1 Bon Iver 37
2 Times New Viking 25
3 No Age 24
4 Odd Nosdam 21
5 Xiu Xiu 19
5 Dose One 19
7 Deep Puddle Dynamics 18
8 Hymie's Basement 17
9 Big Black 14
9 Frightened Rabbit 14

i just realised there is no why? in my chart this week
that must be the first week in about two months.
last week of music before exams :(
1 Born Ruffians 22
2 Pete & The Pirates 15
3 Jonquil 14
4 The Wave Pictures 13
5 Mystery Jets 12
5 No Age 12
5 White Williams 12
8 Vampire Weekend 11
8 The Ting Tings 11
10 Silver Jews 10
4.34345/10
I'm not a fan of much of that stuff, Silver Jews ist good though.
Fair play for avoiding the music during exams, definitely the best way to go if you want to actually remember things in my experience.
Why? Why? Why?
Why?
Why, exactly?
Why? Why?

Someone else
who's listened to the Other People Place. Sweet.
I love it
Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe that is. Its really understated, but it moves along nicely and its quite melancholic, which I like. I do love the slight mystery surrounding Underground Resistance-related artists too. Its a nice aesthetic difference when everyone is all too ready to overexpose themselves.
6.2332/10
Good mix there! Jane's Addiction are good and The Other People Place reminds me of People Place from the Adam and Joe Show which is worth a mark or two.

I respect Dirty Projectors for trying to be different and all that, but man is the music and his voice annoying! At ATP he was singing like Bjork over the top of an ugly ugly Trout Mask Replica kind of thing. It were 'orrible!
I've been pretty much obsessed with AC this week, rightly so.

btw:
i am revising at the moment, and rap songs tend to be quite short, hence the massive amount of plays.
i have a life, i swear.
MF DOOM and Madvillian are excellent <3 listen to themselves! deep puddle dynamics! dose one! and of course cLOUDDEAD if you haven't done already. all good rap. i have been getting into not-so-conventional hip-hop recently as well.
not-so-conventional hip-hop for a not-so-conventional person!
I love Vaudeville Villain long time
Gravediggaz!1!!!
7.456/10!11!
I'm really enjoying Liquid Swords having got it from that play.com sale thing. Shogun Assassin is a massively overrated film though despite the excellent ending (a sample of which is near the end of the album).

It's like you've been reading straight off Juno's fave band list! Fortunately I have the music taste of a 16 year old fictional girl (or a 27 year old ex-stripper writer) so I have to say well done and have a biscuit.
i do try
although ive been considering whether to adopt musical tastes i imagine ellen page's character in her latest film 'smart people' might have.
if youre interested she plays the "lonely, high-achieving, young republican teenage daughter" of a "depressed middle-aged widower" who is "arrogant at work, uninterested in his students, and alienated from his two children". the soundtrack had lots of this guy doing acoustic songs http://www.myspace.com/nunobettencourt
failing that i might just listen to classic psych-rock like kula shaker's new album or something.
Nuno Bettencourt???
The guitarist from 80s purveyors of complete turd Extreme???? Oh god. DO NOT ADOPT. DO NOT ADOPT.
That film sounds killer though doesn't it
oh no wait
Sarah Jessica Parker is in it
she's in a battle of wills against juno though
for the affection of juno's uncaring father. classic struggle of good versus evil and all that its all quite oedipal, so much so that there's a thread on imdb about how ellen page is being typecast as a 'paedophile victim' and how its wrong to glamourise this troubling subject matter. and people said juno wasnt edgy?
i had never heard of extreme before this film, i didnt realise people still listened to this sort of thing, hmmm maybe i havent been fraternising with middle americans enough.
psychedelic horsehit just broke my last fm, oh man.
That's some serious hidden depth there
Judging from the trailer it's your bog standard (excellent) dysfunctional family comedy. But underneath the surface...
I might have to seriously reexamine X-Men 3 now. I thought that was an enjoyably shite action film. With Juno in it.
yeah man
there must be something there, juno brings it to the films. i cant wait till...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172233/
In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.
I know!
I can't believe it's called Whip It. If the people of drownedinsound (tm) were mad at Juno they are going to go postal when that comes out!
from the messageboard
"
Whoever is writing these god damn movies, us indy-rock loving roller derby enthusiasts hate you. You are not tapping a hot market, you are killing us, and making it harder and harder to roller derby for the people who REALLY love it. Now every day when I get back from the derb, take off my skates, and turn on a little music, I will be reliving your *beep* movie. Hell *beep* yes. I heard Feist in WaWa the other day and I nearly squirted cheese all over my big bacon bite. I drove home, threw my apple computer in the dumpster out back, with all my music files in DRM encoded format, and promptly ordered a PC from Dell. Thank you Apple, thank you hollywood, for doing what you do best. I can't wait till the old rich white men and Kiera Knightly vote this for best screenplay because of those sassy kids and their kooky quirky alternative music tastes, and I can hang myself with the film from my 1996 ben folds five cassette tapes."
"roller derby enthusiast hangs self with ben folds five tapes in protest"
you reckon this is how the film will end now? i should hang out on the imdb message boards more.
"I heard Feist in WaWa the other day and I nearly squirted cheese all over my big bacon bite."
awesome
Yep!
I don't know what a WaWa is but I kinda want one.
Wasn't Nuno Bettencourt in Perry Farrell's last project as well.
Yes
Perry Farrell's Satellite Party. Noooo
If you had to choose someone to replace Dave Navarro I suppose it would have to be someone like him.
YEAHHH it finally updated.

