i decided to pinch a couple of their albums from the internets last night, am i going to like them? why should i like them? they sound like 2 chord fuzzed up lo-fi with 1970s solos. will they be mega great live, and should i persevere?

They have a stegosaurus

who plays the drums.

<3

and a Tyrannosaurus Rex

who plays the milk carton ukulele.

very much depends on which albums you stole

and what you like. There's a big difference between the early DJ stuff (which is more like you describe) and the later stuff which is much better produced and a bit more 'country' in places.

If you don't mind lo fi scuzz then persevere with 'you're living all over me' until you get it. If not then try 'Where you been'. If you don't like guitar solos and nasal vocals then give up now.

i stole 'you're living all over me'

and beyond, to try to cover my bases a bit. i like the vocals, i can see their influence on Nirvana, i guess i just need to hear it louder maybe?

yes indeed. Turn up 'little furry things'

to THE EXTREME.

or something.

They have a bunch of great songs

but I've never really got into them massively. Are you a big fan of Smashing Pumpkins? To me both bands have an issue with over-pompous guitar soloing and such.

i used to love the first three pumpkins albums

but i don't listen so much anymore. i like it when Dinosaur Jr play sngs, but there is a heck of a load of widdle widdle widdle, which for the most part doesn't lend much. i like this 'show me the way song'

I think Forget the Swan is my favourite

Though In A Jar is cool too. Whatever's Cool With Me is good as well.

PLEASE don't mention

Smashing Pumpkins in the same breathe as Dinosaur. For the love of God! Aside from them both being from the USA, making music in the same century and using guitars, bass and drums WTF have they got in common?!! Nothing I tell you! Nothing
Show Me The Way is a cover of a Peter Frampton song (Google him).
Dinosaur and J Mascis are truly godheads. Smashing Pumpkins were simply in the right place at the right time and rode the 'grunge' coat-tails for a wee while and then went back to their first true love - over blown, pompous goth metal garbage.
Listen to Your Living All Over Me, Dinosaur, Bug, Where You Been, Green Mind and yes Beyond too:)
thanks

Is BUG not ment tobe the definitive album??

I thought it was pretty mediocore!!

Is there something wrong with me??

no!

You're living all over me wees all over it from a great height.

Frampton comes alive!

That song was stuck in my head for almost an entire ATP once (an officially recognised unit of indie time).

I Know You're Out There is a great tune as well.

why don't you listen to them,

then form an opinion ? controversial as that might seem..

Whats not to like

about a band that now look like Jimmy Saville, Paul Gadd and Lou Barlow, that solo endlessly.

Roll on the weekend!

why don't you read the post above you

for an informed state of play? controversial as that might seem..

I'm going to see them on Thursday

at Koko. You should come and check them out.

It's the LOUDEST live music ever (or it was at Mean Fiddler) and the guitar is immense.

well i'm hoping to be at ATP,

so i'm trying to decide if i should see them there

Yes you should

definitely. definitely. I don't care who they clash with.

No I don't think you are meant to like them

please stop listening now

What's wrong

with a bit of widdle widdle??!!

nothing, to an extent

but it sometimes gets a bit much, when it doesn't really have a meody or is listenined to quietly

Why?

would you ask people in a forum. who cares what anyone else thinks. listen to the band.

I love dinosaur jr

I have probably listened to more dinosaur jr in my life than any other band, I can see how they might not seem like anything special (mainly because so many have ripped them off)but if you can relate to J's perma-teenage crippilingly socially anxious slacker personality his songs provide much comfort, and whilst I don't normally care for guitar solos I think J's are special especially on ylaom it seems like he wrenching something painful from with in and its more expressive than most bands lyrics

You're Living All Over Me is the best album of all time

the rest aren't so great. But you could make a cracking 12 track best of from the other albums.

If you watch them at ATP

get right up front close to J Mascis for a true lesson in guitar playing.

I think there was a thread recently about ridiculously talented musicians, well J would fit in that for sure.

J Mascis is just good at anything he does

do you know he does/did ski at almost professional level?
For all his slacker personality (slacker is something he pretty much invented) he puts a lot of practive into stuff.

dinosaur jr are my favourite band of all time

and 'you're living all over me' is the best album ever. i'd check out 'where you been?' as well, if i were you. that's pretty cracking. i don't wanna blah on too much, because it'll just be like "OMG! THEY'RE SOOOOOOO GREAT! OMG! BEST BAND EVAR!" and that.

oh yeah, and you sound like you're saying

"they sound like 2 chord fuzzed up lo-fi with 1970s solos" as if it's a bad thing. that's what i love most about them...

haha perfect

thats exactly what I look for in a band

i'm downloading "bug" as i type

after realising that i'd never heard dinosaur jr in my life, bar collapsing in front of their set on the main stage at leeds festival a few years ago.
