They were good, but they do only have one great track (Atlas) and some very forgettable ones. Great to watch though - they dare to look like their REALLY, enjoying themselves.
Dirty Projectors = Fiddly-widdly guitars, nauseating pitch-perfect harmonies and 'edgy' sonic youth wannabe moments for EVERY FUCKING SONG!!! Muso-wankers!
and Fuck Buttons can fuck right off!
Gig rating 6/10.

Dirty Projectors were

amazing, Battles were alright.

Thanks, bye.

Yes, they were "amazing".

They were amazing because they played a song with the exact same formula 10 times for 40 minutes, and 2 thirds of the audience went ballistic for it. Now thats an achievement!

Not the best

Have seen Battles better - it was a bit indulgent sometimes, they seemed to have two new irritating modes. Mode one: play everything dramatically faster for supposedly increased intensity. Mode 2 - noodle around at the tipping point into muso-dom.
Judging by the crowd, they're going to find Atlas a complete albatross for the rest of their career.
Good t-shirts, though...

Was the sound decent downstairs?

I was upstairs (for the first time in years) and it sounded a bit pish.

The sound was great downstairs

At least compared to Scala, Koko, Electric Ballroom and the other mid-sized venues I've been to recently.

When is the Astoria closing?

I really liked Dirty Projectors

Thought they trailed off a bit during the last few songs, but up til that point I was pretty much engrossed

Battles were Battles. You know what you're gonna get with them. Still solid and enjoyable though. I remember how amazed I was the first time I saw them at the Scala a while back. I was completely blown away. Also, I'll pay somebody a thousand pounds to lick the drummer's shirt next time he finishes a gig

Fuck Buttons were pretty shit, I thought. I'm not a fan of noise stuff at the best of times, but even when they were adding beats to it it sounded pretty amateurish, I thought. When the two of them were 'losing themselves' in it I was surrounded by a lot of pretty indifferent faces

"Lick the drummers shirt"!

On last nights evidence you'd drown!

I thought

Fuck buttons were well good.
Dirty Projectors were awfully dull.
Battles were great.
Saw Bjork in the girls loo.

Kieran Hebden was there too

Sat upstairs

Battles- Better than the Koko

Nowhere near as good as the Scala. Dirty Projectors started off badly but became increasingly more impressive, rather enjoyed Fuckbuttons too.

Dirty Projectors are literally

AMAZING

It's rare to have such a good guitarist/singer in a band, yet either side you have the best backing vocalists, like, ever.

I agree the "noise" moments aren't the best, but the thing that's great about them is the dynamics, the way it's not the same thing the whole way through a song, it's constantly shifting. It makes the melodic moments seem much more beautiful

Pretension alert: I daresay it's what I like about Bartok so much

I couldn't take much of Battles in after DP to be honest, they are that good

P.S how come Fuck Buttons get to share the stage with such legends? what a load of cack that I could knock up in five minutes on garageband

didnt stay for battles

went and saw crystal castles next door.

fuck buttons were awesome in my opinion, not quite as good as the ICA set but still really impressed as usual.

wasnt that impressed with dirty projectors at first, but by the end of the set i was loving them.

This:

Fuck Buttons were excellent and seem to get better at what they do every time I see them. Oddly enough they had the best sound of the evening.

Dirty Projectors were good, but not as good as last Friday at the Dome. In order to appreciate them fully you have to be be able to hear both the vocals and the guitars crystal clear and it sounded a bit muffled at times last night. Still, a fantastic band regardless.

I really enjoyed Battles, in particular the indulgent 'muso' bits. John Stanier seemed to be completely lost in his own world, at one point one of the others had to pat him on the back to indicate it was time to move the song on a bit. But yes, once they stop playing Atlas live, half of their audience will probably abandon them ...

Fuck Buttons

were good but i enjoyed them more at atp in dec.
Dirty Projectors were not my cup of tea at all.
Battles were great, they seemed to be having fun, i didn't mind the slight noodling and extending of bits.
Can't wait to see them at the weekend

by the way

why do Battles all dress like merchant bankers?

Is it a knowing concept or something?

The guy on the left had that proper city-boy shirt on... blue-body with white collar and cuffs

good lookin'

Im sorry I missed

Fuck Buttons again. One Day.

Dirty Projectors, I have decided, are my New Favourite Band. Man, I like listening to them so much.

I only have Rise Above though. What are the previous albums like?

Battles I could have taken or left tbh.

have a listen to the New Attitude EP

The stuff before then (getty address etc) is not that similar to the direction they seem to be going in now

thank you

for the daytrotter link.

