Coldplay want to be cool

We dinnae mean it literally, Chris. Coldplay’s frontman has told the BBC that he wants his band’s new record to make them hip in the playground.

Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends won’t be released until the 12th of June, by which point many kids will already be off killing crabs on their summer holidays, but lead single ‘Violet Hill’ was made available for free download this week (review).

That it was apparently downloaded by over 600,000 people within a day of its release just after noon on Tuesday will be of encouragement to Chris Martin, whose band “felt incredibly hungry to prove why people have heard of us” with the new album.

"I wanted it to be OK to be that 16-year-old who says they like Coldplay in the playground,” the singer told the BBC, who has fathered two childer; Apple Blythe Alison Martin and Moses Bruce Anthony Martin, aged three and two respectively.

"Hopefully with this record they won't get teased so much."

We think he’s referring to the arbitrary 16-year-old again.

In other news, Coldplay announced that they would be playing a free concert in Barcelona, as well as London and New York, around the time of the new album’s release in June.

awww

isn't that cute

Apple and Moses

Honestly, without that I would just be indiferent to him, but those names will always remind me what a terrible cunt he is.

their just names

of children...

naming kids unusually

does not a cunt make. That said, you are saying his a terrible cunt. Terrible at being a cunt. A good guy?

Oh give it up

isn't Steve Wright in the Afternoon cool enough for you?

What 16 year olds

hang out in playgrounds?

me

when i was 16

total

speedos.

erm...

i wonder how many oxfam finger clicks it took for you to think this was newsworthy? instead of writing this you could have been working on your month in records feature, which i've had a go at replicating, obviously without the w i t . . . .

HA

Crab death

killing crabs

reminds me of arturo bandini!

...

Fucking Coldplay eh? I wonder what 'massive stylistic departure' they're undergoing on this album? Well I'll tell ya - fuck all's what.

Why is he so bothered?

He's sold millions of albums, he's massively popular amongst the general public, why does he care what us indie snobs think anyway?

kids in school

are so gonna be like "yo you heard dat new coldplay song its da shit man, chris martin fo real word"

yeah, good luck with that

i'm sure his Cascada collabo will improve their standing amongst verr kidz, as long as it's PUMPING enough

Nasty Ginger Gene

If I see any kids with that malicious little gene attempting to kill a crab, I'll put an axe in there face.

As for Coldplay...they're alright.

Coldplay *is* cool

The more indie hipsters hate--> the more I love. Rush of Blood is completely and totally brilliant, that is all.

from above

i heard theres a happy hardcore remix album in the pipeline
now that would be a departure

Can we have a one way departure please

i liked coldplay when i was 16

however i wasn't cool.

ruddy ruby

I feel your pain.
I spent my sweet sixteen's jaffing off to pictures of Ruby from Eastenders in the TV Guide.

Easy guys,

I think Chris is just a bit concerned for the welfare of little Apple and Moses when they're all growed up, and the bad kids at school are like "Isn't that jeb-end from Coldplay your Dad? I'm not only about to assault you and take your money, but I'm also going to piss on your face."

...

Personally, I would hack them with a compass.
