Just stumbled on this, and I know this is essentially just me saying 'I disagree with this person's opinion' but...2/10?! And the rating is the least of it.

Somehow, before I even clicked this thread,

I knew it was going to be about the goddamn National.

Wow

I know people who don't 'get' Alligator, and everyone's entitled to their own opinions and all, but that seems like a disproportionate reaction to not liking an album.

Well,

I don't like the production on Alligator as much as on Boxer, the vocals are too hollow and distant... but it's still a classic. "Baby, We'll be Fine" is one of their best songs

"..the guts to put across"

I just find the National a little boring and don't feel inclined to get into them. But from reading that, it's a really scattered, badly written review.

skimmed it

too many "I"'s

Anyway, the main point is everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But by not 'getting' The National you lead a lesser life. Thats not necesserly one's fault. But it is one's loss.

2am pretentions are too high. Time for bed

pretty shit, especially....

"Dwelling on what to say about this album I found myself turning into one of them, hurling dishes across the room, knocking over stacks of CDs (making sure to crack all the cases), screaming at my fiancée as she tried to calm me down. I took our picture off the mantle and used the bottom of my Smirnoff bottle to smash it to pieces. I ran the broken glass over my hands while she dashed to the stereo and knocked it to the ground."

what sort of an unstable bastard is this cunt

Pretty dull MOR stuff

the singer has a deep voice.

Sorry but what does MOR stand for.

I have never found this out?

i think its

middle of the road?

Mainstream Orientated Rock

I bought Alligator on the strength of hearing 'About Today', cause I couldn't find the album that track was on and was disappointed. That review was drivel though, some desparate attempt at self-aggrandisement at the expense of actual criticism.

It's the american style

local college papers do this- turn out some pretentious shit in the style of the NY Times and pass themselves off as classy. It's tiresome, and loads of otherwise decent papers and websites do it. Makes Pitchfork look like a model of clarity.

i was hoping this was going to be

someone posting that johnny foreigner review tom whyman did, just for irony and making sure everything is even once again

...

I agree in that the reviewer manages not to mention what the music actually sounds like even once.

But that may be because the music is such weedy, wet, derivative horseshit, that it's not even worth mentioning.

I found some of the bits of the first paragraph

to be interesting and well written. Then I realised that those bits were quoting from the lyrics....

Bad music, bland music doesn't provoke much of a reaction beyond 'meh'. I imagine Agoraphobic Nosebleed would love to have a listener smash the room up after listening to their music - it shows the music has really affected you surely?

I just

wouldn't trust a review from a website called 'pop matters' lol.

Pretty awful, I had know idea what he was talking about in the third paragraph.

LEARN TO REPLY IN THE RIGHT PLACE PLZ

This is the second time today someone's done this to me.

Lol

its sad that this bothers you so much.

Pop Matters

sometimes has its weird moments

It's just a review

don't worry about it