New Attitude EP it is then. cheers.

I agree with..

like_the_sun, did not get the Dirty Projectors at all - i didn't think they were really bad or anything but it just didn't really hold my attention (i will remain open minded, as I'm sure i'll be proved wrong) but was quite underwhelmed by them.

Battles were amazing as usual - who cares what they're wearing when they make music as fucking good as that!!

Can't wait to seem them again this weekend!!

Battles + ATP = Twice

!!!!!!!!!!

'why do Battles all dress like merchant bankers?'

prob. because they don't give a shit about the prevailing fashiondom in music...something a good portion of londons so called indie bands would do well to heed...more chords, less clashing ironic 80's flourescence please.

the

blue shirted guy was FIT.

Battles

Anyone know what the first song after the encore was that they played? I haven't heard it before. The one with the prominent low riding bass groove. Was it new?

^

Hi/Lo

Battles...

were great - the first encore song was probaby my fave...dirty projectors were good for about 1 and 1/2 songs during the middle i was baying for them to leave by the time they finished - to think these guys subbed in for Liars...

also I thought the girls were shite backing vocalists esp. after seeing the backing vocals at ASMZ the other week.

I

played my mate the third track off the Battles album the other day and he said it sounded like The Teletubbies experimenting with different styles and time signatures.

My review

Battles - good, but not great. Liked the way they really got into it on stage, just wish they had a few more outstanding tracks.
Dirty Projectors - liked it at first, but got sick of it really quickly as every song was so similar and followed the same structure.
F**k Buttons - I just found them extremely frustrating, the tracks build up (very slowly) but just never go anywhere. Slowed down dance music for indie geeks.

I enjoyed aspects of all the bands, but none totally satisfied me.

Battles...

definitely satisfied me. I want to marry them and their extremely high highat.

Highat..

its our pet name.. or something...

It's a crash cymbal.

But I wish it was a high hat.

dirty projectors were ok-ish

but the girl's harmonies annoyed me. now glad i gave them a miss at atp.

missed fuck buttons because they were on ridiculously early.

Battles were brilliant.

And the venue was positively cool after the sweat pit that was atp.

my two cents:

fuck buttons were great, not as good as their ica gig but very much enjoyed them all the same. i found it best to be towards the front and totally immersed. got a bit distracted by my late-coming friend, which was annoying.

dirty projectors - didn't know what to expect after mixed reports, but thoroughly enjoyed them until about 2/3 through when i found myself getting increasingly bored with their set. it picked up again at the end though. i liked a lot of what they were doing though i thought they were a bit self-indulgent at times.

battles were ace, and i'm so glad to have finally seen them. agreed that atlas will turn into a total albatross for them, which is a shame. got quite sweaty at floor level as well as on stage.

I like Battles but...

I remember one of them writing a piece about the Strokes- Is This It for some 'Most Overrated Albums' feature. Fair enough if you don't like the album (cloth-eared?) but the piece basically consisted of; they're rich, they're good-looking, they wear nice clothes, I hate them. Barely mentioned the album and tasted a incy wincy bit bitter.

I just found....

that overrated album feature...the dude from the Kooks suggests Pet Sounds which IMO is a fair call...but I still have to disagree with him because hes in the Kooks...

heres the piece if yr interested:

here's what Ian Williams said...

about the Strokes and I actually agree with the bit about Gucci and rebellion and the new form of hair metal (albeit disfunctional side-parts as opposed to premium mullets)...I still think Is This It is a pretty decent album though...unfortunately spawned a lot of shite...anyhoo off topic enough for ye.

The Strokes, Is This It
Nominated by Ian Williams of Battles

The Strokes were just rich kids from uptown New York; the children of the heads of supermodel agencies who formed a rock band and thought they deserved respect because of that. Suddenly the downtown, older form of punk rock got co-opted by the system. If ever there was a point where Gucci and rebellion were married together, it was right there. The Strokes have, basically, been responsible for five or six years of a new form of hair metal, in the guise of something more tasteful. Their music is post-9/11 party music because it came out that week and everybody wanted to dance. They're seen as the rebirth of rock in the UK - but it's a very conservative, old-fashioned idea of rock for the 21st century. As for their punk credentials, I'm not going to say anyone's more authentic than anyone else ... But the Strokes are the new Duran Duran; the new decadence for the new millennium.

would you say

that those who liked DP weren't so keen on Battles and vice versa?

...and would that be because Battles are MOR and DP are unusual/interesting?

Ahh, Im only messing. Don't get angry. :)
