Watched Magnolia last night in all it's 180minute glory (thank fuck for PAL speedup).

It surely gets better the more you watch it. An amazing movie but I never want to be anywhere that it rains frogs.

I've still not see Punchdrunk Love or There Will Be Blood. Is either of them as good or are they more on a level with Boogie Nights (which is good but, y'know, no Magnolia).

is there something im just not getting about magnolia

i watched it.the performances were excellent.i just didnt get it :(

Indeed: Magnolia is great.

There Will Be Blood = thumbs up

I have neither of the other films mentioned in the above, however i may go and add them to lovefilm

I definitely didn't get

Punchdrunk Love. Therefore I have decided it is a bad film.

I got bored while watching it.

Now, Southland Tales, that is a good film.*

*This is bollocks - it was crap.

See them both!

I think there will be blood is better though. Really nicely shot and quite gritty.

I do enjoy Magnolia a lot

but I prefer 'short cuts' the Altman film that it borrows all its ideas from.

Punch-Drunk Love is Anderson's best film by a million billion miles

Seriously, just buy it. There Will Be Blood is also good but reminded me of other films (The Shining par example) whereas t'other three feel like massively inspired, original films to me.

This

man is wise...not sure about The Shining bit though.

In a mind unrevaling in a grand location sort of way

Not a blood in a lift kind of way

Please

would you explain why you like it so much? (Punch Drunk Love). I promise I'm not being facetious, I just think I missed the point of the whole film so I'm willing to change my mind about it.

A lot of it is personal

Like with any film, or any piece of art even i guess. It just struck a chord with me about love, loss and the pros and cons of uncontrollable rage. And for all its lingering shots and colour cards I also think its one of the most perfectly-scripted, most beautiful films i've ever seen.

"I have a love in my life now. And it makes me stronger than anything you can imagine"

i still havent seen it the whole way through

tom cruise is becoming more and more like the character he plays in that

magnolia is absolutely brilliant.

all i seem to remember about it is the frog scene tho. i haven't watched it for quite a few years...

haven't seen the other two so can't comment on those.

boogie nights

is clearly his best - then magnolia. not bothered about the rest...

I dunno, the bit where they all start singing

is pretty vomit inducing.

.

punch drunk love is quite something. i really enjoyed it. and it's shorter

Boogie Nights...

....is AMAZING!!!

Magnolia & Boogie Nights suck IMO.

They both start incredibly well and then, at the half-way mark, just fall to pieces. PTA really hasnt got a clue where to take the material in those movies - particuarly Magnolia.
There will Be Blood is almost great though. If only he'd reeled it all in 45 minutes earlier. Thats his problem i think; he appears to be of the mindset where he thinks the longer the movie, the more seriously he'll be taken by the so-called film-critics. Snap out of it Paul!

I love Magnolia a whole lot

but I think Punch Drunk Love just steals it for me, the expressionism and playfulness are always evident, all the elements are really beautifully realised and some of the cinematography, while stripped back a little from the granduer of other Elswit/Anderson collaborations does an awful lot with that limited palette. The whole film is flat-out enjoyable without losing depth, it has genuine optimism. PTA has surely the most consistent catalogue in modern cinema so far

Also, liking

Adam Sandler is a unique feeling...and not hating that twat woman fom 24. Chloe?

Nonsense!

He's talents are questionable at this stage. If want a consistent CV, then go to David Cronenberg's. Its dispiriting that few DiSsers seem to ever mention him. Your missing out if you've stayed away so far.

*If you want

I liked a lot of Cronenberg

but there's a few films let down by uneven performances, or shaky production, that I think from the start P T Anderson has avoided. There's a great run of films in there though, and his films are always interesting

PTA only has four films to his name, doesn't he?

Five actually. There's that one Sydney that was renamed. I've not seen that either.

Anyway with that small a catalogue it's easier to be consistent.

I'd put Fincher above him. Even a turd like Alien³ is only as good as it is thanks to him. My SE of The Game is in the post. Yum!

Fincher's ok.

He's like a thinking mans Ridley Scott. 'Panic Room' was dire though.

I don't really get this reaction from Panic Room.

Yeah it's really massively set up and it relies on some seriously silly moments...but how is Fight Club any the more 'realistic'? And while Fight Club has amazing dialogue and stuff, it's not like Panic Room is wall to wall cliché. Personally I think it works immensely as a taught thriller in the style of Hitcock and has a visual style that really pays off.

Fight Club is original and very unpredictable.

Panic Room is the polar opposite and its completely undone by the Forest Whittaker character - not to mention his stereotypical gang. Its just too Hollywood.

Ah well fair enough.

Most complaints I hear about Panic Room are along the lines of 'That's not how gas would work in that room' etc. which seems to miss the entire point of the film.

I'm not sure Forrest Whittaker's character undoes it. His motivation is as clear as everyone else's, isn't it?
