Where to start with: THE REPLACEMENTS

MASSIVE gap in my music knowledge. Every single song I've heard has been great, but
I've yet to hear a complete album.

With a lovely tax rebate burning a hole in my overdraft which should I be purchasing?

  • Let It Be

    Tim
    Pleased To Meet Me
    Sorry Ma
    Trash

    probably the best order
    then the rest.

    • Good stuff, cheers Jamie.

I shall reread their chapter in 'Our band could be your life' too for a little background.

      • shit! forgot hootenanny!

get that after pleased to meet me.

        • why doesn't anybody

ever mention STINK - I sooo love it

          • Sorry Ma!

first...then let it be, pleased to meet me, tim, then everything else including the best of with the extra tracks and b-sides.
then all the westerberg stuff (starting with suicaine gratification), then the bash and pop stuff and perfect stuff and then tommy solo.
anyone reckon we could pull off a replacements night at a little bar in london?????

          • because its about 12

minutes long and so if he's going to buy a cd he'd be a bit disappointed by that fact?

            • no

I think the cd release is longer

    • HI

      I AGREE.

    • Sorry Ma

and Trash are the same album.

  • If you're tight for cash

The "All For Nothing/Nothing For All" collection might be a good bet. It only covers the second half of their career, after they gone a bit soft, but it has most of the anthems, as well as some cool oddities like "Date to Church" with Tom Waits and their unfinished Dylan cover "Like A Rolling Pin".

Then buy everything else, especially Sorry Ma and Let it Be

  • You could get

'Don't you know who I think I was' which is a good best of collection that got me into the band recently.

    • and that one has

a couple of 'new' tracks on it doesn't it?
i do have it but can't lay my hands on it right now...
i do reiterate though...what do people reckon to a 'mats night in london? i'm seriously considering putting one on...

  • Sorry Ma

Is my personal fave. Then Let it Be.

Don't be scared of (very) early Soul Asylum either - Made to Be Broken and While You Were Out are both excellent albums. Say What You Will is a cracker too.

    • also

...the horse they rode in on...always thought that was pretty good...and even clam dip.

      • yeah

definitely. Then it all went a bit wrong.

  • What is the general consensus on Westerberg's solo stuff?

I love 'Folker' but can'r really be bothered with the rest of it. Unless you count 'All Shook Down', which might as well be a Pablo solo record...

    • suicaine gratification

      is amazing, as is stereo/mono.
his grandpaboy stuff is great too.

  • There are also some great bootlegs out there.

'Shit Hits The Fans' is the seminal one and pretty easy to get hold of, and there's another one called 'Shit, Shower And Shave' that is by turns hilarious and brilliant. They are on tour with Tom Petty and clearly arseholed, and subsequently end up coating Petty off in front of his own fans. They still somehow manage to do some jaw-dropping versions of various songs.

    • Shit Hits The Fan

      was kindof an official release.

      • That's true

actually. Didn't they catch someone bootlegging the show and then demand that the label release it or something?

        • yeah

it was a limited edition cassette.

  • ...

    stink is great.

  • music-wow.com

have got the expanded deluxe versions of stink, sorry ma, hootenanny and let it be for £4.99 including postage...now that has got bargain written all over it

    • I'd suggest getting...

...maybe 'Let It Be' and 'Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash' first so you can decide if you're more a fan of their hardcore early stuff or the later, more radio friendly stuff.

If you then prefer the earlier stuff go for 'Hootenany!' next or if you like the later stuff go for 'Tim'.

  • Was blasting out Let it be in the car on the way to work this morning

    Cracking album.
