. Most acts do not surpass their influences. However, I feel that One More Grain, musically, stamped their own identity on their music, mixing the the exotic with the very English. Just reading some of the assorted reviews their albums got shows that others thought the same. To just hear it and dismiss it as ripping off the Fall is a narrow-minded knee-jerk reaction. Vocally, yes similarity, but musically I wouldn't say so. I'd say that XX Teens sound much more like The Fall myself.
fucking hell
"not Pitchfork enough for the two cunts above" must be some kind of record for the amount of twattishness you can pack into eight words. Maybe it's just, y'know, a difference of opinion?
Not really
look at the bands liked by the two detractors, they are very American sounding. One More Grain were a very English sounding band in many ways. Obviously just not their cup of tea. Sure, its just their opinion. But why bother coming on a thread about them calling it a day and being so nasty. It would be understandable if OMG had been a massively hyped band which loads of people would go on and on about constantly (a la Johnny Foreigner). But they weren't. There was just a handful of people saying how sad it is that they are no more, and then some children come on saying 'fucking shit', 'fucking rubbish' in a rather embarrasingly unarticulate manner. It's the kind of comments you'd expect from laddie Oasis/Kasabian/Pigeon Detective fans who would think OMG was arty rubbish. Not people who by the looks of it like interesting, often quite experimental music and who, though may not have liked OMG, might have at least appreciated them for trying to be different instead of the dozens of insipid, tedious indie bands out there that get a hundred times more press and attention. Why the such vehement dislike of them? Not like there were billboards for them everywhere you go, their songs on the radio every time you turned that dial.
Then again, perhaps one of One More Grain slept with their girlfriends or something. Who knows?

lol
good post. sorry for saying they are crap and i dislike them. i will never express my opinion again on a music board :(
That's a shame
since your opinons so articulate. The world has just become that little bit less rich and interesting today. We surely shan't see your like ever again.
expressing your opinion is good.
doing it this way in a split thread is more than a little bit insensitive.
But this is just a messageboard...
lol
Nobody's *died* lyle. Fucking hell.
I know
still not the best place to say bad things about them...
I'm sure they'll get over it
nah
it's your fault they split !
Don't tease me
you wish !
OMG
were pretty fucking excellent. this is pretty sad.
jonquil are fucking amazing though, how they aren't much bigger is quite a suprise. Try Harder seems to have a pretty good touch, maybe they will be?
That blog is just one about an album review and a jukebox....
... have they deleted the on you linked to?
*one
yeah
Looks like they've deleted the previous blog, saying that they've called it a day, and slagging off the Green Man Festival a bit, basically saying they offered them a pittance to play at the festival.
the Green Man Festival
and others...
i d love to get paid anything
and play my guitar....
even if coming there
cost you more than what they give you ?
what did it say? anyone got some cached thing?
Is a massive shame, I was literally just about to try and book them for a gig
yeah
the post appears to have been removed... intriguing
I'm bumping this thread cause i don't believe it to be true....
Other than a now-deleted blog post, is there any evidence that they've actually split? Can't find any news.
I refuse to go on living if i know i'll never get to hear 'Northern' played live.
all the gigs are cancelled
and read the last comments on their myspace.
