I used

to work in a record shop,

but it closed down :(

Also

be obscure as you can with your CD selections,

veer away from the top 40, your never going to beat the price of tesco etc,

sell seven inch singles, not CD's and be passionate about what your selling.

I suppose this is all common sense really.

Lol

I didnt really answer you question.

congratulations

you win the indiest answer award

Yeah

if you want to bankrupt yourself.

:D

you crack me up

Watch High Fidelity

then do the exact opposite.

Love that movie

I am watching it right now thats what has lead me to start this thread lol.

The soundtrack is just great in that movie one of the best.

you fail

whilst its a challenging time for record shops

i agree with wecancreate's advice. Go obscure or niche as you can. Top 40, mainstream indie, classic rock, etc are not the way to go. Its about finding a massive niche gap and providing a service no one else can. Good luck, it's not going to be easy. Sorry can't be much help beyond that.

open a restaurant instead

or better yet

a cartographers ink emporium#

two words

1. e
2. bay

there are no attics, laden with treasure

there is only ebay

I worked in a record shop as well

and that also went down the pan

Something about "long tail" graphs,

and selling very few of many things rather than very many of few things. Or something. Basically, the whole niche market. There is some excellent essay about how the music industry is all going that way, but I just had a quick search and couldn't find it. It's out there somewhere...

The Long Tail

is basically the key to successful internet retail, or at least thats my understanding of it.

Rather than focusing on the 2% of hugely popular items (e.g. Harry Potter to give an obvious examlpe), concentrate on providing a large array of niche items, which ultimately is much much larger than the immediately popular stuff.

Hard to do though.

Call in Empire Records

then you will win.

I dunno

getting them in to help you might be a good idea?

not that I have any experience in record shops

but to me, considering the state of the music industry, it seems that you'd have less chance of getting fucked in the ass by the general public working as a prostitute.

But then I know nothing. Good luck.

I'm going to

open a video shop, specialising in betamax, lets see who lasts the longest.

DO

IT

itll be just like highfidelity

I am retail property consultant

(yes I know I sound like a cunt)

Dont do it, it will fail.

I will send an invoice for my report later.

I too worked in

a record shop and after a couple of years the owner had to shut it down. We stocked alot of stuff that was difficult to find and catered to all tastes and did have quite alot of regular customers who would always buy their new records from us but that wasn't really enough to keep the shop afloat. Some days when I worked there we didn't even make enough money for me get paid.
