For whatever reason DiS won't let me reply to topics. So I'll have to post my feedback on the Cardiff thread here:

First of all thanks everyone for replying, good to see that the majority of people love the place. Special thanks to Whiterussian who wrote me an essay which I have a feeling will come very much in handy, really helped me get a feel of the place before I've been, so thank you!

I'm doing Music Production @ UWIC, which will hopefully be fun.

I'll respond to some quotes from the thread now:

"The owner of the comic book store who wears a cape to work. "

This I HAVE to see.

"you moving to halls?"

Yes, I've applied for Plas Gwyn (or at least I think that's the name of it) in Llandaff.

"They were lovely, all shady and leafyness."

Sounds good.

Thanks again, obviously I won't be able to post again in the topic so I might PM a few of you.

you're quite welcome

and pm me any time if you have any more questions, not that i know EVERYTHING about cardiff, but still

I think whiterussian is my favourite newbie

She's lovely. Let's have a whiterussian appreciation thread.

whiterussian iz grate

she made me an ace mix cd
(which i have STILL not finished doing in return, but i'm working on it, honest!)

:O

:O

Does everyone like her?

Maybe if I start an "Anyone else hate whiterussian?" thread, in a couple of months, she'll do a Mirri/Vikram.

don't worry

there are some who don't like me, and the great majority is absolutely indifferent. it's a fact, i did a survey.

no worries,

and yeah send any questions you may have at me as well. lived there for almost 5 years so i'm pretty familiar with the place! also am familiar with llandaff because i went to Cardiff Uni and UWIC for separate courses.
smashing.

i've been to llandaff once

i walked along the taf trail and didn't find anywhere to turn back.

Ask away, Jook

I grew up in Cardiff and stayed on to do my journalism course there, so if you need any advice, PM away.

When the girl of my dreams moved to Cardiff

For uni, I went down to visit her not long after she'd moved into halls. We were going to head into town before a gig at the uni (JJ72, NME Tour, those were the days).

Jen: "twentynine and I are going to Walkabout if you want to meet us later"

Jen's flatmates: "Ok, guess we might bump into you in town then"

Me: "...?"

4 hours later...

Jen (on phone): "Aren't you coming?"

Them: "We've been walking about for hours and can't find you anywhere"

Me: "xD"

Not very exciting, but it always makes me smile. I love Cardiff.

I hate Walkabout

with a PASSION. But there are many reasons for this. I had an ok time there once, out of the three/four times I've been.

walkabout

is about as enticing a bar as tiger tiger.

need i say more.

i found oceana to be worse though

I went once (was already drunk by the time I went in) and it was only to meet a boy. Never again.

you actually went in there!

scary place.

i had to go to tiger tiger once for a staff night out.. well we were bar crawling so we didn't stay long. thank fuck for that. i was in the door for all of 5 minutes and i had 40-somethings pinching my arse and calling me names that only a builder with his bum-crack exposed is licensed to get away with.

there are some really shit bars in cardiff come to think of it. i've just managed to block them out of my peripheral vision for 4 or 5 years.

St Mary's Street is a horrible horrible place.

hahahah

charming. i've never been in tiger tiger at least, and don't plan to ever go.

also the guy i met in oceana was one of those who do it as an "ironic" thing, you know the type, it's not much better though.

oh yeah the whole it's 'cool' to go to 'shit' places trend..

that trend is gonna TAKE OFF. ha ha.. although actually alot of my male friends love to go to tacky places like that for a laugh.... hmm... maybe it's a boy thing.

i have a friend who worked there, but he found it too soul destroying and quit pretty sharp-ish.

also you met a boy in oceana?

surely this is a sign that this is not a boy you want to meet up with? ( me being snooty and judgemental :D )

Ergh, I hate Oceana with a passion...

...never been to the Cardiff one but I've been dragged to the one in Swansea and it was shit. The music was bad commercial hip hop and R & B, drinks ludicrously priced and the clientele were less than savoury too. It made me sad. As for St Mary's Street, it's like a giant version of Wind Street in Swansea only without Bar Co. the one decent bar on that entire street.

across the road from the new theatre

you know that place with the beer garden/smokers area with a black fence around it?

ooooh that place

it changes its name every 2 years it seems, maybe less. I think it's a tax scam.

yeah.. they spent £16million revamping it.

what a waste. yeah it's the one next to fat cats et al..

yeah feel free to ask questions

at your leisure, I've been here 10 years and love it, it really is a great City to live in..