A fairly generic week.
The Pipettes are only there as a result of me not pausing my iTunes.
I disagree with your opinions on Beck - i'm exploring his back catalogue and have recently uncovered the ecstasy and despair, depth and delights of Sea Change.
Persevere with these offerings, a forthcoming eclectic mixture should see that rating leap susbtantially.

Actually Psychedelic Horseshit sometimes sound a bit Pavementy but they are infinitely nastier/weirder so it's ok.
I've never listened to much Pavement tbh.

2 bands there on my 'must check out' list
Pere Ubu and X. Where to start?
Pere Ubu?
Start with The Modern Dance and Dub Housing. They're the two essentials. I've been listening to the later albums and they're all pretty good.
With X, I've only got Wild Gift and Los Angeles, but I'd strongly recommend both of them.
JGJug is the winner.
Jinner.

Amrep radio!1 Is Helios Creed as good as Chrome do you know? I keep seeing his cds cheap on ebay and meaning to buy them.
They have amrep tshirts for sale but they must think all amrep fans are huge. L, XL and XXL only.
I don't know Chrome.
Where's a good place to start? I've got some eMusic downloads but their discography looks a bit bewildering. Same goes for Helios Creed. I've liked what I've heard:-Buttholes-sy Krauty-ish stuff but wouldn't have a clue what to buy.
Unsane have probably been my favourites of the week. I got Lambhouse, their "Best of" yesterday. Reckon that's all the stuff I'll ever need.
Are the T-shirts the "Dope Guns & Fucking In The Streets" ones? I always wanted one of those when I was at school.
You can listen to Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks
on last.fm to preview. If you like 'Tv As Eyes' or 'Abstract Nympho' you'll probably like the rest!

2.New album is the shit, Take Refuge is a stunning track.
4. New album is one of the best Takoma-inspired works I've ever heard. The ambient Fennesz-esque bits he includes are so, so amazing.
Ohhhh, I'll be getting me a copy of that Grails album asap
Great band. I ordered one of their older ones off the Southern website a week or so ago. It should be here by now.
New one is AMAZING
A lot more improvisational/jam band-esque than their older the stuff, but none the worse for it. The attention to detail in the production is pretty astounding.
Is that Redlight?
That's a spicy meatball. I kept meaning to get a hold of all the stuff they released after that but haven't got around to any of it. Very bad.
You need
Burning Off Impurities and Take Refuge... in your life.
7.890/10
Someone from the Melvins board sent me a bootleg of the first OM gig with the grails drummer. The bass was really quiet on it but he's doing weird fills and stuff on the old songs. I hope the sub pop 7" is cool!
^5
I'm really, really excited to hear this. He's a fucking brilliant drummer and I was hoping he'd imprint his own style on Om. The old dude wasn't bad, but he was pretty standard. I wanna hear some off the wall shit going down.
Strangely, he plays guitar rather than drums on the new Grails record. Don't really notice though; the new guy's aping his style pretty well.

High On Fire are good though.
5.6546/10
Is that the self-titled Health album? I reckon the songs should be longer, they just seem to be getting going for me then they stop :(
I think I will put it on ebay unless anyone here wants it for good low low cheap price.

