So I just downloaded their discography. Which album should I start with? They all sound great to me, but the volume of tracks makes me skip through them all.

It's A Wonderful Life
^ This
is a fucking amazing album.
^ I Second this
listen to 'cow' from this^
and then all of it's a wonderful life
MethodMandrill, these guys above are all very very wrong...
You CANNOT start with either of these 2 albums...the only place to start is....GOOD MORNING SPIDER...honestly that album is superb and they have never topped it ever!
Listen to Happy Man first...ignore these guys above...
no disrespect guys!
x
Don't be daft.
There's SO much more to the album than cow.
Not that I'm suggesting he SHOULDN'T listen to it's a wonderful life. Just not first.
worked for me, sir
well i'm non-the-wiser...
but thanks for your suggestions!
No you are the wiser
if you listen to me...im right and everyone else is wrong...
thanx muchly.
:-)
well you seem very sure
so i'll go with it.
ta.
Hey no worries
.
I'd work backwards
ignoring the last album.
Try and get hold of the Distorted Ghost e.p too. Their version of 'my yoke is heavy' is superb.
ooops
i thought i had the complete set, but i only have:
Good Morning Spider
It's a Wonderful Life
Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain
It's a Wonderful Life
The new album, Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain, is actually 80% old material and B-sides from previous releases.
DISTORTED GHOST EP
...definitely. Happy Man is amazing.
Hmmm
Im never really been overly keen on Good Morning Spider. It has its moments but overall is a bit weak.
As a starting point i'd go for Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot then Its a Wonderful Life.
DISTORTED GHOST is amazing!
I love the version of Happy Man - I saw them play at Church just as Wonderful Life was being released and they opened with it. Along with the birth of my 1st child it was the greatest exprience of my life!
Good Morning Spider
is the best one I think. It's a wonderful life is also really good. Never got vivadixie... but it's on my enormous list of records I've been meaning to get.
You should listen chronologically
Vivadixie... is like a huge diamond but rough and uncut
Good morning spider... my favourite album ever and so I guess I think it's perfect.
It's a wonderful life and Dreamt of... are less diverse and concentrate on perfecting a particular Sparklehorse style which while excellent, are not so rewarding long term.
Mark Linkous hasn't really ever done anything that's not at least good.
I should note,
I'm a shuffle whore and there are few albums that I feel require listening through but Good Morning Spider is wonderfully produced to move seamlessly between a diverse selection of songs and should really be listened to in its entirety.
It honestly does not matter
They are all briliant.
I heard it's a beutiful life first but i think i would have had the same reaction with any of the others - just pick one
.
and come to watch him open for daniel johnston and then play guitar in daniels band that will also feature james mcnew of yo la tengo on bass, scout niblett on drums, and jad fair and norman blake of teenage fanclub

...
I don't think it matters too much. There's a bit of variation from album to album but he's got a particular sound which is standard across all four albums. My favourite is 'Good Morning Spider' which seems unfocused but if any is the most diverse and interesting.
last two
the last two records have, as the_sad_oak_hunt says above, been one paced and focussed on one style of song. one of my favourite things about him is that he mentions Captain Howdy [the 'evil spirit' uses this name to introduce himself to the girl in The Exorcist] in a lyric on all of the records.
I tried to call a band i was in Captain Howdy, but i was outvoted. Aww.
^ this
If you're going to like Sparklehorse you're pretty much going to like any of their records.
Vivadixie...
and the Distorted Ghost EP for starters.
Yes yes yes
Always start with Vivadixie.
someday I will treat you good
is a stonking tune to be found on vivadixie. Back when I had a radio show I used to open with it every week. Ah nostalgia.
If you like sparklehorse...
take a listen to Surrounded. Swedish band very much along the same lines.
www.myspace.com/surrounded
Hmm...
'Safe Tomorrow Sun' sounds like Mark Linkous fronting Coldplay. This is a bit too produced to draw comparisons with Sparklehorse but I see why you have.
