Pretty underrated? There was a thread on The Make Up a while back, but no-one ever mentions these guys. I think they're one of my favourite Dischord bands (aside from the obvious triplet of Minor Threat, Fugazi and Q And Not U). Pretty sad they don't get any recognition.

They pretty much wrote the rulebook for Refused, but sound so much more raw and wild. And I love the singers garagey howl. It's like a hardcore band playing swing or soul or something like that.

You're My Miss Washington, D.C. is a great tune, as is Spectra Sonic Sound. Not such a fan of the second album, but I only got it a a few weeks ago, maybe it's a grower.

n-sub ulysses

the first track on their 2nd album is the best thing they ever did. also check out the "sound of young america" single - claaaaaassssss.

boo!

definitely underrated. i agree with you that it's a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve. although, i've only heard about half the songs on '13 point program to destroy america' and half the songs on 'plays pretty for baby'.

i love 'you're my miss washington, d.c.'. and 'the kingdom of heaven must be taken by storm'. it's killer. "LOLITA! LOLITA! LOLITA! LOLITA!"

i think they sound more like a jazz band who went nuts and turned their hand to hardcore punk. and not just because of their song 'the sound of jazz to come'. they just sound all over the place, kind of riffing to the same kind of melody and tune, but ultimately just doing their own thing.

also, ian svenonius: best dressed and most articulate man in punk rock?

I know I mention this at least once a year

but I saw Nation Of Ulysses live here in Glasgow around 1991 and they were outrageously good :)

:O

:(

literally the best bathroom ive ever seen

do the posters not get wet though?

only the ones

closest to the bath/shower :)

yeah theyre good!

i havent heard loads of them though, been meaning to make more of an effort with them actually.

Thanks For This Reminder

I havent listened to this band for years. I have Plays Pretty For Baby on vinyl tucked away somewhere, im going to hunt it down this evening

funnily

enough James Canty from NOU was playing in London on Sunday with Ted Leo. Great show!

This band was amazing.

Remember someone started that thread recently about 'THE three hardcore bands' and included Refused? Fuck that shit. They ripped their whole schtick off of Nation of Ulysses.

^

pretty much.

That's pretty much what I said

This band were the best thing on Discord, well, them and French Toast.

Seconded

I prefer these guys to At The Drive-In anyhow, who took much from NOU.

Can't quite decide whether '13 point program..' or 'plays pretty..' is the better album though..