I did loads of shuffling this week, so fewer big hitters.
SATAN SATAN SATAN
1) Butthole Surfers 73
2) Shellac 48
3) Envy 34
4) Parts & Labor 31
5) Queens of the Stone Age 28
6) GZA/Genius 25
7) Battles 23
8) Mission of Burma 22
9) MF DOOM 20
10) Isis 17
1) Mostly Locust Abortion Technician and Hairway To Steven. They're so great. Seriously. I am gonna see them live.
2) 1000 Hurts. I really like Prayer To God and Watch Song. Where do I go next?
4) Stay Afraid is a brilliant album. I have Battles to thank for getting me into them. I think Zapsta got it right when he said they're the perfect combination of noise and melody. Plus synths like Bagpipes= win.
5) Songs for the Deaf still gets the adrenalin going. Grohl's drumming really is something, just the way he attacks the hell out of the kit. He is really overrated though, usually.
7) The EPs. I don't really like Mirrored, I don't think. I prefer it when they're a bit more toned down, less flourishy sounding.
The synth/bagpipes thing always makes me laugh.
Changing of the Guard sounds so amazing though
It's like noise pop you could goosestep to.
I bet CG loves it.
7.67/10
Dave Grohl is great at the drums! He should give up boring pop rock and go back to hitting things. All of Shellac is ace, you can't go wrong really. Terraform is probably my favourite.
I dunno
I don't really like Nirvana with him that much.
And he wasn't very good on that Killing Joke record.
I like him
with the Nirvanas! And otherwise i'm only basing this on watching him play with QOTSA at Glastonbury on the tv. Which was excellent.
excellent italian greyhound and at action park are both great
they are the only other shellac albums i have, but get them. i completely agree with you about battles
it's all change again

I haven't heard most of them. I don't like the Music though. Despite the fact that he tries to sing like Perry Farrell which is well admirable.

1 New album gets better with every listen. I really like the instrumentals with the notey bits
2 Still the album with the Deerhoof people on it. You can hear a bit of this band in Deerhoof I reckon
3 "Honky" one of the best Melvins albums! On Amrep.
3 30 amazing riffs a song madness
5 Guys from Los Lobos doing weird psych music with millions of different sounds and instruments
6 The Dinosaur Egg single. The b-sides are class
7 Amazing beats and mad guitar soloing basically
7 Peacetika! I wish they would rerelease this properly
7 Bonsai Superstar. I wish they would rerelease this properly
7 Walk To The Fire

I really really like that Torche album
I say it all the time, but it's true.
Have you heard the Nightmare Before Christmas rumours? Melvins and Mike Patton....I'm already frantically saving my pennies.
If that happens
it will be ace! But being a Melvins nerd board member I have to inform you that Buzzo only likes really long epic war films so the tv channel might not be as amusing as usual :(
On the plus side Meshuggah might play. The last two times i've had tickets for them they've cancelled the uk tour so that would be nice.
I really like epic war films
and I quite like Meshuggah.

Yeah, Songs on the Rocks
It's really, really good, a breath of fresh air. I discovered it from this review: http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=5235
I like RA...
I'm not sure about the boozecore label though. The previous (i think) Noze album 'How to Dance' is really good. Think I'll have to get this.
Totally different, but I've been enjoying the Richie Hawtin podcast from the RA site.

9 Same as last week
10 Yay
Someone lent me the Conchords thing
It's a bit disappointing. They miss out a couple of good songs from the series AND they cut the 'Teambuilding Exercise 99!' bit out of Business Time. And the 'turn it into a sexy dance' bit come to think of it. Laaame.
Yeah I'm a bit pissed at the omissons
Although on the whole it's quite brilliant. I'm giggling at some parts in songs :D

Relentless Parping
Ambient Wooshy Noises
Relentless Parping are great!
well, their debut self released CD-R 5 pressing was anyway. I thought that with their follow up, the 4 minutes of 90s keyboard sound effects recorded onto wax cylinder, that they failed to tread any new ground
Check out the new lathe cut 9"
they are back to their best with John Olson of Wolf Eyes guesting on electrified noise plank
I believed you until you mentioned electrified noise plank
cause that's clearly just a metaphor for a penis.
it's not a metaphor
but it is the aural equivalent
:(
He actually does play an electrified noise plank!
