What do you think the best cover ever is?

In my opinion it is Superstar by Sonic Youth.

"Hallelujah" by John Cale

If anyone suggests Jeff Buckley's version I will rape them with a spade.

never would have guessed!

you wrote that ;-)

Obsessed? Moi?

I'm getting counselling. It's a slow process, but I'm hopeful. Soon I will be a well adjusted member of indie-muso society again, able to rub my chin and say "Hmmm. Of course, that's your opinion. Let's listen to the Bono version."

Until then: the spade!

I don't want to be raped!

I will obtain the John Cale version before passing true judgement (freely admit I haven't heard it so I'll get hold of it now), but the Jeff Buckley version is astonishing. Wainright's version is ok, but not as good as Jeff's. So, so beautiful

I prefer John Cale's version as well

Rufus Wainwright's version tries to copy this, poorly. And you really don't want to hear Bob Dylan's live version of it from the 80's.

That is truly shocking

Have you heard Bono's version? he does some weird spoken word thing over a cheap Euro-synth beat, with some waily woman doing the chorus.

Fucking dreadful, but should be heard once for sheer "WTF?" factor.

I'd forgotten about that

That was on a Leonard Cohen tribute album right? Think I listened to a minute of it in a Tower Records once and then tore off the headphones in disgust.

There's a one-take live video of Jef Buckley doing Hallelujah floating around, appeared on my Virgin Media on-demand of all places the other week.

Excellent

Another reason to hate Richard Branson.

It's horrendous.

Truly, truly horrendous. Some of the other stuff on that tribute album is pretty good though, Famous Blue Raincoat by Tori Amos for one.

Yeah

But there was a better cover album - "I'm Your Fan" - which has got John Cale on it. It's also got REM doing "First We Take Manhattan", which is bloody brilliant, and Nick Cave and Bad Seeds doing "Tower of Song", which is funny.

And a weird Frenchman whose name I forget.

And the Pixies!

'tis the best.

ever ever?

my sharona by number 12 looks like you.no joking but its good

Heard it through the grapevine

The Slits

Oh Yeah!

Amazing version...

that song

but by Creedence Clearwater Revival

yeah,

very possibly this. a total tune.

Obvious but true

Jimi Hendrix - All along the Watchtower or pixies - winterlong

yes..

i agree hendrix's all along the watchtower

WRONG

XTC's version does a wee-wee all over Hendrix.

Sisters Of Mercy's cover of Hot Chocolate's 'Emma' for me.

or tATu's How Soon Is Now? for sheer 'irk the purists' value.

Tricky's cover of Black Steel

(in the Hour of Chaos) by Public Enemy was good. Probably not the best ever, but outstanding because musically it was absolutely nothing like the original.

Botch's cover

of Rock lobster

or the mountain goats' cover of the boys are back in town/Ignition remix

the raincoats

lola gets my vote.

sonic youth

no part 2

ummm

maybe Galaxie 500's cover of 'Ceremony', thats pretty decent

^

Yes, that is a beauty.

Oh yes

That is an absolute cracker. Although it's not slow enough.
I've always thought that Ceremony should be the slowest song ever. Nobody's done it justice yet ;)

Feeling Good by Muse

Love it, so good live as well. Anyone seen that video of this on youtube when they performed it drunk on German Radio? Matt just crouches behind the piano repeating the word "fucking" over and over again... Very, very funny.

pffft

Feeling Good - By Quantic Soul Orchestra!

Kiss Kiss - Holly Valance

Elouise - THE DAMNED
Lay Lady Lay - MINISTRY

Kiss kiss

is a very very good shout.

I hope it was meant with deep-founded sincerity.

"blue monday"

as covered by swan lee

I think you mean Blue Monday

as covered by ORGY!

FUCK YEAH!

hahaha

you totally figured me out! ;)

Blue Monday

as covered by HangedUp.

Just insane drumming and a viola playing the melody. Superb track.

Gin and Juice

By the Gourds
or
To Love Somebody by Gallon Drunk
or
If you think I'm sexy by Revolting Cocks

Not take pisses, but genuine love for the songs. Except the Revolting Cocks.

cap'n jazz - take on me

though the original amazing as well
possibly best song of all time

The answer is

'Satisfaction' by Devo.

Get Into The Groovy

by Ciccone Youth. Or Mr Pharmacist by The Fall. Or Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Hound of Love by Futureheads is surprisingly decent too. Controversially, I really like Wonderwall by Mike Flowers Pops.

The worst cover version by a long way for me, even worse than Love Will Tear Us Apart by Paul Young was Feel The Need In Me by Shaky. Jesus.

Wonderwall

Ryan Adams makes it bearable. Great cover

Brown Sugar

He does a really good piano led version of the Stones' Brown Sugar too. totally different from the original, quite melancholy.

Seconding the Ryan Adams cover

and adding "Nobody Does It Better" by Radiohead and "Wicked Game" by Giant Drag

Come to Daddy

Dillinger Escape Plan.

Interesting fact: DEP have done an EP of (very faithful) cover versions of 'mainstream' songs that is availble only on itunes.

hang on

has no-one mentioned any Cat Power yet? She's done fab versions of so many songs. Personal highlights: Satisfaction and Bathysphere

fucked up

do good versions of justice's "stress" and kelly clarkson's "since you've been gone".

nick cave's cover of "in the ghetto" is howling and heart-wrenching. and his cover of leonard cohen's "avalanche" is pretty fucking creepy.

LITHIUM

As covered by The Polyphonic Spree. Like all great covers, it sounds nothing like the original but you still know what song it is.

and one of the best covers ever must be

blondie's "hanging on the telephone".

the nerves did the original

educate yo'self!

Throwdown

Baby's Got Back!

Elliott Smith

Because

hahahahaha

I've heard that, it's erm...interesting.

Spacemen 3

When Tomorrow Hits

Otis Redding - Change Gonna Come
The Cramps - Green Fuzz

Lost in Music

By the Fall - a NW reworking of the Sister Sledge classic

and if this is sacrelidge I do apologise but I think Bryan Ferry's version of jealous Guy knocks Lennon's into a tin hat.

my favourite covers would be:

Ciccone Youth - Into the Groovey
Big Black - The Model
Yo La Tengo - You can Have it All

The Model by Big Black

One of those rare occasions where I kind of prefer it to the original. Sacriledge, I know..sorry Kraftwerk

Otis Redding sings "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"

It's on the just-reissued Otis Blue, and it is sodding AMAZING!
