i'd say that is pretty much the exact amount you need to buy a good guitar. it depends what type of music you intend to play on it? thats what the bloke in the shop said when i was looking for 1. i play quiet/loud kinda stuff so he recommended a fender telecaster or a graham smith. i ended up getting a graham smith off gumtree for 300 which was 540 in the shop!

um

i guess i'll be playing stuff kinda like bloc party-esque or a bit like the cribs or ,i dunno other stuff, its hard to say really.

you could get

a new mexican telecaster with that - or put it towards something better thats secondhand. Alternatively get a schecter, because they are quite cheap and sound fantastic

I was going to say Schecter

My friend's just bought his third one, all of which were around £350 from the States, and he loves them. They look nice too. Although they're not particularly 'indie' looking, i.e. not a Telecaster.

Seconded.

Because I have that guitar and it is great.
xxxxxxx

FENDER MUSTANG

I have a yellow one. The pickup switches are in a bit of an annoying place but this is my only gripe.

Might need an extra £150.

go seconds hand

go for a tele or a jaguarrr or a jazzmaster

Tokai

SG

^ Tokai are brilliunt for the price

they do really good Gibson copies, expecially the firebird http://tinyurl.com/5ermgs

Yep

Try and get a second hand japanese one - best guitar I have ever played

Thirded.

A Tokai or a Burns should see you right.

I was looking at guitars recently...

although I know nothing about them and it's easy to be skeptical about £100 guitars - the whole squier affinity series costs about that and gets pretty great reviews online. I'd check it out.

You can't go wrong

with a Mexican Telecaster...

Very Bloc Party.

ebay

a gibson les paul studio, dont listen to any of these whiny indie tele and jag kids ;P

not 100% sure you can buy a gibson les paul for that kinda money even on ebay

but I am sure you could get a fairly decent Ephiphone imprint SG newish which has fairly decent sound for that kind of cash you're talking about.

i'll check ebay

before i make sweeping statments like that next time!

I got mine off ebay in

genuine gibson hardcase for £350. just keep searching for local pickup ones and forget about cosmetic issues. Just ask if the neck is straight and there is no noise on the pots, switches or jack.

If there is when you pick it up dont pay him.etc, etc.

I wouldnt go for Epiphone SG's

Save a bit more cash and go for a second hand Gibsons SG standard. I got one recently and the different from a Telecaster Deluxe to that was immense. Really punchy, especially through a good amp!

got myself a gibson SG

now and the sound is immense!

Second hand

is definitely the way to go. A guitar really has to be in pretty bad condition before the sound or ability to play it are adversely affected beyond a bit of tlc, and for that money you'll have alot of really good options.

As for what guitar, that's a decision only you can make. I suppose the first question has to be what pick up configuration you want ie what kind of sounds you want to get out of it.

you could buy 2 danelectros and still have change

get the danelectro pro and the danelectro 63, no idea what they sound like but they look amazing. Or search ebay for a 2nd hand jazzmaster if you want the best guitar ever.

Danos are nice...

but if you want to hammer it a bit, they have a problem staying in tune. They can also bit a bit jangly, which is great if you want that sound, but obv not so great if you don't.

new Mexican Fender tele

built to last and play extremely well

Am I the only one

who read the title as 'i have to spend £350 on a guitar'.

Fucking upper middle class, always complaining.

i spent that much on my

washburn idol wi65

i consider it to be a very good guitar

my mex strat cost

a bit under that. i realy love it though.

can't remember exactly how much he spent on it

but the guitarist in Saturdays&Sundays bought an Epiphone SHeraton for about that much. Second hand possibly.

Looks really nice and sounds fantastic.

Get on ebay, look for something old

I would reccommend a new fender, but for that price you won't get anything good "these days". I got a mexican telecaster in about 2003 and it's really good but feels a bit.... not right. Bit clunky and all that, doesent sound as nice as I thought it would. Could be because i'm playing through a marshall but whatever.

I bought an Ibanez

Roadstar 2 in 1991 for £140. Still got it. Still gig with it. Best bargain ever. Late 80's ibanez kick ass.

DO NOT BUY

A MEXICAN FENDER. Youd be wasting good monies. If youre thinking fender in that price range you should probably look into a high end japanese model second hand.

otherwise the big epiphones around that price are all AWESOME (sheraton II, 355 or whatever it is) and the only thing they need to be just as good as a gibson is a decent set-up out the box.

Close but no cigar...

Epiphone's are OK but you can get much better guitars second hand for the same price. And, they will NEVER be as good as a Gibson, TRSTN. They're light and the wood is a bit shitty, as is paintjob.

But if you can find an 80's Tokai Strat, buy it.

oh hush

got a fender cyclone HH that was a mexican make and it's wonderful, this is in comparison with a tele and a jazzmaster...

dont buy

new stuff!
buy something old on ebay. like a melody maker or a marouder or a jazzmaster from early 90's...

you can buy my

salmon pink danelectro for £75 if you want...or nearest offer. i'll throw in a chorus pedal. that will get you a jangly sound....hmm...heck i'll throw in my effects thingy too....all for £100....that gives you £250 to buy a different sounding/looking guitar....maybe one with a bit more crunch and fizz...

GO TO THE SHOP

& try out loads of guitars, then buy the one you liked the most secondhand & spend the change on an amp.

also

www.harmony-central.com has lots of user reviews on practically every guitar ever made so you can get an honest opinion on the pros & cons etc.

I've pimped these out before

but I can't stress how awesome they are.

Fender Lead II:
Made in USA, (Fullerton factory, not Corona)
High output X-1 pick-ups (used in the Dan Smith Strat)
Hardtail through an Alder body (amazing intonation and sustain)

Loads more about them here:

Japanese Fender

or a late 80's non widdly Ibanez Roadstar, I just bought one and there incredibly well made, there unfashionable, but they do the business
