Being too old for certain music....

do you agree that this is right? I guess following on from the Girls & Music thread...
is music age specific?
For example, I really like Born Ruffians - I'm 27 next week. Someone my age told me last night that they thought they were "too old" for them.

Do you agree with this?

It cetainly doesn't work the other way round - like if you're into Led Zeppelin or fleetwood mac or the beatles at the age of 16 - you're just considered to have a bit of an old skool taste in music, non?

Opinions plz.

everyone is too old

for ska-punk

^5

It's an interesting question with no obvious answer.

It's all perspective, innit?

isn't everything

subjective? only asked for opinions - no definitive answer ;)

Oh MaryAnn..........

You're SOOOOOOOO contrary, I could grow to love you if you weren't so boring.

X X X x the Zimbabwean National Debt.

....

not sure if I've ever been described as boring AND neurotic AND a cokehead by the same person before this time. Conflicting feelings towards me, dear Alex? Or just confusion between IRL me and my internet 'persona', perhaps.
XXXxxxxxx!!!!11111

To be fair, your internet persona, whilst incredibly low calibre

..far exceeds the real world you.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXX

When did you

turn into klaire? And in all fairness, Alex,
*whispers*
<you don't really know the real world me>....but you clearly wish you did x

:O!

OMZGOSH!!!111 - i forgot to add:
You're still really bitter, aren't you?!
:O!

Fuck no! I know what you're like now :D

Anyway, you've been crabby lately, run out of DRUGZ?!!!11

....

ahh. Timing is perfect! Just enough minutes between posting to create a fake account, log into it, post a thread, log out and post on here as you again. Umm - no, not crabby. You're just fucking irritating.

ps -

my hair is like WELL shiny today...but I guess that's something that should go on the social board. So, you wanna continue DiSsing me, dearest - do so on there. Thanks.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're on about....

which thread am I being accused of creating under a fake guise?

I thought the fake accounts were your forte.

I've only had

one fake account, that being 'itjustcantbetrue'.

Hmmmm.........

MaryAnnItIs, LameCow...probably others too.

i think when you consider

people like ian mackaye/thurston moore/mike watt are in their 40's/50's and are/were members of some stupidly great bands, and still listen to great music, then i think the "old" thing goes out of the window. you should be able to listen to whatever music you want at whatever age and not get told you're too old/young for it.

i dont think there is a an age

category, but i think on an individual level you can grow out of a band.

i used to love feeder when i was a teenager. i still do like their first 2 albums a lot, and comfort in sound, but only ever listen to them occasionally as a nostalgia kick really.

some bands do tend to have younger audiences than others, but i dont think that in general you can be too old for a band unless you have just moved on. In 5 years time i might be back loving feeder with a genuine renewed passion, though music will have gotten really boring for that to happen...

^ this

my nostalgia bands being finch, funeral for a friend and the strokes. i am only 20 but i think i will love music and different bands regardles of my age as i get older.

I'm 53

Look in my profile, check it out.

I have always liked what I like, when I like. I feel a little out of place at gigs sometimes, but no one has come up to me and said look man you are too old to be at a Liars show, or scoffed at me so I could notice. Like whatever you can before you are dead. Most people let their music taste buds wither before they are 30. Tell your friend to lighten up, it is they who grow old too soon.

Ain't no rules for loving music

ok?

yes

unless you 11 years old and female, you should not be listening to paramore.

My son was listening to Nick Cave at 6 yrs. old

there are no age rules maybe moral propriety considerations and parental advisory considerations but for adults; I think it's silly to say you are too old for whatever you are liking and enjoying.

shit

the singer is hot.

do i get exempt?

haha - ok!

just to set the record straight though, my friend was only saying that they felt they themselves were too old for that type of music - and it's this that made me ponder! He didn't say "och, you're too old for them. you shouldn't be listening to them at your age"...sorry if that wasn't clear in the thread! Great advice, though - and i agree:)

i think it's mostly in your head.

if it's your own opinion that you're too old &etc.

true :)

I turned forty at a Beck gig

I'll probably drop dead at a gig.

I'm going to see Boris in July. I've got a Wolfmother shirt on right now.

