You might want to hold off on the live stuff till you get familiar with the songs.
A new einsturzende has slowly emerged over the last 15 years after the release of Tabula Rasa and the departure of 2 founding members, but it is all good-definitly.
Silence Is Sexy is not a wrong choice (one ot their best) but it is of the second phase of the band. Might be more fun to start with Kollaps or Patient O.T. or Halber- There is the first Strategies against Archetecture which is a collection of songs from early stuff but I think it's out of print.
The new one is great- it's got the first use of acoustic guitar by the band.
silence is sexy
for sure
^ Bad choice
if you're listening to the early, noisy stuff. Get Halber Mensch.
Also, at the risk of sounding obvious
Strategies Against Architechture I
:D
^^ this
Halber Mensch
silence is sexy is
their best in my opinion, but like tohereknowswhen says, not the right choice if you're listening to the early stuff. I AM OF NO HELP.
Kollaps
great call
It's all awsome.

Patient OT
Just primal craziness.
Then get the relaxed stuff.
The way I see it, if you can't handle Neubauten's noisy stuff, you shouldn't be allowed to listen to the mellow stuff.
MY RULES!
What a wonderful band.
