I never really got that into Dinosaur jr's studio version, especially lou's vocal bits. I do love the way dinosaur play it live though. But the cure version's plays like a dream right the way through.
If a song was perfect it couldn't be improved on, and surely the point of being in a band is to make music as close as possible to, in your opinion, perfect.
Everyone disagrees on what the perfect song is, so there's at least 6 billion possibilities. And then people's opinions change from second to second, and so you need to multiply ... BIG NUMBER!
Mind you, if I'd written Billie Jean, I'd have retired. Shame Jacko didn't.
perfection is subjective anyway.
But if someone feels a song is perfect then it gives everyone else something to endeavour to. It doesn't mean everyone hould quit and listen to that song over and over again.
up the junction by squeeze or last caress by the misfits. two of my biggest obessions, so maybe a little bias, but in terms of setting melodies to chords, they're both outstanding.
the other day that Trading On Past Treasures by Held By Hands is almost ridiculously perfectly formed.
Also, Monkey by Low is absolutely untouchably good. Everything about it, from that drone at the start to the precise harmonies, is perfection.
And Unfinished by Mineral. The entire feel of the song is spinetingling and it basically perfects the whole build-up/cathartic-release thing. The bit where the guitars get massive near the end is so powerful it almost hurts.

you start the thread with an average post rock band?
oy vey! I nominate:
Beat It - Michael Jackson
You suck
I'm actually tempted to add at least one of the other songs on Enjoy Eternal Bliss to the list.
Theyre far from average in my eyes also.
But hoy hoy.
Beat it is good, but perfect?
It's only like the best pop song evarrr.
I think you'll find that
that's actually Adam and the Ants Prince Charming
oh vey! jackson 5 "a b c" crushes "beat it"
+ pop is too big of a universe for "beat it" to be it's brightest star.
sorry
but if it works for you, that's cool
^ this
But then again what song off Thriller isn't perfect?!

On Comely by Neutral Milk Hotel
Perfection is difficult. Eight minutes of perfection is really difficult. But here it just sounds effortless ...
A man at the peak of his powers. Shame he fell off.
That'll be "Oh" rather than "On" there ...
Song = perfect; spelling = less so.

the perfect song
does not exist
and life would be boring if it did
I disagree
Surely if the perfect song existed, there would be no point in making music anymore.
If a song was perfect it couldn't be improved on, and surely the point of being in a band is to make music as close as possible to, in your opinion, perfect.
Fortunately
Everyone disagrees on what the perfect song is, so there's at least 6 billion possibilities. And then people's opinions change from second to second, and so you need to multiply ... BIG NUMBER!
Mind you, if I'd written Billie Jean, I'd have retired. Shame Jacko didn't.

i'm going either
up the junction by squeeze or last caress by the misfits. two of my biggest obessions, so maybe a little bias, but in terms of setting melodies to chords, they're both outstanding.

Piazza New York Catcher is also excellent but a bit B&S-by-numbers.
This Is The Shirt
by Two People
i was thinking
the other day that Trading On Past Treasures by Held By Hands is almost ridiculously perfectly formed.