Kids and olds are always asking me about music- what should I do? Give it up and settle down with dark side of the moon till they put me in a home?

Oh Emmi, you're such a girl.

I agree your tastes do change

You get too old for some music but you start appreciating music you were previously too young for.

i know what you're getting at

i think there are certain bands that are aimed at a teenage audience. i would definitely be too old for chart-friendly emo-lite (paramore being a good example, not that i particularly like them). i think this would be most evident at a gig, but like the guy above said, there are people in their 50s at most of the gigs i go to, and i don't think anyone regards it as odd!

yes, but -

that's because paramore are utter shite ;)

yeah they are

but they sell loads of records, mostly to teenagers. i guess that's my point really, that there are loads of "training bra" guitar bands out there who most people on here would consider rubbish but who sell loads of records and for some are a springboard onto better things!

Not really, but

I'm 27 now and scoff at the NME hype bands of today, which I didn't do a good few years ago.

some of the adolescent hype stuff starts to bleed through- that's ok

Not to worry, you are older and wiser. You just see thru the industry hoopla now. The trick is to be able to accept that youngsters can (on occaision) lead you to something new and exciting- it's a bit of a balancing act.

Just keep your ears and mind open- forever!

This is true...

I'm 31 and far more sceptical about passing trends and bandwagon jumpers. I definitely look for stuff with a bit more substance now.

You're never getting too old for any music

but sometimes your taste changes ( and sometimes not... )

i got really paranoid...

when i turned 21 in march

and listened to the jam non-stop for a week.

i thought that some sort of mystical voodoo type thing would take hold and stop their affect on me once i hit 21...
of course i was just being a massive idiot.
weller must have been older than 21 when he wrote the tunes anyway..

anyway...i know im not the oldest here at 21..but i relate this argument/topic to my unconditional love of the libertines when i was 15.
i think you can only really feel that way about a band when you are that age?
am i wrong?
thats why, even when i dont realy like bands like the enemy, courteenas, pidgeon detectives, the view etc etc,
i sort of think, there is probably some 15 year old that would die for that band, so sort of give them a bit of slack?
does this make any sort of sense what im trying to get at?
i think my point is...you may never be 'too old' for a band, but perhaps you can never feel the same way for a band as you did when you were 15/16/17.

but then that is quite a depressing thought

hmm...

I think that Weller was much younger than 21 when he was in The Jam. I think he was 17 when they had their first no.1.

That's bullshit actually.

I've been lied to.

you still can feel that way about music at 35

but not for a band like the Libertines... ( which doesn't mean you can't enjoy a band like that )

ppl think i'm too old for fall out boy

but we all know those people are twats

I'm getting too old for some things.

I'm 30 and I find Los Campesinos! annoyingly shite, childish and boring yet I probably would have lapped it up 10 years ago.

I also find I'm tending to discover the back catalogues of established bands rather than leaping on the next great thing.

Hadouken!

I'm eighteen and I still feel to old to listen to them.

Not that I would want to anyways :/

weller was...

20 for the release of all mod cons apparantly

fall out boy are too old for fall out boy

They are in their mid twenties right? They are named after a cartoon within a cartoon and wear silly get ups- I'll bet they don't feel too old to be DOING what they are doing so why should you feel too old to APPRECIATE what they are doing?

Unless the twats you speak of are f.o.b.?

I think people are confusing being too old for a band

with that band being shit.

-

I dont worry about it, Im 30 and just listen to what i find good, if people think im too old for it then thats not my problem, its just music. I dont follow trends now though like i did when i was about 15-16.

^ yeah

i think this is the crux

there is a difference between listening/liking etc etc

and being obsessed, which generally comes with youth

I just wasn't up to coming down on fall out boy

in THIS thread/context.

now, if it had been the "I Love F.O.B." thread.

When I was 14 I loved Sonic Youth and Joy Division

Now I'm 30 and I still love Sonic Youth and Joy Division - which means I've loved them for longer than I've not loved them which is cool.

I think my tastes have broadened a lot (when I was 14 I had about 10 bands I loved and everything else sucked) and now I listen to all sorts from ambient droney stuff to grindcore.