^^ what he said

Been here 6 years now, it's changed a bit (guess i have too) but it's still such an awesome place to live.

guys,

we should totally go for a drink/gig sometime you know.

Times New Viking on Monday

It's going to be ace. Plus support from local brilliants Threatmantics.

I'll be there anyway, I look like I do in my profile pic that I deleted :-)

I'm broke until the 20th

so no gigging for me until then I'm afraid...

ooh def! i'll let you guys know when i'm back in cardiff.

but won't be til i finish my essays... so err. end of may :(

I am gutted to be missing TNV at clwb! i was meant to be back in cardiff by then :( sob.

end of may is good

as long as it's not the first weekend of june, then basically any time between the 20th of this month and 13th(ish) of June.

yeah i'm off to prague on 12th june

i should be back in cardiff for the clwb sleeveface party. can't remember the exact date of that though? second weekend of june?

it's on the 7th

that's the weekend i can't make it, as my sister is over at the time

oh shit.

i can't make that either. i am seeing Why? at Venn festival in bristol. balls.

cool :)

let me know, i'll try to pm people and find something we can do and stuff.

cool.

It's about time we started a cardiff meet up thingy ma woe! woop!

yep it is

i'm off out into the streets of cardiff right now, have a lovely evening all x

and yeah..

judging by the responses to this thread, there's actually a fair few diff folk on here.

also

have a look at this site i just found (they failed my test when i searched for milgi though, unimpressed)

http://www.ilovecf.com/

oooh cool! for a second there i though that was my mates site...

but this one: http://www.iheartcdf.co.uk/
is about to be launched in a couple of days by a few of my mates. (rich and ceri who both dj at barfly and 10feettall)

the one you suggested looks good! they've mentioned sleeveface! yay.

Sigh

This thread is at risk of making me feel very homesick.

Further to the advice in this thread so far, no one has given a list of the best pubs. So:

The Albany, Donald St - cheap, has decent beer and crisps. Has a fantastic wee beer garden out the back that seems to be soaked in sunlight throughout the summer. One of the bar staff has an amazing handlebar moustache.

The Roath Park - full of doddery old guys, but they are quite sweet in a non-horribly drunk way. Has a corner reserved for 'members of the blue rinse set'. And a Japanese Akita.

The Vulcan - may close soon, has good beer and a good atmosphere. Proper Kair-diff pub.

Y Mochyn Du and the Cayo Arms are also worth seeking out.

Now I AM homesick.

pubs/bars...

ahh the good old albany! my friend works there. And the dude with the 'tache, what a legend!
also would add:

Dempseys
The Rummer Tavern
Buffalo
Glo Bar
Pen & Wig
The Woody
Callaghan's

you missed all the Canton pubs!

The Butchers Arms - it's about as big as my living room and has a 'beer garden' about as big as a stamp.

Duke of Clarence - just an ace pub.

Chapter's not really a pub but that bar is amazing despite the rubbish last orders/drink up/kick out policy (that sequence happens within about 5 minutes)

ALSO Grinner, you missed The Goat Major, a lovely boozer where we watched a fellow Welshman throw his way into the Darts History Books.

God yes, the Goat!

I forgot... you see what Doha does to the mind? It's fizzy beer at £5.50 a pint here.

The Roath Park

is that the one on City Road? Corner of Kincraig Street? If so it will be my local after the summer :D

It might be called something else with Roath in it though.

i think the George is more popular

than the Roath Pub on city road. I don't think the one on city road is the Roath 'Park' though? is there another one somewhere maybe?

yeah actually

i think that one's the roath arms or something.

oh and

I went to Y Mochyn Du before Christmas with my Welsh class for carols and stuff, it was well nice

you know

ceri jones?

I forgot to mention

Swn Festival!

http://www.swnfest.com/

new cardiff based festival that takes place in november, gigs all around town. sadly i missed out on it last time, i have no idea why i didn't go, the cribs played on my birthday and all! definitely going this year.

swn was great last year :)

and it'll be even better this year, last year was a bit of a test run! My friend said they're trying to get Flight of the Conchords for this year! ahhh, i would actually die. :D

any idea who to get in touch with

if you want to threaten/bribe them into booking someone?

yeah i know a few of the peops who organize it.

who do you want them to book?
