...are the bane of existence.
I was all geared up and excited to see Yoooofmovies and Let's Wrestle tonight at Proud Gallaries in Camden, it being my last night out for a while with exams and all. But the organisers finally decided to email back and affirm that it is 'strictly over-18s' despite the fact that it says no where on website or flyer.
I'm pretty disappointed as you can tell, especially as it was only a fiver for such great bands.
But it's not a one-off either, it's happened to me all to often in last month (including already once with Youthmovies). I've missed out seeing: Johnny Foreigner, LC! (4 London dates NONE of which are under 19), DANANANANAYKROYD, Chromeo,Holy Fuck... and more.
I know most people's attitude is 'GOOD, FAAACKING SKINS-TEENAGERS RUIN MY GIGS' but that's just terribly elitist.
Anyone else have any bad experiences/disappointments due to 18+ gigs?
oh grow up
...
tee
hee
I love vinyl too
Lets be friends!!!
;D
Should have saw that coming.
When I went to Holy Fuck
the girls who were going into We Are Scientists nearby never got in because they had no ID.
"I'm 23!"
Bouncer "The only time you've seen 23 was in your bed!"
or something.
it's odd
because when I was growing up, all gigs were 18+ but the venues never ever seemed to care when there was a group of young teenagers. I think I went to my first 18+ gig when I was 13 at Nottingham Rock City. Never got IDed.
Yeah, I saw Franz Ferdinand when I was 14 at an 18+ gig,
and I wan't IDed.
Vinyl - You should just go, if it's only a fiver to get in, you're not wasting too much money if you don't get in, at least give it a go.
I didn't get ID'd by the bouncers for that gig
Im 17. Also, we just dandered down into the mandela hall, cos The doors werent open yet and watched the support act. We could have stayed and watched the whole WAS gig, but I wanted to see ASIWYFA. What did you think of the gig?
It was great
ASIWYFA were again flawless and Holy Fuck lived up to expectations!
ASIWYFA are plaing in stiff sometime.
Not sure when. I thought 'lovely allen was literally the best thing I've heard live. That doesnt say much though, Ive not been to many gigs! I was annoyed I couldnt go to Johnny Foreigner on sunday, it was a JD set gig, meaning 2 free shots of JD!
*playing
clearly
I COULDNT SEE YOUTHMOVIES AND ROLO TOMASSI
at the cooler in briz cos i was underage
it was shit.
but then we sat in yoofmovies van and chatted with them for a bit.
it made it all better.
I've been
getting in to 18+ gigs now for 4 years... and i'm 19 right now - maths suggests I was getting in underage.
which I was - didn't buy tickets in advance just in case, but never really had any problems.
just try and look normal!
That's alright for you
you're a 9'7" model!
you've got to learn the skill of blagging your way n
by looking nonchalant, like 'why would you id me?'. or you could just get a fake one.
as above, i managed to get in 18+ venues since i was 14. may as well give it a go :)
i thought i had the skill masterd
since i go to clubs all the time , buy alcohol and cigarettes
damn fat old bouncers
Not too bad in London
I remember going to the Mean Fiddler/Astoria 2 for Blood brothers 3 days after my 18th and being IDed for the first time there, if only they knew....
What is a Show?
Show and tell.
They only let adults play now =[
A hybrid of beef and mutton
It's a delicacy in... somewhere.
Cats and Les Mis
all other musicals I beleave.
...
I've sometimes managed to get into over 18 gigs, admittedly when i've been with people who are older anyway.
It's annoying, but I can kind of understand why people would want to keep under 18's out, especially with us having an unfortunate reputation for being skins cloned, neon-clad morons, pissed up on half a bottle of wkd thinking we're well indie. But really, i'd imagine the concentration of these idiots would be pretty low at say, a Holy Fuck gig anyway. They're not exactly Hadouken.
Maybe just turn up and try to get in for tonight? might as well if you've already paid.
to be honest
i have been going to 18+ shows for two years and I am 16... buy in advance, get a good ID, turn up drunk or just blag your way in by getting to know some promoters. (guestlists are the way forward)
venues in London are really really lenient on the whole, so just go for it - if you don't get in there is always something else to do.
youth of today, don't know you're born etc
When i was young all these sort of gigs were 18+, pubs ans clubs, it's all down to stupid licensing laws.
When they lower the age for drinking, you'll be fine!
I started going
to gigs regularly when I was 14 and never got asked for ID. It was a different story when I tried to order beer though.
im pretty sure
quite alot of gigs ive been at have been 18+ but most of the time i dont realise untill after the gig.
so no basically i dont find it annoying that much.
Bouncers never seemed to care
before I was about 17, then I used to tippex my ID to get in. They're really strict now, cottoned on pretty quick.
18+ gigs are so much better though, less idiots.
Never had any bad experiences though. Being a girl, it's pretty easy to blag yourself in anywhere.
i sympathise greatly
you young uns are loads cooler now adays with ya going to gigs
when I was 17 and under I didn't even think of going to gigs. I lived in the middle of know where though. So we just use to go play pool in the pubs and drink instead.
ICA
Graeme from Youthmovies managed to sneak two of us in the back door at the ICA show when were IDed and rejected.
I used to HATE them.......
then I got to 18 and I decided I LOVED them.
The same will happen to you, just be glad you're not in the US where 21+ shows are not uncommon!
well no
But this one time I saw Forward russia at a non 18+ show and a fuck load of 15 year old were acting like idiots and ruined the concert me and the band.
Although I understand not all kids are dumb and annoying.
Yup, I can't get into most shows, ever.
I hate it. And bouncers are cunts, which makes it worse.
Oh yeah, and it's ten times easier for girls
so shut up, girls.
thats london for you
sadly
im 19 now
but until i was 18 i hated not knowing if i would be able to get in. my friends would always get id'd and there were times when some got in and some didnt which was shit.
then i turned 18..and by the end of the year so did my friends and its been great ever since. main difference is over 18 gigs = less dancing, more standing around.
i always get in
cos of my band connections
