Bands that surprise you with their popularity

I saw a band called Wintersleep at Great Escape that I'd never heard of, but seemed to pull a decent crowd.
Went to see them again last night at Barfly and the place was pretty busy again, even though they're not from these shores.

Am I just deaf, dumb and blind not to have heard of them?

Have you been taken aback by how popular some bands are? And I'm not talking about those who just bring a coachload of their mates from school to every gig.....

Team Waterpolo

Why the mingeclart do they get all the hype/ following?

the lynx effect?

Absolutely agreed

I saw em at Hoxton Bar & Grill and thought they were absolutely feckin terrible.
Cleared the room, they did. And rightly so.

Fuck Buttons

I mean, I don't hate them, but they're pretty irritating and simple to be honest, and I'm not sure why they get such a shitload of praise.

Most bands

surprise me with their popularity

I've heard lots of good things about them

but never got round to listening yet.

Two of my friends said they were the best thing at ATP..?

I saw them at Truck last year

They were just unspeakabley loud drone. I've since got the album just to see if it's any better, and it's not, I mean it might be alright to listen to as background music, but it's just odd.

Panic at the Disco

end thread

i second this

Methinks Wintersleep has connections to other bands

Holy Fuck maybe... I dunno.

But yeah, sometimes I look at a venue's upcoming show list and think to myself, "who the fuck would go see Papa Roach (or whatever)?"

Was that a...

...'they definitely have connections, but we're not supposed to say,' or a genuine 'I'm not sure but they might have connections!?'

Their drummer used to play for Holy Fuck

or summink like that.
But yeah, Wintersleep are a funny one. Seemingly massively well known in Canada, but I've never really heard people talk about them much over here, or on these boards.

He's a very good drummer

in a kind of 'you barely notice he's there, but if you watch him (like I do, cos I'm a drummer!) then you realise he's doing really good things behind that kit.

And I liked Wintersleep a lot, even though they're really not my sort of music. Maybe I should check out Holy Fuck,...

Yeah, definitely!

He's a fantastic drummer.
Best bit about the band, I think.
And do check out Holy Fuck.
dey r gud.

I was going to say LC!

But, to be honest outside of the rarefied world of the DiS forums you seldom meet anyone who cares.

they seem to be pretty popular

with the skins watching 'an indie' types at college.

Okkervil River

i guess.
they've gone from headlining the Luminaire to headlining Shepherd's Bush empire in a year. it's actually brilliant :D

MGMT

the kaiser chiefs

winterkids (where i live)
death cab for cutie.

Winterkids are big in Japan

And that's about it. I saw them at Truck last year which was a bit odd, and before that I'd never seen them play anywhere bigger than Farnham college.

The entire world of non-experimental metal, basically

Like, I don't know who any of these bands are regularly selling out the Academy and drawing massive lines of teenagers who begin to collect there at 10 o clock in the morning.

are "tool" experimental metal?

because i dont understand why theyre so popular.

Its not a matter of not understanding it, really

its more just I had no idea it was even going on.

"teenagers"

Expect the nonsensical.

I really don't understand the DiS one-knee-two-knee-suck approach to LC! though.

They're not the worst band ever - far from it - but they're really not all that.

Hang on a minute

This seems to have turned into a 'bands I can't stand' thread. I thought what the fella was asking was bands that had achieved popularity without the poster having noticed.

For example, The Hoosiers seemed to have become huge and I'd never heard of them. And then wished I hadn't, incidentally.

I've just looked at the Top 10 Singles.

Who the shit is 'Sam Sparro'?

I think I'm just out of touch.

Do you not read DiScover?

He's had a shitload of airplay and press. That Sam Sparro.

Talking of which

Did anyone see Andy from Emmerdale on that Vernon Kaye celebrity fitness challenge thing? Jesus wept! He looked like a fucking Spartan!

the

#

i thought everyone would find them depressing to the maxx

but all the collegers love them.

(at least at mine they do)

and hadouken! and crystal cumstains.

Kings Of Leon

Decent enough band, but permanently surprised as to why they headline arenas and festivals with such a small mainstream profile. In that they've never had a massive single and I doubt the average twatty Radio 1 listener could name many of their tunes.

^ I was gonna say KoL,

but I actually think they're pretty good. It was a strange moment when I saw them at Leeds last year and there was massive moshing and a rush to the front.

Also The Twang, who are obviously awful, but their music has slight hints of that 90's shoegazey bands like Stone Roses, which doesn't exactly mean chart fodder.

Stone Roses...shoegaze?!?!?!!!!!

The Twang are like a tribute band who specialise in Happy Mondays B-sides.

true

I don't know anyone who likes kings of leon, (some who think they're ok but no one who LOVES them) yet their albums seem to sell loads.

that band that played rota once

broken records or something. i had no idea who they were and thought i was going for a nice relaxing day at the arts club with my al hambra but the place had a queue and it was so packed i couldn't move. crazy.
