reet..so...
i were reading the creation records book by david cavenagh last night, and it came to this amazing chapter on my bloody valentine.
it was for the tour of the loveless album, just after they had almost bankrupt the label...
anyway...the sound...this is what im getting at...apparantly the sound was so unbelievably loud/powerful etc etc, at one ten minute period during the gigs that poeple would just go nuts, chests would hurt etc etc, people would have to leave, and apparantly it was called the apocalpyse
a US critic, mark kemp, said of it
'after about thirty seconds the adrenaline sets in, people are screaming and shaking their fists, after a minute you wonder whats going on, strobe lights are going mad and you begin to feel the throb in your chest, after another minute its total confusion, peoples faces take on a look of bewilderment, the noise starts hurting, the strobes start hurting, the noise continues, after three minutesyou begin to take deep breaths, som people in the audience stoop down into the crowd to cover their eyes and ears. anger takes over, a few people leave the room. after about four minutes a calm takes over. the noise continues. after five minutes a feeling of utter peace takes over..'
this sounds amazing...
soo what i was wondering
a) did anyone experience this at one of the M.B.V. gigs
and
b) has anyone experienced anything like this with another gig and another band.
?
called the holocaust...
...not apocalypse
idiot.
fuck that
Yep,
The Rollercoaster tour in Plymouth 1992. I wasn't into MBV at all. They ended with a 10 minute plus barrage of noise. Loads of people left including myself.
I had that throb in my chest
When Melvins began to play at Primavera last year, it was stupidly loud. None of the other, cooler sounding stuff mentioned above, happened to me - thumbs down.
Yes I did
The loudest thing I ever heard. You know how you go to gigs and remember fuck all about them, or even forgot you ever went. I can't forget this one. It's during 'You made me realise', there's a version on the bootleg 'Loom' live set, available on slsk and other illegal places. It's 17:38 long... Other bands, Mercury Rev at the Clapham Grand in '93, surround sound with fuck-off speakers at the back of the dance floor, playing 'Something for Joey' etc. Oh yes.
Good
thread dude!
That sounds extreme!
I just played that version all the way through
Had to put it on headphones after a few minutes for fears of scaring the neighbours. There's two occasions where the bootlegger appears to drop his dat or whatever and a section which sounds like they are slaughtering cows live on stage. Ah happy days. I saw them do it a few times actually, but the most intense was at Birmingham Institute in '91.
cool..
ill have to look out for this
has the roundhouse
been built to a spec that will withstand this shit?
With any luck,
No.
i havent experienced it
yet but im seeing them in Glasgow in July, there's no way they'll be able to play as loud as they used to in the nineties cos of environmental health laws on noise and whatever. That creation book is really good, especially the sections on MBV.
Didn't they
tour with Dinosaur Jr as well? People who attended those gigs surely are deaf now? I saw Dinosaur Jr in about 1993 (the second gig I ever went to) and I can clearly remember it as being the loudest gig I ever went to. My ears were ringing for 3 days afterwards.
Loud - very very loud...
I saw MBV on the Isn't Anything tour - 1989 - Portsmouth Poly - supported by Silverfish and the Sperm Wails (correct spelling I think:)
They played a version of You Made Me Realise that was so insanely loud it bust the PA. Literally just went zip and stopped emmiting anything. Band strumed on and on oblivous until suddenly PA kicked in again.
I stupidly (drunk and 17) had no ear plugs and was pretty near the front but left hand PA stack.
God they were good though...
I missed the Rolercoaster tour show in London as the band I was then in (this is 15 years ago... scary...) was supporting Come at the Camden Falcon...
And yes I am seriously partly deaf now. No shit. Tinnitus. My left ear is MUCH worse than my right.
Funnily enough stood next to Deb Goodge, Colm and Kevin Shields at Dinosaur Jrshow on Thursday.... and have tickets for Roundhouse. Will be taking ear plugs.
:(
i'd hate to get tinnitus.
i don't have tickets for the mbv glasgow shows either :(
I saw MBV back then
It was so fucking loud I couldn't hear for two weeks. Seriously, it was too loud. It just hurt.
I went to see Dino jr honestly, hadn't heard of MBV then.
I wear earplugs now. Always. Because of this show.
Nope
Loudest gig I can remember is Secret Machines a few years ago, but they didn't quite push ten minutes or more of solid noise.
And strobe lights for ten minutes?! There must be something about epilepsy these days as well?
the drummer in my band saw them in new york in the early 90s
he was leaning against a pillar or wall or something, and every time a certain bass note hit, he said it felt like an earthquake. He did at times genuinely worry a the roof would cave in or something.
i can't wait for next month.
