You have one of two choices...
You deal with your actions and be honest with your girlfriend. Consequence will be she either dumps you and hates you or hates you and tries to work it out until she loves you again. Or you don't tell her and hope to some unknown entity that she never finds out or that the guilt doesn't eat away at you.
There is always a reason why you did it. Instead of calling yourself stupid names find out what the reason is. fix it so you don't repeat the same mistake and stop looking for pity amongst strangers.

If we're going to bring in personal experience... when I was 19 I had a boyfriend who I know cheated on me. I think in the back of my mind I knew anyway, but actually being told completely wrecked my confidence - I haven't had a lengthy relationship since and that was 3 years ago.
Whatever I knew, it could never genuinely be 'in my hands', because I loved him anyway, and so had to carry on, except now I knew he didn't love me.

if he hadn't told you, but you kind of knew, and in your own words he didn't love you anymore, then surely it was going downhill anyway. at least when you were told, you had an actual explanation or reason as to why it was.

that explanation was that there was something wrong with me, that made him have to cheat on me, to get something that I couldn't give him. I only forgave myself over a year later when I met up with him again and... something I don't want to talk about on DiS happened... and then I semi had a mental breakdown but at least I knew for certain he was a cunt, which was quite some result.
I think the disinction as to whether telling is a good idea or not is probably in the girls reaction. If she has the rational response and hates him, it was the right thing to do. If she hates herself, it's not fair on her.

if the cheating was indicative
of it 'not working out' rather than just some boys liking to cheat and it being no judgement on how much they like their partner - as was the case then - I generally understand that, so the break-up isn't horrific.

if someone just "likes to cheat" then they shouldn't be in a relationship to begin with! as you obviously know, this is a horrible thing to do to someone and there's no excuse for it even if there are a thousand explanations. it never "just happens", it's a choice the person makes, and they have to deal with the consequences of it. it is horrible for the other person who loses all control of the situation, of course, but if it gets that far then it shouldn't be allowed to go any further.
