From supersonic's Singing thread ... and me thinking about the great voices of rock 'n roll of yesteryear. Rod Stewart had a great r'n r voice, and so on.
Indie is different. Seems to me we could sum up indie rock as great music with dodgy vocals.
Uhm, I got more to say on the matter (eg this is why the mainstream will never fully adopt us), but since I already know what *I* think, let's let you guys (yep!) DiScuss...
bit of an obvious one i guess---
but jeff mangum is certainly memorable, the vocal (one take?) on oh comely is one of the incredible pieces of singing i have ever ever heard.
also liz fraser, guy from sigur ros.
as far as more traditionally 'acomplished' singers in indie---tv on the radio?, thom york? beth gibbons?
That Bjork lass can hold a tune

fatal omission.
Roddy Woomble

Jarvis Cocker

Black Francis

Loads of bands with distinctive vocals could be mentioned.

I get moaned at in reviews for singing well. Stupid indie rules.
I can confirm you sing well
...
Steven Merritt
terrible (technically) singing voice but great songs.
Others who have memorable voices that I really like: the guy out of brakes, Joanna Newsom, Elanor Freidburg (fiery furnaces) and Kim and Kelley Deal.
...
Lyndon Morgans from Songdog.
Dale Grundle from the Sleeping Years.
Not sure they're indie.
Spencer Krug
Joanna Newsom
Jeff Mangum
etc.
Jaime Harding
A good looking lad with a great set of pipes.
The guy from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
David Berman
Stephen Malkmus
are memorable.
Liam Gallagher,

you cant forget carey mercer outta frog eyes in a hurry
Kevin Barnes
Patrick Wolf
Jeff Mangum
Fleet Foxes in general
