Someone on the National Lottery quiz thing was given a multiple choice question on who sung 'When a man loves a woman'.

One of the answers was Sam Cooke and she was like 'I think he was just some singer in one of the groups like The Drifters or something'.

Sam Cooke. One of those people whose talent should never ever be understated?

Sam Moore

isn't too bad either.

"Moore continued to tour through the 1990s. He released "I'm a Dole Man" in 1996, with the "Soul Man" lyrics rewritten, for Presidential candidate Bob Dole to play at voter rallies. The owners of "Soul Man"'s publishing rights did not agree with the claim it was fair use of the song as a parody, and forced the campaign to stop using the song."

Yeah

One of the few artists about which I agree with my dad.

Have you ever read about the circumstances of his death? A bit strange.

From the ever reliable wikipedia:

"The official police record states that Cooke was shot dead by Bertha Franklin, the manager of the Hacienda Motel, where Cooke had checked in earlier that evening. Franklin claimed that Cooke had broken into the manager's office/apartment in a rage, wearing nothing but a shoe and an overcoat"

live at harlem square club

...is something that should be heard by everyone.
and for the original poster, yes he is one of those people whose talent should never ever be understated. it's a shame that for most of those in my generation (30 and below) his influence and voice will never be known.

Yes I suggested this album to someone yesterday

a classic.

They don't make them like him anymore. How did this style of music ever become unpopular?

^^

i heard this album for the first time last week. one of the best things ever, surely?

Wholeheartedly agree

Fucking amazing record.

Great stuff reallly

My dad used to play him a lot when I was a kid. Him, the Clash and the Stones mainly. And various Motown.