Anyway, in conclusion John Peel was about 60 when he died wasn't he?

50 this year

And at the Great Escape this weekend, just home for a bite then Pete And The Pirates tonight, We Are The Physics were awesome at lunchtime today.
It's the music not ageism

No age limits on music

In my opinion. I'm 13, almost 14, I like 70s/80s rock. I listen to Radar Love, American Pie, Blinded by the light ect. I also like Feeder, Blink 182, Greenday. And if you've heard of him Scroobius Pip. Quite a broad range of music tastes there for a teen methinks :p.

Basically, for me it comes down to whether or not it's a bloody good tune. If it is, I'll listen to it, regardless of when it was released or who it's target audience is.

(:

:)

These are the classic rubbish music tastes of a 13/14 year old.

Don't worry, it mostly gets better from there

Lol?

Rubbish music tastes?... What exactly is it you listen to?

Look it John Peel

Although he might have been off the mark every now and then, he was pretty much at the forefront of new and cutting edge music until he died. He was into it all- grime, metal, techno...

So, I really don't think age matters that much. Perhaps only if you let the bullshit of society (yehman!) dictate what you listen to...

Very Valid Point.

- i've not used that in yonks. But yes - that man's a legend - he truly, truly is x

I don't think

that it's an age thing, if you're 12 or 57, three people playing 'together' whilst so obviously, so far apart will always sound really really bad. What makes Born Ruffians enjoyable, period, (to any age group) is far more mystifying?

.....

is this a question...or a statement?!

When i was 15 i thought Miss Black America

were great. Someone said maybe it's an "age" thing. After not listening to them for about 5 years, i put the album on yesterday. For a couple of minutes. It turns out that person was right.

I used to think

that if the band were younger than me then it'd be a bit embarrassing, but then realised that's the stupidest thing I've ever thought of.

hahahha -

i have a deep appreciation for your 2am view on this issue....

-

i used to think this too, but now most new bands are younger than me so ive just had to get over it

Certain bands/genres are more typically suitable for different age/race/creed/blahblahblah

Sure there's an age thing. We've boy bands for youngsters. Muse for teenage boys...metal for morons...Michael McDonald for middle-aged dentists...Mozart for old people.

Someone's gonna say, "My gran listens to N'Synch" okay whatever. My marketing demographics don't lie!

.....

I listen to Mozart :(

I do think you can be too old to listen to certain kinds of music

I knew I has passed a certain milestone in my life when I looked at Nu Rave and came to the conclusion its for teens and uni students and I looked at it with utter disdain. Five years ago I might have embraced it as I did electroclash but I knew I was way to old to even attempt to be a part of that scene, wear the stupid t-shirts and wave glo sticks around.

I think that relates more to being part of a scene...

rather than listening to music on music's terms rather than the latest fad (if you get what that sentence means!).

For instance, people won't listen to Hadouken! and the Klaxons in five years cuz they're born from a fad and more importantly, their music reflects that... it's instant and empty.

Great music is timeless... that's a fact. That's why I love music so much. It transcends barriers of age, class, race, gender or whatever. It's uniting. It's why, at twenty, I love Beatles, Van Morrison and Smokey Robinson songs and probably why my ten year old brother constantly plays Beck's Odelay on repeat.

Music's the best man!

^agree with your last statement

great music transcends age, race, class. And for those reasons those artists you mentioned have audiences from all ages, races and creeds.

I dont think anyone is to old for

born ruffians... I think some people just get intermidated in discovering new stuff cos aparently thats what the kids do.

My mum loves alot of the random stuff I play her like Youthmovies and a DJ set of deranged house tunes from set at the scala by my mate.

So I think its more to do with the indervidual rather than age.

You shouldn't...

grow old gracefully with you're music taste. If you like something that a load of teenagers like, what's to stop you?

Nobody

will ever tell me what music to like or not to like. Ever.

Abasaloutly not

Born Ruffians are a hype band and as a resuly heavily associated with teenagers... if it werent for the NME hype I dont think the association would be made. Did you not see the crowd at ATP, all around your age!

I am 35

and like The Wombats.

Give a shit.
