Soul/R&B thread

Someone posted a thread a while back asking for good soul tracks. I downloaded some of them and the ones I liked the most were..

Doris Troy - Just One Look
Betty Everett - You're No Good
Sandi Sheldon - You're Gonna Make Me Love You

Anyone care to point me to any more because I've bought a whole bunch of soul/northern soul compilations and most of it is really not very good.

I'm pretty skilled in this field.

And I give you the best possible answer when I tell you to get the Mod Fave Raves CDs. They're £3 each and are FULL of absolutely essential r&b, soul, northern soul tracks.

Download something by The Contours.

And Needle In A Haystack by the Velvelettes.

Needle in a Haystack

spectacular shout.....just amazing.

The Dramatics - The Devil Is Dope

Curtis - Give It Up
Little Milton - Walking the Back Streets And Crying
The Meters - Stay Away

are my faves at the moment

last orders?

.

I do feel your pain by the way.

I've bought literally around 20 CDs looking for soul gems. Unfortunately, they tend to be full of reeeeeeeally boring shit.

As long as you have a few artists in your head, you should be ok though. You need to know what to look for. Groups like Contours, Velvelettes, Marvelettes, Supremes, Vandellas, Miracles etc. and you can't go wrong.

Never - repeat never - buy any "Northern Soul!" compliations. They're pretty much universally shit and no-one ever knows any of them because of it.

Atlantic soul is much more manly and much less dancey. But its easier to find good compilations of. Motown is a better label though for soul, I think.

Have you bought any of the complete Motown Singles compilations?

from volume 7 (1967) onwards it's phenomenal, barely a hint of filler.

In response to original poster get:
Otis Blue by Otis Redding has just been released, you can't go wrong with that.

James Brown live at the Apollo
Sam Cooke Live at Harlem Club
Marvin gaye What's Going On

All solid classics

yeah i don't think i'm into

a lot of that northern soul stuff, or a lot of the manly stuff. most of the stuff i seem to like seems to veer quite near what most people would call girl groups and R&B and that's not really soul.

i'm not really into "funk".

Some of my fave albums, plus their best tracks:

ANN PEEBLES - Hi Records Singles (Walk Away)
ARTHUR ALEXANDER - The Greatest (You're The Reason)
BOBBY BLAND - Two Steps From The Blues (I'm Not Ashamed)
DONNY HATHAWAY - Everything Is Everything (Voices Inside)
EDDIE FLOYD - Rare Stamps (Big Bird)
JAMES CARR - You've Got My Mind Messed Up (That's What I Want To Know)
LEE DORSEY - Definitive Collection (Gotta Find A Job)
OV WRIGHT - The Soul Of OV Wright (Ace Of Spades)
WILSON PICKETT - Very Best Of (Land Of 1000 Dances)
